  • I'm currently doing the FAWM challenge (February Album Writing Month), to come up with 14 tracks in one month. Some of these I'm recording/doing live during Twitch streams (maybe I'll do one or two on YT later). This is one highlight where I came up with my FAWM#2 track. from scratch to arrangement, in just under an hour and a half. Some of these FAWM tracks can take me anywhere from 30 mins to a few hours. I'll try and share the better ones that I record.
I've done FAWM many times in the past, since maybe more than a decade, though I skipped some of the last years. For me this challenge is very important and has been crucial to me in being able to work very quickly and focused, and find very efficient and fast workflows while mixing and arranging on the fly and attempting to retain a fairly decent quality in production. It's a tough challenge, which for me, has improved my composition, mixing and general music workflow abilities by a huge amount. I recommend it to anyone that wants to improve their skills. In my opinion, one of the best advantages to working (practicing) incredibly fast and trying not to worry too much about the finished product, is that you tend to stay firmly within the creative zone (assuming you're not getting distracted), and also avoid getting bored and/or fatigued by the track you're working on. But there's lots of other advantages too, with the only downside being some tracks may sound rushed/unfinished, but rushed/unfinished tracks are not only acceptable but somewhat encouraged, so that the focus is always on the creative/compositional aspect. There's always plenty of time later for tweaking, fine tuning, mixing and mastering etc

Beautiful, I listened to this song and wrote a love letter to my beloved, tears appeared in my eyes and I became convinced of what is most important in life. May the good energy never leave you, my friend. 🥰

I like these 'open-up process' vids... I always learn somthing cool, when I pay attention. Not sure if I'm ready to give up Reaper for BitWig yet, though. hehe Cheers!

I already find it difficult to finish one track a month!
How would you prevent all the tracks from sounding alike?
    How would you maintain quality?
Do you use some kind of standard track format?
How do you prevent from going hyper and not go on until the wee hours and then ruin your health?
Does 'one track a day' include track concepts with basically several semi-random loops and basic fade in fade outs?
How many hours a day would you spend on each track/groove on average?

      1) It can easily happen that a lot of tracks sound too similar, I have to make a conscious effort to try and change/vary things from track to track, or for instance like today I decided to do a DnB track rather than ambient 2) Quality during FAWM isn't necessary, but I try and keep the quality to a good standard if I can. Enough FAWM practice over the years really helps with this, because you become so much faster at creating the tracks, as you get better/faster you have more time for quality 3) I use a track template, but it's very bare bones and just has some mastering FX to save me some time. So no, no real standard track format, I just start each from scratch 4) I usually work into the morning hours anyway. My best/creative period is between 3-6am or so, though I try and leave the studio before 5am. Health is fine, I sleep just as much as anyone else 5) The FAWM challenge is only really 1 track ever 2 days or so, but I'm actually doing 2-3 tracks a day sometimes at the moment. I do full arrangements, including fades and mixing/mastering 6) I'm only spending about 1-3 hours on each track and I'm trying to speed this up even more. In a day, I think at most, I'm spending up to 6-7 hours for 2-3 tracks.

But I'm happy with my Strymon BigSky. My opinion, there is nothing that will beat the BigSky ✌

Great video. I noticed you have an extensive list of gear used below the video. Everything, it seems, but the name of the DAW you were using, which is what I was trying to work out. I dunno...maybe BitWig? No idea.
