Shio Chanko Nabe and Shio Butter Ramen Noodles Recipe (Sumo Wrestler Hot Pot) | Cooking with Dog

- Chanko Nabe is a hot pot dish, which Sumo wrestlers enjoy almost every day. We're also making delicious Shio Butter Ramen to finish off the broth. This dish is very rich in the savory umami taste, and you will not be able to stop eating it!
How to Make Shio Chankonabe and Shio Butter Ramen

- Broth -
600ml Water (2.54 cups)
1 tbsp Chicken Stock Powder, Chinese-style
3 tbsp Sake
1 tsp Salt
1/2 tbsp Sugar
1 Dried Red Chili Pepper
1 Garlic Clove, grated
- Chicken Meatballs -
200g Ground Chicken (7.1 oz)
1/4 tsp Salt
Pepper
1/2 tbsp Sake
20g Ginger Root, grated (0.7 oz)
60g Long Green Onion, chopped (2.1 oz)
1 tbsp Potato Starch
100g Extra-Thin Pork Slices, for shabu-shabu (3.5 oz)
1 Aburaage, thin deep-fried tofu
3-4 Cabbage Leaves
1 Long Green Onion
1 bundle of Garlic Chives
1-2 tbsp Toasted White Sesame Seeds, ground
Sesame Oil
- To finish off the rest of the broth -
1 package of Fresh Ramen Noodles, cooked for a little less time and coated with sesame oil
Spring Onion Leaves, chopped
Butter
Toasted Nori Seaweed
Pepper

It's kind of telling how something that is so much healthier than most average American dishes is used to fatten up japanese Sumo wrestlers...
The trick is to eat a LOT of it, with rice, and nap afterwards. Most of what sumo wrestlers consume is very healthy; aside from massive amounts of carbs, they get tons of nutrition and protein, and do a lot of exercise. It's not really healthy for them to be that size, but they're not precisely unhealthy either.

I've been watching a lot of Grand Sumo Highlights from Robert Mensing's CZcams channel, and I must say, as a westerner, I always thought Sumo was just two fat men slamming their bellies into each other. But as I watched, I saw such deep strategy, skill, and athleticism(even speed!). I was hooked. I spent 8 hours watching only Sumo. I saw every Basho of 2017, and now I am watching the current January 2018 Basho highlights. So you can imagine how *perfect* the timing of this Chankonabe recipe is for me... I can't wait to cook this Chanko once I get the ingredients from the Japanese grocery store. Thank you so much for posting this delicious looking recipe!

yeah, apparently the weight of sumo wrestlers is put on carefully. it's not just two fit fat dudes smacking their bellies together, there's a science to it. also, obviously, there's looooots of training involved, so they aren't just fat dudes
