My Vegan Keto Results - Overall Felt Pretty Good... - Thomas Delauer
The reality is, I wanted to prove the fact that while you are doing a ketogenic diet, you can implement vegan principles that actually end up being really, really effective.
The first couple of days, it was pretty difficult. It was a big adjustment. I would say that having to get used to eating not only a stricter ketogenic diet but keeping meat out of the equation was really, really tough, and here's why.
Let me give you an example. On vegan keto, there was no meat, so I was solely dependent on basically fiber and fat, which means that the overall food volume was significantly less. So my stomach from the [inaudible] side of things was still like, "Whoa man. You need to eat." I was hungry and the first two days in, if it wasn't for just consistently drinking Sunwarrior protein shakes, I probably would have had a really, really tough time, but even then, it was difficult.
Then about 48 hours into it, something happened. About 48 hours in, I ended up really having high levels of ketones. The first two days, my levels of ketones were lower than they normally would be. Like if I was first starting keto that wasn't vegan, I would usually have moderate ketone levels, like I might be at a 1.5 or so, but what I found is when I went on vegan keto, within two days, I was already at three [inaudible].
I was registering high levels of ketones.
I started feeling really good after a couple of days. Here's what was really interesting and when it comes like a food addiction standpoint, this is where I felt like I had the most improvement. It started happening in Days Two and Three. I've always struggled with a little bit of food addiction. It doesn't matter, if you're an addictive personality, it can be tough, period.
I think just the lack of stress made a big difference anyway. All of a sudden my blood pressure dropped. Now I did notice that I dropped an immense amount of water weight. Now Day Three and Four I was already down four pounds. Now I was already ketogenic leading into this, so I lost another four pounds and a lot of it felt like water. I started to get even a little drawn out in the face for a little bit. I was like, "Okay, this is kind of interesting." Now around this time period I also discovered that I was losing some strength and it was starting to concern me a little bit.
They're awesome, so Sunwarrior is like the leading pea protein ... If you're curious, there's a link down in the description that gives you my special discount on their pea protein, but anyway, they sponsored this whole event because they knew I was doing it.
Normally I can put a weighted vest on and do 18 Burpees, and then I'm usually pretty crapped out. If I'm wearing a 40 or 60 pound weight vest, I can do about 18 burpees before my heart rate is getting close to 200 and I'm about to pass out. Get this, on vegan keto, when I put my weight vest on, 32. I got 32 Burpees, which is just for me, that's a test of my VO2 max. So I was like, "Holy cow. I think the high levels of ketones, I think the plant-based fuel is really making a difference," but the fact is, it was just getting difficult for me to sustain.
Now Amber was making amazing things with flax eggs and we were using the cauliflower crust pizzas from Cali-Flour Foods, it was awesome, the plant-based crust using vegan cheese. So many amazing things, like chia puddings and everything like that. All the good food that you could ever imagine, but the fact is, I don't think that I was getting enough of the nutrients that I really could have. I needed to be getting more in the way of veggies. Anyway, flash forward the next week. It was difficult for me to even want to come off of this diet. I felt really, really good mentally.
The problem is is that I'm not accustomed to that lifestyle, so there's a lot of things that took a lot of work for me, that took a lot of time. My wife was having to spend a lot of time in the kitchen. We've got a young kid at home, it was really tough.
Now let me also say that whether you're vegan keto or not, the Sunwarrior warrior blend works great, so it doesn't have to be a vegan protocol. That works. I use that when I'm not doing vegan keto. At the end of the day, here's how it works. The vegan keto diet allows you to produce high levels of beta-hydroxy butyrate. Beta-hydroxy butyrate makes it so you don't need as much protein, because the beta-hydroxy butyrate spares muscle

Human is also an animal, and so I suggest you stop projecting the parts of yourself you've not yet accepted onto others and forgive that you hold against yourself and deny by feigning righteousness over and through others. And all energy is the same, in terms of atoms it's literally the same; have you no empathy for the lepton or the proton?

  • @TheIntuitiveBodyFoodieNetwork

Another great video Thomas! Truly enjoyed hearing your honest down & up experience and evaluation. Happy to hear you confirmed that as vegans, the body requires less protein as this seems to be a long-standing yet false concern many non-vegans seems to have about vegans. So long as you get all of your amino acids the body will manufacture its own protein. It's far more important to consume high quality omega 3's, D3, B12, and iron because the body can't manufacture those. When I was vegan I relied heavily on food combining to get my full spectrum amino acids) as well as fermented foods to help reduce sugars and overall carbs, otherwise it's no longer keto friendly. To get sufficient protein and full spectrum amino acids, I fermented and ate (and occasionally still do) quinoa (a full spectrum amino acid food), oatmeal, buckwheat, millet, kaniwa, lentils, beans and raw nuts & seeds. Obviously fats included organic cocoa butter, cocoa paste, MCT oil, coconut cream, coconut milk, coconut oil, avocados, avocado oil, macadamia oil, walnut oil, & high quality olive oils and used in salad dressings, broths, teas, coffees and decadent hot chocolates. Unfortunately my body doesn't tolerate coconut products as well as it does the other non-coconut products so I used them sparingly. Btw, from an economic standpoint, as I realize you need to create & generate potential income from every video you create, should you choose to incorporate fermented foods into any of your upcoming vegan ventures and to help get around the 'sponsorship' part, you can always partner with integral companies that sell the raw products, make the recipes yourself, and then provide links to the unfermented products at a discount for your viewers, maybe in a box form like you do with Thrive. Organic fair-trade vegan foods are quite costly so a discount would be a welcomed reprieve to your vegan viewers. That said, aim for high quality fair-trade organic food products.

I've been vegan for over 4 years and most of them a low fat (no processed fat) higher carb vegan. I stayed away from processed foods and ate very clean. I was always super active but have lived with RA (rheumatoid arthritis) since before going vega. Earlier this year I felt like I needed a reset and heard alot about how low inflammatory Keto was so I decided to try it.
In the first two weeks I dropped 13 lbs and I had NO pain in my joints. Was working out 6 days a week and some of those I had two workouts a day. I had great energy levels but no matter how much protein I had I was not able to lift as much, I also had a hard time with cardio. Which was not a big deal and it actually helped me let go of some ego issues as well as just relax into my body and give it what it needed and not to push it more than it wanted. Basically, I have been in ketosis for over 2 months now and I feel great. With that being said I do miss veggies and fruits and I will be going back to them and this time some extra fats. :) But like you said, I think doing the vegan keto is an amazing way to reset so I will be doing it a few times a year for a few months each time. Its make a huge difference in my ever evolving heath journey.
P.S. Thanks for doing the challenge and I hope you do more videos on the vegan keto topic.

I looked for recipes online and just plugged everything into Chronometer (I wanted to make sure I was getting enough of nutrients and that I wasn't seeing any red flags. Last thing I wanted was to be deficient in anything.) After a while I was bored and just really wanted a "plan", I got the Vegan Keto book by Liz MacDowell ( www.amazon.com/Vegan-Keto-Liz-MacDowell/dp/1628603143 ) and that helped a lot.
The 2nd month has been a lot easier and just a little more relaxed, I also just use the Keto app to track since it is a little easier with that calculations of net carbs. Let me know if you have any questions, would love to help if I can. #veganketo #veganforlife

Also, I am a competitive powerlifter, so definitely no strength sacrifices there, either. :)
It's definitely possible to be malnourished on a vegan diet, just as it is for any type of diet. (You can eat vegan ben and jerry's for every meal just like you could with regular ice cream..) You just have to be educated and mindful to have a well-balanced diet, but if you know a lot about nutrition, it can be done super easily.

@@jammypantz Right....you and the "banana girl" can go on giggling about how "happy and healthy" you are, as the rest of the world sees what veganism really does to people. It's slow starvation, a diet of death. You may be telling yourself you're doing good in the world by promoting it, but you're not. You're encouraging people to follow an awful diet that will ruin their health.

I was wondering that. BHB will increase when one is restricted enough not only in carbs but in calories and nutrition in general. The body is going into high gear to fuel itself in the restrictive vegan keto diet. It was obvious that DeLauer had burned off all his excess fat. He essentially did a fasting mimicking diet for two weeks. But that would not be a sustainably healthy diet beyond that point.

Thomas DeLauer fair enough, even if you’re not directly promoting; I’m sure plenty of people appreciate your help with noticing that it’s possible👌🏼. Really love your content and scientific approach that’s clearly set out! Keep on the good work and don’t pay attention to the useless haters! You did and looked great!

4:46 Me too. I currently love my vegetarian Ayurvedic food (Pitta Balancing). 😋
Yes, Agree, the Keto Vegan way makes your mind more alert, able to focus because there is less clogging up the digestive system.
Yes, more endurance because the body is more 'clear', less stagnation (that meat/animal products give.)
Starting out of Vegan Keto, the Cook does have a lot of new info to scrabble through for what suits your body type(Prakriti), but like my family, because we had been doing it long term (December 2018 -when we found your channel) we adapted and have less of a problem ,especially as now we don't eat that much in the day, AND have a smaller eating window.
We didn't have loads of Chia, flax, Sun Warrior, No Nutri-yeast, nor Soy (dare not). Instead, big variety (of veg, some lentils, beans, nuts, seeds, herbs, fruits, teas,) )and it did work for us until we saw ailment still peeking through (related to Endocrine system damage from air, water, stress,'fake' food. )
So we have turned our eating window of Vegan-Keto into an Ayurvedic one, which is all the before mentioned with a small amount of Ancient unadulterated grain Emmer. Boy it really gave my mood and lethargy a boost. And no bloating!!!
And that suits my family (three children under 10 years old). 😋
x x x Best Wishes to you and your family.

I am glad to see what your views were after trying it. I have always wondered how you could do it. Now I think I will try it from time to time.
