  • In this video I winch the logs sideways up our property and then up to the house. I had to use multiple snatch blocks to redirect the line and the logs. I was using a PCW5000 portable winch and my homemade support to mount it to a tree. Things went very well and with little effort. If you enjoyed this video please like, comment and subscribe!

Really enjoyed your videos on the winch. I've been considering buying one for a few years now and it's great to see videos of one working from someone other than the company that sells them. The wife and I got a big laugh out of your sons comments in the first video. :- )

That worked great. I'm thinking of getting a winch and wondering if you think it is worth the time and effort pulling the logs up the hill and if you'd do it again. I guess a bad day in the woods is better than a good day sitting at home or in the office.

I would totally recommend it. It is a lot of effort but in our case the dead logs are at the bottom of the hill and free. Good exercise and lots of fun.

Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Like many others I’m trying to figure out exactly how hard this winch will pull before I go spend some serious coin to get one. I’m just wondering if it will really pull a ton on a single line- or given all the frictional possibilities do you need to use a block if you want to pull something heavy? I’m on the east coast and working mostly with oak, 1500-2500lbs, etc. I’m hoping to be able to work with 1 or 2 parts of line and bust through stuff- without having to reeve up more parts of line. It looks like you were working it hard on those slopes. We are all side hills here too- so it looks like we have to make our own mounts if it’s to be used in the woods, lol. I’d like to see a video of all your thoughts on this thing since it’s a lot of money and so would everybody else- it looks like a great product but the main source we have is the guy who owns the company, and he’s not pulling any 24” oak logs in his factory videos, lol. Thanks!

I think you can easily pull 1500-2500lbs up hill in two part. If you make a winch mount like I did in my other video it makes it much easier to operate on the slopes. If you can find a route and switchback up the hill it also makes it much more achievable to do. If you have a helper it would go quite quickly and you could cut the logs shorter if you are cutting them into fire wood anyway. I find it is easier to bring a bunch up the hill into one spot and then redirect by myself whereas if you had a helper you could set snatch blocks the whole way and they could follow the logs up and unhook the blocks as you go. I don't regret this purchase. Just wish I had more time to use it! Thanks for watching!!

Very interesting setup and equipment. I'm in the research to do the same kind of retrieving work with some logs :)
Is that really expensive the PCW5000? Do you know of any other brand or similar machine to do this task?
    Thank you :)

Hi, thanks for watching. Sorry for the slow response. It is a decent investment at first but the amount of firewood you can retrieve will pay for itself in a few years. When I was fist looking into winches I was considering a chainsaw mounted winch but I did not want to put that kind of load on my saw. I also wanted to have my saw available during winching in case I needed it.

Where do you get the yellow plastic cover for the front of the log?

Hi, thanks for watching. Sorry for the slow response. I purchased the skidding cone with my winch from the portable winch company.
