  • Using a fly press to make butterfly hinges can be quick and efficient. While I strongly believe that one should learn to forge hinge eyes using a hammer at the anvil. There are times when production needs require something a bit more efficient.
    The hinge blanks I am using in this video are made by Stoney Point Forge

    I kinda like the music when you do use it. Normally it's pleasant and you're either not trying to talk at the same time or you have the music at a volume that isn't competing with your voice. Some of your compatriots use music that's not to my liking or try to talk over it and it's so loud that it's annoying when I'm trying to glean knowledge from their experience. Keep up the good work John. 👍

    Good looking hinges. Nothing wrong with jigs, they do increase production and save the customer more money. Cost per piece is less for both the craftsman and the customer. If cost gets prohibitively high, and you can't sell the items, then it is a complete loss instead of a partial gain. It's just good economics.

    it dawned on me while you were pressing the hinge eyes that you could forge a die for each half of the hinge to cut them out of a flat sheet instead of having to buy the pre cut hinge blanks. the idea is simple but the die's would be hard to make, but your talented...you could do it ! a cutter die for the fly press to cut the shape out of the recessed die on the bottom....
    if it was done right you could make hundreds of hinge blanks quickly.... or perhaps make the dies for the hydraulic press
    and take the work out of it completely ! something to keep in mind if you need to make a bunch of them eh ?

    Thanks again for making another video, even with the “oops”. One question I continue to have is why does the project gets looser when heating if heating swells iron up?

    • @thomasarussellsr
      @thomasarussellsr Před 5 lety +2

      More mass in the eye than in the pin, hence it swells outward more than the pin does. Plus, I think maybe it relaxes the spring put into the eye from bending it. Maybe John will answer with an explanation that comes more from experience than from physics.

    I am not sure if you have, but if not, have you considered a video on blacksmith terms in our language. Such as, "too many irons in the fire", or "strike while the iron is hot", or going after something "hammer and tongs"? These are colloquialisms that have permeated our speech, but many people don't know where they come from, or what they mean. My personal favorite is the "too many irons in the fire" because I did that, and to my shame, more than once. In a coal forge it can be too easy to loose a piece of iron when doing production work. It sure adds to the big clinker in the bottom of the bowl.
    I enjoyed today's video, and to see how to do production hinge work.

    • @BlackBearForge
      @BlackBearForge  Před 5 lety +1

      I haven't tried it, but if the stops prevent over travel of the ram it should work. But even the slightest over travel could really deform the hinge and perhaps damage the die.

    Like a lot of the previous commentors, I too can't afford a fly press. I was able to acquire an arbor press (2 ton). Would the 1/8 inch thick hinges bend easily if they were heated in the forge first before putting them under something like a small arbor press? I had envisioned a jig like the ones you're using at one point. I haven't had a chance to try. Cheers.
