Bob Odenkirk wrote this! He originally wrote it for himself, but realized Chris would take it to another level. Mark of greatness.
Yea if I’m not mistaken wasn’t it in second city Chicago
@@Daniel-ep5bq Exactly. Second City had one of the original stage performances posted here for a little bit, But made it private. I copied it several different places before that happened though 😁
That's amazing and epic in a way that only odenkirk and Farley could make it
Was shocked to learn Bob odenkirk was on SNL as a writer, Don't remember him ever being in a sketch though.
He wasn't a sketch player on SNL, but he was the dad in it at Second City where they first showcased it.
“I want to live in a van down by the river”
A joke in 1993, an actual goal in 2019.
The truth is too painful....
there's an entire CZcams genre of how to live in your van
Scary, isn't it?
@@binkymagnus i tried it for 4 months and I fucking miss it.
How many degrees of separation between living by the river and say, Mar A Largo?
Phil's ability to remain stone faced serious in ridiculous scenarios is just one of many reasons I love and miss him.

My favorite part of this skit is watching David Spade and Christina Applegate desperately try to keep it together.
When the Ad-Libbing begins, they're Toast..I think that Table collapse was unknown to all. Spade looked totally shocked..
Tim Conway busting up Harvey Korman was GOLD.
They would tape twice, one for TV, and a backup..Conway would make little changes from one to the other..keeping the Cast Mates off guard..😜
Yeah, watching this live Chris looked so damn manic & outrageous. You could just tell by those 2 keeping their hands over their heads they were struggling to keep a straight face. I don't blame them a bit. It just made me laugh even harder than I was already laughing.
yeah i love how christina is trying to hide her face with her hair as she was about to crack up
This is one those things that people say to emphasize something, but is totally over the top...lets face it, the favorite part of this skit is Chris Farley. Without Chris Farley, this skit...would be nothing. Just nothing. :) (I did find it hillarious that they tried to keep it together, but lets not kid ourselves)
@Peter Kocic I completely disagree. David Spade trying not to laugh is considerably more funny than the actual Cris Farley delivery.
Fun fact, Chris Farley intentionally did not tell the other actors that the table was breakable. So those were their true reactions
I always thought that the table breaking was improvised. Like he legitimately tripped, and he just happened to have the presence of mind to go "whoopsie daisies, we're going to have to clean that up later together!" to make it look like it was still in character.
That's not true
Yes, him and the stage hands were the only ones that knew! It made the bit that much better when Spade was seriously concerned when he broke the table!
RIP CF!
Yes, you can see Christina mouthing, "Oh my God!"
Really bc Dave is the only one who really seems concerned
Is anybody watching this in 2024? This still makes me laugh 40 years later!! 😂❤
I Quote it every day
Just watched it again.Almost broke a rib laughing!
I had to look it up for a laugh because I am currently living in a honda civic down by the river dreaming of buying a van to live in down by the river.
30 years later, you mean. 40 years later, you will be 8 years deceased.
30 years. I thought I was older than I remembered there for a while 😅
Whenever I rewatch this sketch, I'm reminded that the people in the audience are hearing lines like "...in a van down by the river" for the first time, not knowing that the scene will become iconic. I can't even imagine the standing ovation Chris would get if he were here to reprise this character today. RIP Mr. Farley.
💚
I saw this live (on TV, not in the studio) and I just remember at one point hearing static ... it wasn't a technical problem, I was laughing that hard. How Christina Applegate held on to deadpan her line is a mystery.

Comedy GOLD🤣
❤❤ R.I.P. Chris Farley
Many of the skits from those comedic genius during the days of Chris Farley, Adam Sandler, David Spade, Jim Carry, Will Farell, etc. became the gold standard of iconic comedy. “Van by the River” “Jacuzzi Life Guard” “More Cow Bell” “Night Clubs” (precursor to Night At The Roxberry) all hilarious.
Fun Fact: Bob Odenkirk (Saul Goodman/Jimmy McGill from Breaking Bad & Btter Call Saul) wrote this sketch. He even said that this was the pinnacle of his entire career
That is indeed a very fun fact
You also notice how he has a very similar fashion style to Saul Goodman. Interesting.
Bob is such a comedy genius, so many people don't know he wrote for SNL
Mr. Show with Bob and David is still one of the best things Odenkirk has ever done. Imagine if they could have got Farley on that show!
Someone must have listened to bob odenkirk on the Howard stern show
I love how, because Spade and Farley were friends, Farley would focus his rants on Spade more than anyone else just to have him break character, it's hysterical
Oh yeah he was targeting Spade most of the time. Just trying to give him hell lol
And that my friend is a defining characteristic of true comedy
Chris did that to Adam Sandler too lol
Just like how Tim Conway would always try to break Harvey Korman in The Carol Burnett Show. He'd succeed almost every single time.
Even going so far as to pick him up, yeah...
This is one of those sketches where no matter what, you’re going to laugh like it’s the first time because Chris just nail is perfectly. Every delivery, the movements, the way he’s fixing his waistband? It’s just genius.
Pure comedy gold. And you notice the whole cast aren't reading cue cards like you see most of the latest skits on SNL nowadays. They did a little thing like REHEARSAL and became familiar with it.
That's what makes a good skit really special.
@@spotter121877 They're actually supposed to read from the cue cards, it's just that not everybody is good at not making it obvious. What's on them can change at any point up to the last minute. This is how John Mulaney, when he was a writer, famously kept getting Bill Hader to break when he played Stefan-he'd add new, outrageous things to them just before the segment that Hader had never seen before, and he found it impossible not to react to what Mulaney came up with haha.

Rehearsal only starts on Thursdays, so they only have a few days to learn the lines, and they can change at any point before the sketch, basically. They've said that they've even had times where up until Weekend Update started, they were changing things. So the cue cards are essential to the show. :)
There's a cool video on the channel about the cue cards, actually!

Literally didn't chuckle once. I genuinely don't understand the humor.
Exactly! I've watched this after really bad days( at work, etc) and it never fails to cheer me up. I'm very tempted to call this perfection and I'm unsure if people would disagree with that statement. lol
@@tj12711Regardless of whether you laughed, the whole notion is hilarious beginning with the "intervention" concept within an otherwise moral family as well as the stereotypical motivational speaker who has no real world job and repeats cliches. On top of that, Chris's whole character was unprecedented. Anyone in the comedy business knows this was unprecedented gold and will always be a standard.
If anybody is from Chicagoland, Bob Odenkirk who wrote this sketch is from Naperville. The "river" the van is down by was inspired by the Naperville River walk.

I don't know what's funnier, watching Chris Farley or watching David Spade desperately trying to hold it together watching Chris Farley.
Fun Fact: The reason the kids "broke character" and were chucking so much, wasn't entirely because of Chris Foley's antics. No. To the left, Julia Sweeney had broken first, and was laughing hysterically. The cameraman even saw her start, and had panned her out of the shot entirely. If you look closely, you can catch glimpses of her going, and of David Spade watching HER break, not Chris Farley. It was a rare break she regrets to this day.
I absolutely love watching actors break! David Spade was cracking me up.
@@1vw4me yeah I was just reading about that. It brought me back to the sketch
The rest of the cast & guest hosts trying not to laugh makes these skits even funnier. Still miss Chris Farley. We could so use a little of his kindness & sense of humor right now !!

The wildest thing about this is that the sketch as-written isn't even *that* funny (imo), it is entirely elevated by Farley's insane performance.
Agreed! This wouldn’t be funny at all if it were anyone other than Farley!
I highly disagree, I think the script was written by a regular Bill shakespear
Agreed. Hartman was really good too.
Comedy is just as much about delivery as it is about material
That's something I've noticed about pretty much every SNL sketch: the writing tends to be "okay" at best, but it's the quality of the performers that make sketches like these absolute classics.
4:00 Christina Applegate's transition from just another human being enjoying Chris Farley to a "surly teenage daughter character" in about a quarter-second is absolutely amazing, what a pro. That smirk and eye roll are spot-on

Quick Story: When I was maybe 10 or 11, I went with my siblings and mom to McDonalds for lunch (in Toronto). We were sitting on the outside patio and a stretch limo pulls up. Who gets out but our man Chris Farley and a few body guards. Well everyone went absolutely mental and my friend's mom who was there asked him to do "Down by the River". As cringe-worthy as that seems now, Chris didn't hesitate and proceeded to perform the skit at a random ass McDonalds in Toronto. The entire place erupted in laughter and happy tears.

Well, he was El Nino, which is Spanish for "The Nino".
As that coffee table found out... 😂
i acutally knew him back around '89. He was a friend of a friend and he came over to play D&D one time.. This clips brings me flashbacks lol
@J P D&D is Dungeons and Dragons. A sit down "pen and paper" role playing game.
YES HE FUCKING WAS!!!!!!!!
'Government cheese' is a criminally underrated line.
Some good cheese back in the day!
Agreed
Used to get that cheese in the commissary on base when I was stationed in West Germany in the army.
I thought it was pretty good, actually.
...it was free 😊
@@jefffriedmann1482 shit I’m about to make a grilled cheese with some now
This was one for the books! Classic Farley! Genius comedian. ❤
drinking coffee in the basement for the last 4 hours ROFL
“Now he’s been down in the basement drinking coffee for about the last 4 hours...”
Thats a typical day for me.
@@Razorgeist do go on
AKA... A cover for the fact that he's tweeked out of his fucking mind on cocaine.
Something about basements and long stretches of time reminds me of Parasite and Pink Flamingos
Basement = green room backstage
Back in the day Living in a van down by the river sounded like punishment, NOW it sounds like a LIFE GOAL
4:02 umm well then how do you explain THIS???
Maybe that's one of the meanings of trickle down economics,if so a lot of us folks are trickling down to living "IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!"
ha! These days it's called living sustainably and economically...lol
I'm saving up so I can live on a boat right now lmao.
Yes, everyone's living in tiny houses made from old school buses.
"You'll have plenty of time livin' in a van down by the river when... YOU'RE LIVING IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!!!"🤣🤪
GREATEST SNL skit of all time!! Chris was the best physical comedian of the 20th century.
Excellent at it . John Ritter, Lucille Ball and Tim Conway were pretty amazing as well 💕
@@jeffreymiller9808 Don't forget Dick Van Dyke and Jackie Gleason.
Chris Farley was a comedic genius. While everyone is cracking up, he doesn’t break - he stays in character! What a loss!
He was an amazing guy! He was loved by all his co-workers. They said he was just as funny off camera and really cared a lot about everyone. He would always be trying to make strangers laugh when they'd all hang out, which they did often
@@lightbeforethetunnel he was loved by everyone not just his coworkers
@@ACOGLMT556 Yes, that's true. I would have said "only his co-workers" if that's what I meant. I just pointed out the co-worker thing because usually people have some co-workers they don't get along with as well as others but all of them seemed to like him. Chris Farley was a great guy and went to church every Sunday! He knew Jesus is the most high and we was right. Maybe this is why he was so likeable, he understood unconditional love like Jesus taught us
Up there with Jeff Buckley and the greatest of the greats
Trivia tidbit, he is acting like a guy his dad knew growing up.
Yeah, let's give a quick shout out to Christina Applegate.
Dated a girl that looked her as trashy Kelly Bundy
No shit. It's an actual miracle that she wasn't in a puddle of tears by the end of this sketch.
@@snidelywhiplash ya never heard of Hannibal Burress?
Best talk show ever
@@warrentransue3507 Eric Andre the best
I have watched this video like 3,000 times and it still makes me laugh.
Just never gets old.😂
Watchin' this reminds me that we are currently living in a very beautiful time to be alive. Because, even tho I don't have a TV set, I can still watch this skit whenever I want on my phone, while living... in a van down by the river.
Hahaha 😆 😂 good one!!!
Truth haha!
Got me. Totally didn't see that coming. Good job!
Better than living in a river down by a van
😂😂😂 It's a goal now to live in a van down by the river
This is probably the most iconic skit ever on SNL. Forever a classic.
There is only one thing that would have made this sketch better, and that is more cowbell
@@natesanderson7293 The last time I checked, they don't have a lot of songs that feature the cowbell. And he'd be doing himself and the entire band a disservice if he didn't play the hell out of it.

I want you to really explorRrRre the studio space
lol...well, not ever, but its a good one
Dan Akroyd's Bass-o-matic was pretty darn good too.
This man changed comedy forever. Legend
"Drinking "coffee" for the last four hours."
😂😂😂😂
the fact the two kids on the couch start laughing and are constantly trying to straighten their faces and failing makes it funnier
Three kids,three....close though.
Sir Sumumabitch Pretty sure there are only two
thezec yeah you never call David Spade a kid
"titans of comedy"................ now that's fucking comedy in itself buddy!
thezec lol yeah
The constant fixing his belt makes me laugh every time 😂😂
Same here
The way he's standing you'd think he's just finished riding a horse for 12 hours. It adds extra absurdity to the performance.
He didn't do it in rehearsal. Spade said it broke them all instantly. Plus nobody knew about the prop table either
Gallager
He had what Dr’s call “a little bit of a weight problem” to quote him 😂
Rip comedy legend ❤
Every time I play Baldur's Gate 3 and hear the theme this is all I can think of
it seems Farley was very focused on cracking David up. it seems he's normally difficult to break, but Farley succeeded he looks so pleased with himself when David starts laughing.David's reaction when Chris fell on the table, is priceless.
echo 13 For those who don’t know, Farley was the only actor on set who knew that he’d fall on that table. It was a complete surprise to the rest of the cast.
