SHARR MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK | Exploring South West KOSOVO

The Sharr Mountain National Park (Parku kombetar Malet e Sharrit) area in Kosovo is reputedly one of the most beautiful and untouched regions of Kosovo, harnessing forest covered mountains, rolling valleys, pretty little towns and villages, as well as a lot of viewpoints and points of interest.
I left Prizren with minimal information and no hardened plans - my intention was to just drive! My only objective was to reach Pristina by nightfall and enjoy the scenery as I drove. My first stop was at a place called the Prizren Viewpoint where I found a beautiful view looking back at the city in the distance. A scattering of small hilltop villages could be seen all around and apart from the odd car driving past there was nobody around for miles.
Further up the road I stopped at another viewpoint that looked out the other way, and whilst the view was magnificent I couldn’t help but to feel saddened by the incredible amount of rubbish dumped on the side of the road. Why would anybody do that? I wanted to highlight it in this video because unfortunately it’s not an isolated incident, I’ve seen tonnes of waste dumped all over the country. To be fair, it’s not just Kosovo - this is a trend I’ve seen in many of the Balkan countries. Let's hope things start to change in the not too distant future.
The route continued past various hiking trails and roadside memorials dedicated to fallen UCK (Kosovo Liberation Army) soldiers. It got me thinking once again how this spectacular area that these days I can just freely drive through would have been a war zone just a few decades ago. Looking around and listening to the silence you would never know.
I managed to connect onto a few unpaved roads and for a little while I was worried about what I had gotten myself into, thankfully everything worked out and I arrived in the small town of Reçan where I took a walk past the river and along its main street. I continued on to a ski village called Prevalla where the temperature turned cold with all the additional elevation I’d gained.
I took a quick look around a local market and then got back on the road, heading for the eastern region of the mighty Sharr Mountains.

Hi Matt, interesting and beautiful mountain area. You are right some of the houses towards the end look like ski lodges in Switzerland. Such a shame about the litter in some places in those beautiful nature places. I really do hope they sort this problem out and people will start some kind of a clean up initiative. It was amusing again to see in the beginning the direction to the top in minutes instead of the distance. It always buffles me because everyone has their own walking speed and people like to stop for picnics and that. I think the direction should be in miles/km and maybe with added extra information for the elevation but not in minutes. So strange. Enjoyed this episode!
Yes that's a fair point regarding the distances, I guess the longer the trail the more difficult it is to judge when you're talking in units of time. I'd love to see that ski lodge fully operating in the winter season!!
Shame about the litter. Throws off the beautiful views. Wow! You legit drove through the forest. Definitely don't want to park your car on the edge over the river! Gorgeous landscape. Kids always trying to be in your videos! Great episode!
Thanks, yes that parking was venturesome to say the least! Enjoyed the forest drive, not as bad as I thought it was going to be! Yes shame about the litter, hopefully attitudes change in the near future.

That Sharr Mountain drive was stunning! 😍😍😍 I'd be very curious to know what the ski resorts are like in the winter. As a kid, I was taken to Pamporovo and Borovets in Bulgaria and in comparison to the Alps, they were so cheap, but the amount of runs was limited so began to get a little boring after a week - a case of you get what you pay for I guess? I'm impressed the rental car is still holding up when you have that noise coming from it and those roads it's tackling!!!
Yes it was a wonderful drive, I intended to make one video driving through the park and ending up in Pristina but I just had too much footage so the second part will be up today. I suspect that these ski villages and slopes are very much intended for a domestic audience where as the slopes of Italy and Switzerland etc are designed to deal with a large number of international skiers, although I too would love to see them operating in the wintertime. The rental car was tough as nails, I often wonder what it's doing now?! Possibly a scrap yard 😄
