    the newer fast wireless chargers actualy nigoteate back and forth to ramp up the voltage on the pad until the phone is chargeing at a fast rate. idk if there are modual hacker friendly versions yet. i also wonder if you can use a small steel coin in the center to act like a transformer core and improve efficany/ range and power delivery

  • @liney118
    @liney118 Před 4 lety

    the black thing is ferrite , it's used to focus the magnetic field, also used on chokes and small transformers.

    0:56 Looks like the coil uses Litz wire which is a type of cable used in electronics to carry alternating current. To reduce the skin effect and proximity effect losses in conductors used at frequencies up to about 1 MHz.

    Aren't 90 minutes and 1.5 hours the same amount of time for the torch?

    • @turb0t
      @turb0t Před 4 lety

      Hmmm, 1 hour =60min, 0.5hour=30min, 60min+30min=90min. Yes it seems 90min and 1.5hours are the same duration.

    I have a qi (pronounced "Chee") charger for my nexus 7 2013, and i think it has the same controller chips as yours

  • @DJSolitone
    @DJSolitone Před 9 lety

    Hi Julian, the disc at the back of the coil is actually made of ferro-magnetic material, probably in order to increase the overall induction value of the charging loop. I bought a very similar board last month to adapt on my windscreen mount for my Galaxy S5. These chargers are indeed highly finicky about positioning. Also I've noticed that some parts on the PCB do tend to heat up quite a lot, to the point of rendering them untouchable. Apart from that these are nice devices, according that you are fine with the slower charging times they provide, at least on a "large" battery such as mine (2800 mAh). Thanks for your nice channel. I am very impatiently waiting for the magical debouncing recipe for the rotary encoder...

    • @JulianIlett
      @JulianIlett  Před 9 lety

      DJSolitone I think I was being distracted by the green LED which I now realise goes out after a couple of seconds.
      I'm getting back into the rotary encoder project - will shoot the next part soon.

  • @Rashombo
    @Rashombo Před 9 lety

    Just take the charger receiver apart, the coil will fit your wearable and have the power electonics behind the coil. And could it not be that the voltage is inverted when the coil is the wrong way around?

  • @Mandrag0ras

    Hi Julian. I'm very excited to see an LED flashlight in your postbag series. Anxiously waiting for that review. I noticed your older flashlight since the first time I started watching your videos months ago. I'm very curious, what battery, LED, reflector and lens does it have? Can you upload a picture of it and show us? Also what's the amp draw of the new flashlight measured at the tail cap?

    • @JulianIlett
      @JulianIlett  Před 9 lety +1

      runner180fxr The torch with my name printed on it is the LED Lenser M5 - single AA cell - NiMH or Alkaline - not sure about the LED, reflector or lens. I'll see if I can measure the cells current on the TN12 when I do my review.

    Should I buy a TN12? I have an LED Lenser P7, which is great with a fresh set of AAA batteries but it's not long before the brightness starts to fade as the batteries run down. I'd really like a more constant light output.

    Might be interesting to measure the efficiency of the wireless setup. Given input and output are regulated to 5v, it is probably enough to measure current in and out simultaneously.

    • @JulianIlett

      ***** I've asked the manufacturer for the correct run times.

  •  Před 9 lety

    I exadently broke one of my qi chargers when i tried to mount it to bottom side of nightstand... I think that black thing is some sort of ferrite core, not just plastic.

    • @JulianIlett
      @JulianIlett  Před 9 lety

      Uroš Golob Yes, it's too heavy to be plastic. So it's quite brittle then? A ferrite disc does make sense.

    •  Před 9 lety

      Julian Ilett Yes it is brittle, it did bend a tinny bit but then burst into pieces... and I could not get it to work without. Qi chargers are strangely sensitive where you put it, no wonders original nexus qi charger use 4 small magnets to lock it into place.

  • @merlin2600
    @merlin2600 Před 9 lety

    The Nexus 4 is annoyingly sensitive on Qi charger position. I had to center it perfectly and remove the case for it to work. With the same charger, the Nexus 5 is working perfectly with the case on. Same for the Nexus 7 2013 (2012 doesn't have Qi).

    • @JulianIlett
      @JulianIlett  Před 9 lety

      Eric Darchis Does the Nexus5 focus any quicker than the Nexus4? That's my biggest problem.

    • @merlin2600
      @merlin2600 Před 9 lety

      Julian Ilett It is only a bit better. When it loses focus in video mode, it usually takes a moment before it decides to refocus.

      @cuddles6938 Před 9 lety

      Some chargers from China say that the phone case can not be more then 5mm for it to charge the phone. Some are not made very well and people have had issues with overheating on some such as the Luaga models. Probably why they lower the price from $44 down to $12 USD.

    • @MiggyManMike
      @MiggyManMike Před 8 lety

      +Eric Darchis The palm pre, which had wireless charging a looooong time ago had a series of small magnets in the phone and base which located the phone in place, made for a nifty docking station too.

    • @cuddles6938
      @cuddles6938 Před 8 lety

      MiggyManMike Yeah they never bothered advertising power mat charging much. You could even buy cases for certain phones to charge them wirelessly. People today think only Apple would have made such a thing but sadly Apple doesn't even bother to put that in phones or else the phone would have to be made thicker again. Sniff Sniff, poor Apple.

    • @JulianIlett
      @JulianIlett  Před 9 lety +1

      runner180fxr The manual says don't leave it on max for long time (no more than 10 minutes), so I'm guessing it doesn't automatically timeout.

    • @Gigawipf
      @Gigawipf Před 9 lety +1

      it does not switch down after some time but i am sure it is protected against overheating. but trust me: you won't have it longer than 10 minutes on. outside it is okay but without airflow it gets a bit hot.

    Some Chinese chargers have larger coils so you do not have to be so finicky with placement of phone, especially with tablets. Just read the reviews as some have had issues with overheating and the chargers not realizing the phone is already charged, turning on and off again charging the phone more.

    I have found that not all Qi chargers are created equal. Some time ago I bought one for $24.00 AUD and it works brilliantly every time. Recently I decided to chance a couple at $7.00 AUD each. They are junk, even out of the case it it difficult to get them to charge the phone.

  • @CarmenBonkalot
    @CarmenBonkalot Před 8 lety

    Hey Julian, love the videos. I also have one of these QI chargers, I brought it as a consumer device in a case, not as a naked circuit. One day it stopped working, and it had two melted points. When I opened it I noticed that surface components Q4 and Q9 overhead and exploded to the point of melting the case. Just a word of warning as these particular circuits are pretty cheap

These are the chepest ones i found. ;)
