Very cool old school fighter from the ‘muscle’ jet era. I remember when I was a kid you could pick up mig 17s for around 25k in the areotrader magazine. Them days are long long gone!
The MIG-21 was and still is a great fighter/interceptor jet that is credited with the downing of dozens of F-4s and F-105s in Vietnam, resulting in the introduction of TOP GUN training in order to even the playing field. Until the tactics of the USAF and USN changed and improved, it was ruling the skies. Vietnamese radar and air defense system are everywhere in their territory which support the Viet pilots a lot to know what is happening to them, there’s an average estimates that for each 10 sparrow missiles fired, only about 2-3 of them actually hit the target. So most of the fights between American and Vietnam planes are…dog fight, yes you heard it right, despite being an interceptor, Mig21 have better vertical climb speed and slightly better maneuver than Phantoms at high altitude, and the Vietnamese pilots used that advantage very well to out turn every US plane in almost every situations.
