I think melodrama is part of the South Asian cinema tradition; that’s why Dev Patel kept showing that heartbreaking flashback. It’s really tugging at our heartstrings, and it worked on me.
Character development? His trauma made him who he is.
so true!
Not me, bored me to tears. I don't need nor care about Indian
JOHN WICKS back story.
Even though it’s still low budget, you have to give props to Dev Patel for making a debut with an action film instead of doing a small scale drama or comedy
Uhhhh have you seen drive?
These are the type of things people say for the people they want to win.
@GrandeTheftDesperado you don't.
The Raid movies budget is way cheaper than Monkey Man and Monkey Man has less action.

We Moved Pass That From The Live Action 2010 The Last Airbender and its still Horrible
Dev Patel turned his back on mainstream Hollywood after the failure of The Last Airbender.
@@Hectorferjr2 Absolutely and I wish him the best on His Direction
@@Hectorferjr2 If they ask him for f.e. a 100 million dollar movie he's on the first plane to LA. And rightly so.
I thought he was the only good thing in that film 😂
I think it's a strong debut for Dev as a director. I think he made some interesting choices. Yes, the camera is shaking and frantic and out of focus for much of the early action scenes. I noticed that after the training scene, when he becomes a "true warrior", the camera is more stable and follows the action smoother. That seemed like a conscious thematic choice. With that said, the editing was a little too frantic in the first half. I really hope this does well and Dev gets to direct more movies in the future.
All of the message in the movie applies to the United States. Poverty is worse than ever, homelessness is worse than ever, religion is often used to justify the stratification of society and maintaining hierarchy. I don't recall if you reviewed that movie "Origin" it is based on Isabel Wilkerson and her book "Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents." It is a good book to read to gain insight into how caste affects society.
I heard that this movie was going to be on Netflix and Jordan Peele saw it and decided to put it on the big screen
Jordan Peele is Making Those Netflix Bucks Since He Directed Get Out & Those Horror Films
Oh that's also because Netflix was going to shelf the film for criticizing Hindu Nationalism. Apparently Netflix is pushing hard in India.
In my opinion it should have been on Netflix, I feel like it would’ve made WAY more money than the big screen. Ironically It has all the ingredients and flaws of a recipe for a Netflix Classic (Shakycam, A24 Feel)
Allegedly Netflix had been siting on this film for 3 years cause they were worried the themes of it would piss off the Indian Government. Who knows how long it would been kept on a shelf if Jordan Peele hadn’t pushed to get it to the Big Screen
Netflix was going to drop it and then Peele swooped in and decided that not only it should still be made, it should also be in cinemas.
When I thought of Monkey Man the first thing comes in my head is Hey Arnold episode when a dude dressed up in cape and pretend to be Monkey Man

Monkey Man Made Alot Of Cameos From Hey Arnold The Movie
Love The Raid, but another bad ass building complex battle action film that doesn’t get enough credit in my opinion is Karl Urban in 2012s Dredd!!!
That movie is awesome
That got too much credit in my opinion (I know a lot of people like it though). They copies The Raid, and it;s super repetitive and the 3D is an unnecessary gimmick.
The character Dev Patel played in ‘Hotel Mumbai’ goes through it…

Im glad I'm not alone about the cinematography. I had a hard time following the action in the first half with all the shakey came close ups and rapid editing during the fights.
But in the 2nd half, it looked so much better. Especially during the punching bag montage and the kitchen fight scene.
Finally we men of indian descent can look like badasses
Film was fantastic. The soundtrack was phenomenal it was a lot more layered than the trailer shows. Only complaint was that camera work made me wanna vomit lol shaky cam makes me naseaous
I cannot in good concious say that Dev Patel delivered such a visceral and bloody film. He incorporates so many different styles in here im glad its not a John Wick clone as that is Dev has told in interviews which it isnt
Really excited to see what he does next which a less troublesome production
There is a lot here. Is it too much for the movie? For Dev? Or, was it too much for Martin? This is Devs gamble and he rolled the dice for me its all 7s
No lie, I felt like Martin&Korey when Julian said the women in the movie looked good.
So? Your point?
I swear he said men in the movie
The story is very brave n inspiring n this needs to be brought to peoples consciousness.
yeah...trailer was better...i thought i was getting indian john wick, but there weren't many fights/shoot outs...at least enough to justify it's 2 hour run time.
Agreed
I was pleasantly surprised it wasn't that. It had more substance.
The trailer editor should've been co-director. That dude knows how to make a movie look awesome
I think you forgot how that went with Suicide Squad…
But that's not really the kind of movie it is. It's visceral, not just a visual spectacle for people to sit back and watch from afar.
I give solid 8.5/10 . This movie is masterclass .

Not sure if anyone else cought the Lion reference Dev Patel added with the little boy Sheru. But i thought it was a nice easter egg since I loved him in that film.
Regardless of the ratings, I admire Patel not making this a mindless, over the top action film. There was heart to this. Efficiently covered such hefty themes with aplomb. Solid Matinee in my book.
From the trailer, I thought it was a horror movie where he actually turns into a monkey.

@@G-LukeJA Jordan Peele endorsing it also made me think it was a horror movie.
I think Dev put in as much stuff into the movie he could because he might never get a chance to direct another movie since Hollywood lots of times only gives you one shot and if you’re movie does bad you might not get another chance
Good thing we have streaming services now.
He can direct smaller scale productions too.
lol digging the contrasting opinions on this one haha
I liked it more then the first john wick movie. Just my opinion
Liked the movie but man, can we chill on flashbacks and being overly artistic when making movies. Like you not bout to get an award, they don't matter anyway so just make the movie straight forward.
This is bold story telling 💯 deeper meaning behind it!! The movie is better than the trailer. But it did have a few flaws tho
What? Politics? That’s the deeper meaning ? Or the mythology ?
The guy who played the villain would be a great live action Omni Man
Thanks to Jordan Peele for saving this movie ! Netflix almost canceled the film altogether .
Would like to see Double Toasted review more movies from India/Bollywood
That would be cool
Considering how much they bitch about movies being long, I doubt it (their loss)
Nah Bollywood movies are terrible and the community is toxic AF. I remember a few people reviewed RRR called it mid and people lost their mind.
This is not a Bollywood movie nor is it an Indian movie.
@@ToxicHAL There are always movies like this. I think Robert Downey Junior is overrated and got flack from that as well. It was one little comment and for years people were responding to it. The thread is over a 1000 responses long. I'm a Star Wars fan. Now if you think there is a community toxic when you tell them you like or don't like something, that's the one.
RRR was a phenomenon so it got a lot of fans (I didn't even finish it),
There are some good Bollywood movies, but they are not your typical musical-like movies (RRR even though it's violent, still kinda is).
I'm really glad i skipped the trailers cause it sounds like it really affected the viewing. I went in only hearing about the movie and I had a great time.
aesthetically, this looks more like the crow than the crow does
Those action scenes in Monkey Man are… Bananas… I’ll see my way out lol
I was pleasantly surprised that the movie wasn't as polished as the trailer! My issue with John Wick is that it's all style over substance, so it was nice to have something with a story to back up the action.
I haven't been to the theater in a long time i wonder how it looks on the big screen
Martin needs to have his own movie review channel. He's on point on his movie reviews.
Really the only complaint I have is the shaky camera they had going on (we know the reasons) but other than that, I really enjoyed it! 🔥🔥
Saw it Friday and I'm right in the middle of the gang here with my thoughts. Overall I enjoyed it and can't wait to see what DP does next now that he's hopefully learned from some of this films mistakes.
I was genuinely surprised by this movie I loved it
I loved "Monkey Man." A dark tale of revenge. Along with the brutal action you also get a deeper story of culture and the politics and how people can come together and fight oppression. You also get a very effective story line of trans / non-binary heroes, my personal fav aspect of the story. There's so much here that I loved.
I personally loved that about this movie as well. To bring light to their plight and injustice and make them heroes at the same time had me cheering in the audience
Thought the movie was overall good. However, in my opinion, the big flaw is that it took too long to make me care about him & his goal.
Can’t wait to see it!
This movie is pretty dope. I appreciated the disoriented feeling from how it was shot to mimic his internal feelings. Too many flashbacks. Couldve been 10 minutes shorter. Soundtrack was dope. Fight scenes were great aside from a couple of the just getting his ass kicked in the ring. This really was a John Wick 1 with substance.
Chappie is on this though… Sharto Copley…

THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING OLDBOY!!! MAY STILL BE MY FAVORITE REVENGE THEMED FILM. MAN...PLEASE REVIEW THAT ONE!
Just finished my screening- i cant say i was blown away, but every part of it is executed well, and the degree of political ballsiness stands to elevate or distract pretty hard. Notes are definitely taken from Raid cinematography, in a good way, and i could really go for a sequel that goes as comparatively hard as Raid 2.
Ummm what r u smoking comparing this to the raid 2?
I mean the last crazy movies I seen featuring people from India were Waltair Veeraya and Leo Das on Netflix.
I do think there are a lot of themes in this movie but I didn’t think it suffered from having them there, just from underdeveloping them. But even so, I hope this movie will show film makers and writers that you don’t need to hold back from making something that reflects our time or the society we live in. And my god , he is crazy and I ate it up. I wanna see more crazy ass shit from Dev Patel. Love how much heart this film has and the style and soundtrack made it a treat. Maybe a little less shaky cam but not many other notes. He pretty much hit a home run for the first go.
I just saw monkey man. I loved this movie. Best action movie I've seen in a while. Just a kick ass movie
Is that baby alien? Lol
When will it be released in India?
Damn im bummed i didn't see Martin at SXSW would have loved to meet him. anyways i really liked this film but had a few issues

This movie is Indian Black Panther+John Wick
No it's not. The only thing MM has in common with Wick is the martial arts and brutal violence. We see his backstory and how childhood trauma molded him. I can relate to some of the things his character has been through and as a Spiritualist I practice meditation and rituals. Dev impressed me. I look forward to what he'll do next!

I am from India and I must clear the misconceptions about caste system in India. Yes there is in rural areas but we have come a long way towards equality through policies and society in general moving on. Also caste system does not only belong to Hindu community, you can be a Muslim, Christian or Sikh and still have the same caste system.
But this movie says caste system is everywhere in India is like saying every white American is Racist today . That's obviously not true, the last embers of racism or castism left shouldn't be inflamed in my opinion.
Majority of us are good people striving for equality and a better life. And not having one single representation of them in this movie is malicious or plain ignorant.
Caste system exists in most metro cities in our country, especially on the labour, homeless and daily wage workers. You can see it in every public transport, Swiggy / Zomato / Amazon order, IPL discussions, construction sites, footpaths, hospitals and traffic lights if you pay attention.. It's also much more normalised in the country sadly. It's great to be privileged enough to turn a blind eye to it, but I see it in your comment as well - when you admit that no community is immune from it and everyone has to deal with it. There's maybe 1-2% indians who have moved away from their casteists ideologies or beliefs but most have some or the other strong association just because they weren't taught better.
There has also been a huge rise in identity and caste/religion based politics recently from ruling parties and opposition which has given another rise to a new wave altogether. I wish we were past it brother, but from where I see - your view is one of a staunch optimist. In reality, the roots of the caste system still has a strong hold on most Indian's daily lives and mentality.
@@SamBanerjee92Well I personally see the society I see around me moved on our simply just don't care about caste anymore. Just pain common sense dictates the absolence of caste in current society and people still preaching about caste are old gen community or the opposition parties riling up social divisions just for political gain just like in America with racism.
Is it true cast system and racism exist? Yes. But people like you and me have money on from it so it's the best population in my openion. That's why the Damn reservation culture still exists to bring everyone in a level playing field.
Brother who is denied a job today because of his caste? If someone does one complaint and the culprits are send to jail. I don't know what country you live in.
@@megav5722 more than denying a job, you see caste system in the subjugation and selective hiring of labourers and workers and daily slaves and a lot of the grimy work that the upper class deem unworthy of doing. People are still relegated to rot on the streets, in brothels and clean the sewers due to caste.. things that upper class have the privilege to altogether avoid.
So if we ignore that grime that exists in the underbelly of every place and only look at the top institutions, then we can claim that reservation itself is the key. But they don't solve the issue for the 99% who don't have access and their local cultural dynamics itself prevent them from doing any better..
The regular middle class life doesn't have to notice this dirty culture every day all the time, so also best of them to avoid noticing it. But again, looking at our underpaid maids and servants at home - ask yourself how many upper castes are struggling to get those jobs because the grassroots are still denying opportunity for education, stable housing, sanitation and basic utilities to the downtrodden (not to mention the political parties playing then like a fiddle for monetary and political gain)
Honestly, I cannot be optimistic about this situation as much as you are.. appreciate the respectful conversation though 👍🏾
Thank you
@@SamBanerjee92Brother you ain't making things better by just pointing Your perspective out. Just complaining doesn't fix things. Try to be better at fixing things rather than just pointing out and crying like this movie does.

I saw this last night. I’m sorry but this was all over the place. The action scenes in the beginning of the film were all over the place. And the camera was way too shaky. It took me out of the plot at times in the film
I Feel You Because The Shaky Camera Took You Out From Those Transformers Movies
What would you give it out of 10?
Is it over rated to call it the "Indian John wick"??
From those that saw it, yeah. It seems the production problems behind the camera reared their ugly heads in detrimental ways. From what I heard, he lost at least 1 DP on this, hence the reason there is such an inconsistency to the quality of the action choreography. Ranging from solid bloody fun to unfocused shaky cam vomit.
