How To Keep cable Strands Together While Crimping Lugs
Vložit

- We recently shared a video where we used a cable tie to keep strands together when crimping. Some viewers in the comments thought that there was a better way, and they were right.
Here's a neat trick using the insulation itself when you need to crimp a copper tube or lug terminal onto very flexible, fine-stranded class 6 conductors.
In this video, we've used a Klauke battery-powered hydraulic crimping tool to crimp a 70mm sq class 6 conductor.

I mean it’s cool but I just twist the wire, works every time
If you MOVE the cord a lot . Similar to how you plug in your phone cord every day..slowly over time, the "flexic damage," will un twist or split them apart slowly
@TheChangenick that wont matter in this application. the cross section is just to keep flexibility in the cable, but since this is only at the end where its crimped in the terminal flexibility isnt an issue. thow a heavy shrink tube on it to keep it from bending for another 1/2 inch up from the terminal and you are good to go.
Ikr its just extra work and effort if you fucked up just re twist the wire.

Well, it is nice and neat at least.
I just twist the wire same direction as it’s twisted. Always worked perfect for me!
did you notice the strands are in bunches, then laid together? Good luck 'just twisting' the end of that...
@@kenniffss just tell me you can’t do it…. Shrug…. I never have that problem! It’s fairly simple to just put it at a angle and twist it to the same direction while pushing it in. You may get a few strand which you can simply push in with a finger nail…. But if you really stink at wiring then it’s fine. Use these so called hack ;) or just learn how to do it with ease.
@addiction2bass mate, I have made off more cables than you could shake a stick at, some lay nice when stripped, some don't, that type of cable usually falls into the latter category. Different cables call for different techniques...
@@kenniffss it’s ok if you can’t mate. Lol sounds like you super mad. I’ve done more wiring of all types and these larger wires are only difficult for beginners. It’s simple… don’t flex the wire around once stripped… don’t try and twist the wires to the shape you think you need and let the wire slide into the terminal don’t smash it into the terminal! This is where the type of terminal you buy will make or break you!!! The cheap crap terminals won’t have that larger flare out and of course it’s much more difficult to get all strands to go in smoothly… I’ve done a lot of car audio for myself and friends! I typically use my old vise to crimp cables. I find it easy that way cause I’ve just never bought one of those hydraulic crimpers. And because it’s a old vise so it takes the abuse lol don’t try that with a new vise from the stores lol they couldn’t make one crimp without stripping out the screw lol

That's a cool trick it's better than the last one I saw where they just slide the insulation back and leave it there with you know a gaping gap.
What's wrong with a gaping gap? 😳
@@tomg1066 According to my wife, a lot 😅
„I just twist it a bit“ - Yeah sure I do that too but with thin wires that are not as big as my pinky. I tried that with a starter motor cable and I can tell you that it does not twist unless you strip it more than you need to. So this is actually a useful tip for big wires - I mean look at the crimping tool, it’s a massive cable :D
I have issues with this, especially when you're fitting low gauge cable into ferrules or terminals, even twisting them yourself can be a pain. I appreciate this tip even if others dont!! It's just useful to have when you might need it.
Pro tip that stripping tool can be used to cut down the length of the rubber as well so you can just peel it off instead of fight the friction from the rubber. As far as the wires not being frayed just don't suck😂

Nice Try.
Twisted cable strands can relax after being crimped. Compromising the connector. It also adds resistance to the connection. People assume it makes it better to twist the strands when it doesn't help at all. That is why SOPs like IPC620WHMA exist.
If you have to do all this you are not a professional

I sometimes use a zip ties, that works pretty well too
When I was still working, we had the similar stripping tool made by the Lawson company. Very handy and we had the little anvil with the pointed chisel end that you sat on the back of your vice or the concrete floor and smack it with a hammer to cramp everything together then if you solder it as well, you have a lifetime connection that water can’t get down in and corrode. Because the solder has lead in it which will not rust. And solder takes up all the voids around every wire if it’s done right
