      Run DMC were the first to shift the game in a major way into the new school. Not till Eric B and Rakim came out where Rakim created a paradigm shift lyrically and the sound of music. You had other rappers that were innovating in their own way before Rakim like Kool Moe Dee ,Caz,Melle Mel,,T La Rock, Mc Shan but Rakim was on another level which led into the Golden Era.

      @@rarerock5020 Before Canibus you had Nas that elevated the game since Rakim which is no coincidence since they hailed him as the second coming of Ra but Canibus was a beast when he came out and took lyricism to another level and was the 1st emcee in my opinion to be a lyrical wordsmith and getting alot of hype and mass appeal within a short span of time before he became a footnote. In alot of ways I feel he is under appreciated but Canibus in his prime was the most feared emcee back then.

    Run-DMC would change their stance on rap with a social meaning, once political rap was in vogue in the late-80s. They tried to jump on the movement, but it was too late. They had already established themselves as an apolitical band.

    I don't get it. They sport Def Jam jackets, Run's brother (who co-founded Def Jam) produced their early records, that Krush Groove movie starring the group was a fictionalized account of Def Jam. I actually thought they were a Def Jam act.
    So why were they on Profile Records?

    • @doncatalog
      @doncatalog Před 8 lety

      Yes, they were on Profile. Def Jam wasn't full blown when Run-DMC started. Run-DMC were around 83. Even though It's Yours by T-La Rock was the first record with the words Def Jam listed, LL Cool J's 85 release was the first album on the Defense Jam label.

    • @nilhav
      @nilhav Před 6 lety +3

      They were first signed on Profile. Then Russell hooked up with Rick Rubin who initially had the Def Jam title with the T-La Rock single. They started the label with LL as it's first artist. Run-DMC was supposed to switch over but couldn't get out of their contract with Profile.

    And i disagree with Run..the 70s had lots of beats to cover especially from the disco era..take the sugarhill gang for instance..''rappers delight'' is based on Chic's ''Good Times''..but ok, that was '79 when people still demanded that disco beat..
