Intermittent Fasting for Vegetarians and Vegans - Thomas DeLauer
Okay, so the first thing I want to talk about is what the heck is this intermittent fasting thing for you, just the general picture. All it really is is going a period of time without eating and then having a consolidated eating window.
Okay, so that's the cool thing. You can do what you're normally doing with your diet. You're just shifting your time period, so that you have strategic gaps in between meals to allow for maximum fat burning and maximum antioxidant activity of the body and also maximum cellular rejuvenation.
So, an example would be stopping eating at 8:00 PM and not eating again until, say, 1 or 2:00 PM the next day. There's different periods and we'll talk about the different lengths of time that you can fast.
You see, carbohydrates spike what is called leptin. And leptin is good because it stimulates your metabolism. But leptin has to be low if we ever want fat burning to occur, okay. What we're trying to do here is we're trying to make it so that we don't have carbohydrates spiking our leptin, right when we go into a fast. If we keep our leptin a little bit lower right before starting a fast, it means that we're going to tap into our body's fat burning potential earlier in our fast, which means that you're going to have more fat burning period of your fast than you would otherwise.
So, examples if you're a vegan or a vegetarian would be consuming something as simple as tempeh or Hempeh or a pea protein shake with a little bit of coconut oil. You're just keeping the fats high and the carbs low with your last meal before going into a fast.
why is it so important that you fast less frequently? Because we have to be real with ourselves. As a vegan or vegetarian, you know that it is more difficult, okay, not impossible, but more difficult to get the steady supply of nutrients, minerals, vitamins, protein that you need in the first place.
When you're fasting, you're limiting that even more because you're limiting your potential opportunities to eat. Okay, so you've already gone from a semi-restricted state to an even more restricted state. And if you were to fast every day, my fear would be that you would lose a lot of the vital nutrients that you need to sustain healthy bodily function.
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1...
Here's something that very important. While you're fasting, you have a big up regulation of natural antioxidant activity. Right when you break your fast, you have a big surge of oxidative stress, okay. You went from being a really clean slate, clean body to all of a sudden having tons of nutrients bombarding your body, which triggers cellular waste. Consumption equals waste no matter what.
Okay, so this means that all of a sudden, you have oxidative damage. I recommend consuming high antioxidant foods, okay. Mainly because oxidative stress is going to destroy collagen production. And when you're fasting, you already have a collagen sort of deficit. You're breaking down collagen. I want to make sure you're not losing skin health, hair health, and most importantly, joint health.
So, add some antioxidants, right when you break your fast. Even take a couple of thousand milligrams of vitamin C if you'd like. It can help you out a lot.
Additionally, unfortunately, The Journal of Pediatrics proved this in one study, but then there's a lot of studies that also prove it. You're going to be deficient in Omega-3s, okay. Vegans are already deficient in Omega-3s as a rule, and I hate to group you into a category like that, but vegans and vegetarians generally have low levels of Omega-3.
In fact, this study in Journal of Pediatrics found that when they measured human milk that there was 23.8% Omega-6s in a vegan vegetarian's human milk versus 10% in an omnivores. It's not saying that one is better than the other. Okay. But the point is is that your Omega-6 levels are an indicator of how low your Omega-3 levels are. And we need to balance that out so that you can keep inflammation at bay.

    Sum up:
    - IF is good also for vegan
    - Do IF only a 2-3 days a week (since it is hard to maintain nutrient density with that many restrictions - vegan * 16h fast)
    - Do not break a fast with nuts
    - Do not break fast with fats
    - Do not finish eating window with carbs
    - Break a fast with low fiber veggies
    - Consume antioxidant foods (berries)
    - Break a fast with a small meal, and then eat a larger meal after 60-80min
    - Let next meal be also low in fat
    - Let second meal be low with GI
    - Always keep fats and carbs separate

He lost me at “as vegans know it’s harder for them to get nutrients” to me that says he thinks animal flesh is more nutrient dense. Veganism isn’t a diet it’s a lifestyle. Adopt a healthy lifestyle and eating nutrient dense food is super easy. These meat eaters are fasting for diet reasons bc they’re “lifestyle” is killing them.

But also, sometimes it is very hard to find healthy vegan food when you are out of town and not cooking (at least in Serbia), so IF comes good for those moments... Also if you eat more omega6 then omega3, and have some bed skin condition because of that... IF could solve it

Steve Jobs observed a vegan/fruitarian diet and fasting, and died of pancreatic cancer...
Ashton Kutcher followed Steve Jobs' diet regimen for purposes of method acting and was hospitalized because of his pancreas...
Vegans will immediately get defensive about this and tell you it's just coincidence or that "he didn't do it right," but the fact is that the body tries its best to maintain balance and compensates for what you do to it; when you eat a high carbohydrate diet all the time, your fasting insulin level will naturally increase in anticipation for the blood sugar, and on the other hand your fasting insulin levels will naturally decrease if you follow a ketogenic diet or when you intermitting/extended fast.
However, when you fast and then break your fast with all carbohydrates, which is the primary macronutrient in vegan diets whether you're a "fruitarian" or not, your pancreas has tremendous stress because it goes from periods of very little insulin demand to a sudden massive demand, and because it doesn't just turn on and off like a light switch the pancreas has to work extra hard to perform its insulin and enzyme production functions the result of this is damage to the cells of the pancreas, and those damaged cells can become cancerous.
Think of it like working at a restaurant and there are no customers, so the managers send a lot of the kitchen staff and servers home, then suddenly a big bus full of customers shows up all at once and absolutely swamps the remaining crew that are there and they are dramatically understaffed to handle the workload, and with the amount of stress it puts on them and even though they work as hard as possible, they just can't keep up and some people can't handle it and just walk out and quit. This is in essence what happens to the cells of your pancreas.
When you break a fast of any duration, you always want to do it with foods that are very low glycemic, very low insulinogenic foods to minimize the shock to the pancreas, and that's much more difficult to do on a vegan diet than an animal based low carb ketogenic/carnivore diet.

mich jills well here's a little intro to oncology lesson for you because everything you said is untrue:
there are two main types of Pancreatic Cancer, the vast majority are adenocarcinomas, and adenocarcinoma has about a 6 month survival prognosis... if it's diagnosed at stage 4. People diagnosed with early stage pancreatic adenocarcinoma have a 34% shot at living longer than 5 years...
However, Steve Jobs did NOT have adenocarcinoma. He had a much rarer, Neuroendocrine tumor, which is often asymptomatic in early stages, sometimes for years, and has a much higher 5 year survival rate than adenocarcinoma, 55% in early stage and 45% in the later stages... So your assessment is wrong.
Also Steve Jobs died in his home, not in a hospital, not during a surgery or immediately following a surgery.
So literally everything you've said is misinformation you've gotten somewhere by mistake, or it's just a lie. not sure which is the case, and I don't really care, but I'm happy to clarify either way.

I do take issue with your combining the words 'fruitarian/vegan' though. Fruitarian diet is stupid. Vegan diet can quite easily be high protein, low carb too. Plant based eating is not all high carb by any stretch. Even vegan keto is doable. Harder, yes, but doable.

That explains why I get better results when I do IF end of the day instead of during the morning, even though is easier to skip breakfast. When I do IF in the morning I gain weight and it doesn’t do much for me, besides feeling better. But IF in the afternoon and evening is pretty hard for me but I get better results. Awesome video...thank you for sharing. It’s a pity that I did not notice it when you first shared it.

Thank you thank you. I am a type 1 diabetic who has been asked by my medical team to go off the keto because of some of my blood work. It's been a bit of a mind--++ . They are suggesting plant based but no vegan products per say
Your videos help me do my research and this video has totally calmed my mind.
Thank you for talking about fasting we have done it all our lives for the high holidays we love that it is being given the place in our health journeys. Thank you thank you

I really appreciate this video Thomas.. have been watching your videos.. learning alot.. and adapting many of your tips to fit my plant based diet. I'm not at full blown Keto but have reaped the benefits of it's beatitudes along with intermittent fasting (16:8 and 20:4).. I've dropped 40lbs. Thanks again!

Yay Thomas, I was IF vegan for 2.5 yrs and srarted feeling not great when a long stressful period in my life caused me to be vegan food disorganised and kept eating loads if easy carbs, but also i did end up with mild IBS too and food organisation became even harder. I am generally on point and educated etc but life happenscand even the best of us fall off our ideal lifestyle. l felt so unwell so reverted back to pastured eggs a couple times a week and a wild caught salmon fillet or canned sardines once a fortnight and it helped. I followed yoy for education evem when vegan so 2 weeks ago I went keto (while 16:8 IF still) and added a little grassfed butter or ghee daily and graasfed beef fillet once a week. Feel great but would love to go vegan again and keto (for my gut as full vegan wrecks it) Would appreciate and love if you could a vid on a weekly meal plan vegan keto. Thanks, you're info is invaluable in the meat world and now vegan world.

I am a plant-based I-faster, and I love it! this video was pretty good, but I will say that the "concerns" he had because "we already have trouble getting the nutrition that we need" is not the case, as long as you are eating a robust, balanced diet of whole plant based foods. we are just fine! : ) no worries. we are getting everything we need.

I’ll look for other videos though where you mentioned when to workout during fasting days. Thanks again! 😉👍

been doing 22hs fasting lately and as a vegan it's easy to get the nutrition you need tbh. eat whatever you feel is healthy for you, healthy varied meals with good carbs and fats and keep protein high. take your multivitamin supplements. I've been going at it for 25 days and I've managed to lose a lot of fat while actually gaining some muscle and strength working out a few times a week.

Happy you did this video but
    1) Why do you have in mind that the vegans watching this video and doing IF are going to be rather unhealthy vegans that don’t know how to track macro/micros and nutrients and adapt your video in consequence. Meat eaters don’t always know macros/micros either lol.. and a vegan diet often has much more nutrients in forms of antioxidants as vitamins.
    2) What do you have against soy exactly ? You didn’t use any research whatsoever when talking about soy. Plenty of body builders (IFBB pros) are vegan and eat plenty of soy and are perfectly healthy. I’m vegan, my blood tests are perfect, I lift and exercice every morning! And I feel 1000x better and look better since going vegan :)
I watch pretty much all your videos and I’m just curious !

Hi Thomas, thanks for the fasting information, got a guy in the gym that told me about you, you certainly known your stuff and iv watched almost all your videos, I am vegan and have been for 3 years, lost a lot of weight plus inflammation in my colon, I don’t however appreciate your comments on vegans and not being able to fast for long periods, I do, 20-22 hrs and there are many high lean protein and nutritional food alternatives that avoid damaging the planet and murdering innocent animals. You should watch joe rogan pod cast with James wilks from the game changer, you have a lot of people who look up to you and listen so I hope you take this and uplift also the vegan and plant base people by looking into the positives that come from that living. Even ufc rashed evans did a podcast with joe about being vegan and intermittent fasting. Love your videos keep up the good work!!
