“Jim, let me tell you somethin’: there’s gonna be a whole bunch of things we don’t tell Mrs. Clinton.” And they made that joke in *1992* !
I guess that the writing was on the wall even back then, at least to a certain degree, huh?

Hilary got him for that joke.
People don't realize how difficult it is to do what Phil Hartman was doing. Constantly shoving food in his mouth, eating while at the same time reading his lines & staying in character while not gagging on the food as he was barely drinking any water (or whatever) to help wash it down.
There will never be another one like Phil Hartman.
Seeing him scarf down all that food while doing his lines was like some 1930's three stooges, Laurel and Hardy type comedy.
And that food must have been cold too, so probably not at all pleasant to eat.
Oh, it couldn't have been all that difficult. Bill did it without any problems. So Phil was just getting into Bill's character.
I wonder how many takes it took. Phil said by the end he could hardly talk from being so stuffed
it's Saturday Night LIVE. That means one "take"!@@sickjuicysjamshack3580
Some people are literally irreplaceable and PHIL HARTMAN was that man.
I was stunned when he was murdered. Such a rare talent.
@D 1 Absolutely correct. I believe he was THE BEST cast member that show ever had. What a loss.
Agreed! And Chris Farley is another
He was the utility comedian. The guy could be put anywhere and just nail it every time!

I love how when Phil breaks down, Rob just hands him a drink and the sketch keeps rolling. Some real pros during this era of the show.
Phil was brilliant !!

Ellen Cleghorne and Julia Sweeney.
WOW is right! Thankfully, Chris Rock is still rocking'. RIP Phil.
Tim Meadows as well
Agree, a cast of all stars. Chris Farley and Phil Hartman were my favorites. I don’t remember Chris Rock being in this skit though.
Notice that, not once did anyone look at a cue card. People don't seem to remember that there were whole seasons when this was the case. It puts the show on a whole different level, and it's a big part of why the sketch holds up so well.
And the camera work and staging, gosh they must have had a bigger budget than most other seasons of the show. This sketch was seriously rehearsed.
"Jim, let me tell you something: There's going to be a WHOLE bunch of things we don't tell Mrs. Clinton." (0:34) One of the best lines from an SNL political skit!
Roger Plummer Maybe the best ever.

Literally one of the best skits in SNL history.
It is basically the quintessential history of the Clinton presidency
You don’t need to use the term “literally.” It’s implied

Rest In Peace Funny Man.
He was hilarious. The whole cast in that era was so talented and funny!
It is absolutely BONKERS how professional everyone was in this sketch. I feel like the modern SNL cast would have broken character and fell down laughing at least 3-4 times, especially when Hartman can't talk from his mouth being so full of food in the 'warlords' segment. Pure brilliance.
Without at least 1 person breaking character it kinda makes the skits not all that funny. To me the funniest oart of SNL is when they cant contain laughter

All-time classic sketch. I like how Phil Hartman was about to break but he hid it by pretending to be choking. Rob Schneider calmly hands him a Coke without even grinning. Professionals.
Yep, must agree. He even hands him a napkin afterwards while still in character.

It's like Simpsons predicting the Trump presidency in a flash forward episode from the year 2000. Trump had announced a presidential run in 1999 so his ambitions were well known.
Likewise Bill Clinton this episode of SNL is from December 1992, and was already accused of a 12-year extramarital relationship by Gennifer Flowers during the presidential campaign that same year. Far before the Lewinsky scandal and impeachment 6 years later.
He managed to capture the charm even Clinton's opponents admitted he had. Plus, the policy wonk side too. Remarkable
All while stuffing his face and carrying on a conversation. Clinton would've approved of this message.
I remember how refreshing it was to hear him. People could ask him about the most random geographical event and he knew all about it and could explain his position on it. He was absolutely a huge policy wonk.
