- As I look closer at the forge welded elements for the andiron project I find that the square bars aren't perfectly square. So lets make some top and bottom V blocks or swages for use under the fly press.
Black Bear Forge is a small one person blacksmith shop located in southern Colorado. My current focus is shifting away from commissions and customer orders and towards education through these videos on CZcams. Thank you for watching

Unpretentious! I really appreciate your discussions during your presentations. Thanks and have a happy day!
John, whenever you say to get up and go work in my own shop, I do it. Every time.
Hi John, I like the way you end your videos. Get out in your shop and make something, be safe, and ware your safety glasses. Never leave home without them. Last night at the local guild, I was finishing up the stem on a leaf, next thing I see is the leaf heading towards my face. I close my eyes turn my head just enough to get a glancing blow off the corner of the hinge of my glasses and singed a little hair by my left ear, then floated to the floor. I quickly picked it back up and not wanting to wast the heat made several more hits.
After replaying this several times in my mind, at the time that the leaf came out of the tongs, I felt in the handles the shock like a mouse trap going off prematurely when setting one. I was using horseshoe tongs with divots in the jaws. The question is, did I pick up an explosive charge when I took the metal out of the coal fire and it ignited when I struck the hot iron.
I do know that coal dust is very explosive, I have emptied the forge pot twice with gas explosions. But that is another story. No I didn't have to change my undees, just another day in the shop, that makes it interesting. I just wanted to share this little safety note, things do happen that were not planed. Yes be safe out there.
Why would 5 people dislike this epic video?
Respect to Tipton for the tree ornaments, they were very good. Thank you John for the new knowledge. Congrats on achieving more than 100,00!
Thank you for the kind words!
ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!!! YES MAKE IRON CHRISTMAS TREE 🎄
HI John it's good watching dies been made ,I worked with power presses a lot and made meny dies for off set brackets hinge plates and flange plates .I miss those days ,maybe I well buy that fly press I have dreaming of.
Great video on fly press tooling! Here is a idea I use on mine. I have a plate with a square hole in it to accept all my anvil hardy hole tooling. This helps me not having to make double tools.
I have considered doing that.
Good morning John. Great job on making the tools you need and sharing with everyone how you can do it. It’s always a great blessing to be able to watch your videos. Thanks for sharing with us.
Love seeing the fly press. You gave so much good information!
Nice save. More knowledge from a top-notch blacksmith. Thanks again, the year is off to a fine start.
For a first project, the gift to John. the Smith who made the twisted ornaments.. Nice job.. they look good! An even twist and a Nice finish, good to the eye. keep it up.
Thank you so much!!!!
Love your hand-made tools. Keep up the good work... :)
Making tools for your project is always a good idea. Welding is always handy and there is room for so many new things to make. Great video👍
Forging square bar to diamond is my specialty
Nice one John
A fly press is definitely on my wish list as I really don't want to go anywhere near power hammers due to living in a presidential area. I'm also going to experiment with abour press's and possibly a treadle hammer so there's less strain on my back (I have severe back problems so I can't do lots of hammer work). Thanks for the video, helpful as always 👍
Maybe we can all make ornaments for the Black Bear Forge shop tree.
I love that idea!
Dam I wish my fly press had a 1" hole, my is 38mm so unless I get lucky, I doubt I can use the screw/bolt trick but I'm definitely going to make a Vee block for my fly press. Great work and your videos are always helpful.
The quality of these videos is incredible. Excellent lighting great camera angles, and so very few blips from editing. Great content, 👍
Thanks so much John. Definitely an interesting tool feature. Perhaps on day I'll have a fly press. But as you said adaptable to other tooling options.
Looking forward to seeing more on the andirons
🙏 Blessings now
Crawford out ⚒️🧙♂️
Thank you John for another great video that we can learn from! I love the blacksmith Christmas tree idea!
Ok I am thinking the Blacksmiths Christmas tree will be a long project so more video's WOOT ! :}
Excellent vid, thanks! I'd love to see more power hammer tooling videos. Happy New Year!
..Well don sir!! i like the bolt trick. i'm not a welder either, nor do i play one on TV or CZcams. My beads look like a chikin had diarrhea but, they hold for the most part.
Lol at least you're honest, shows room for improvement! :)
Here in Brazil it's very hard to find a flypress, even an used one. It is amazing how this kind of tools are availsble in the US. I don't have a flypress, but I've enjoyed your video! Thank you very much!
These aren’t real common in the US. People are starting to import old ones from the UK. Mine is imported from India.
Love the tooling John. I need to get me a fly press I've always wanted one and so quiet.
Good job and keep up the good work.
Good post my friend !
Another great video
I love learning from your videos, your breakdown and analysis is so thorough and concise, no nonsense approach, just a late happy holidays and a thank you for all that you share! Deepest Regards from my shed to your forge good sir!
Hey John. I love your videos and I'm learning so much from you. I love the way you discuss alternative methods for doing something. It is much more informative than most of blacksmithing videos out there. You do great work and I think your videos are invaluable tools for anyone wanting to get started in blacksmithing. Keep up the great work my friend.
P.S, Still waiting on the pot rack video lol.
Thanks and have a great day in the shop sir
Man colorado mountains in january.... even the light looks cold
Thanks John. Take.care and God bless.
Very practical solution! Love it!
You just an awesome teacher thanks
Thank you John
idea for a new weekly vid, how about 'monster in the bucket', simalar to hook of the week, you use scrap from the bucket to forge an item of the monster each week, like one week the feet, next week the head etc then you get to make the monster at the end of the month
Informative as always John! Love you videos.
That a very cool way to make tools
Good fun, thank you for showing.....
Hello John
Good video
Thanks for sharing you knowlege
Good bless you
Yours Frank
Something that I was thinking of when you were talking about the shoulder, John..... you could also hammer the round bolt into square stock and have a swage block of sorts....
Edit: You could improvise a guillotine tool of some sort🤷🏼♂️. Just something that popped into my head, thought I'd share.
Was it square ,just wondering ? Nice way to v blocks
Was what square?
He said he was going to check his stock to see if it was square was just wondering the outcome I imagine that it is because John is such a craftsman
I will show that in the next video on this project. Still to hot to handle when I left the shop after filming.
Also sorry Tyler Thompson I meant to leave that in the comment section not as a reply to your comment
great idea
I hate having plans😆
I wish he was my cool uncle....
I hope blacksmiths never skinned cats, but there are so many old sayings that began in the blacksmith shop. Here's one fine example of there's more than one way to ...
Strike while the iron' s hot, my friend.
Nice 👍👍👍👍thanks
Fly press is so cool, bet they cost less than a Little Giant. By the way does that bunny hole in your vest go all the way through? Did you get burnt if it does? Asking for a friend 😀
Just into the pocket

Can you do a video on how to make and temper a touch mark?
Hi John
I’m intrigued by this fly press how is it constructed?
🔨
thanks very much
Did you use 8 grade 1" bolt for the shaft and how did you cut it?
Was the V block material made from mild steel or medium?
My #5 arrives today and I need the advice.... thanks so much!
No, there isn't any need for a high strength shaft. Same for the V blocks, mild steel works just fine.
