How to Heal Faster After Having a Tooth Removed

  • So you just had a tooth removed. The dentist probably rattled off a list of directions for you to follow but was talking way to fast and may have confused you with all the information thrown at you after an anxiety producing experience. I try to avoid the information overload with my patients but it's not always successful.
    Today's video goes into detail about what to do after having a tooth pulled so you can listen again in the comfort of your own home if you are confused. I've also posted the printed directions we give to our patients summarizing the most important things to do to promote faster healing.
    Apply pressure with gauze to stop the bleeding
    After tooth extraction, it’s important for a blood clot to form to stop the bleeding and begin the healing process. That’s why we ask you to bite on a gauze pad for 30-45 minutes after the appointment. If the bleeding or oozing still persists, place another gauze pad and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. You may have to do this several times. If you run out of gauze, you may take a tea bag of any kind and firmly bite down on it for 30 minutes. Pink or blood-tinged saliva may be seen for 2-3 days following the surgery and does not indicate a problem.
    Minimize swelling to minimize discomfort
    Swelling is the body’s normal reaction to surgery and healing. An ice pack or an unopened bag of frozen peas or corn applied to the area will keep swelling to a minimum. Apply the ice to the outside of the face, 20 minutes on and then 20 minutes off, while awake for the first 24 hours. After the first 24 hours, stop using ice and use a warm moist heat compresses to relieve swelling and aid in muscle discomfort. The swelling will begin to decrease after the third day.
    Pain medication
    Unfortunately, it is normal to experience mild to moderate pain after a tooth extraction. Try to take some pain medication before the numbness wears off. Ibuprofen (Advil) or naproxen (Aleve), are both good over the counter medications to take that will also help to minimize swelling. Dr. Kamodia recommends 600mg of ibuprofen (3 tablets) every 6 hours for the first 3 days. If that is not providing enough pain relief, alternating the ibuprofen with extra strength Tylenol (500mg) will help.
    How to promote faster healing
    After the blood clot forms, it is important not to disturb or dislodge the clot as it aids healing. Do NOT smoke, suck on straws, or rinse vigorously for one week. These activities will dislodge or dissolve the clot and retard the healing process. Limit vigorous exercise for the next 24-48 hours as this will increase blood pressure and may cause more bleeding from the extraction site.
    Diet
    Your first day will consist of soft, cool foods such as: yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, cottage cheese, and ice cream. Soup is a great option as long as it is room temperature. Avoid foods like nuts, sunflower seeds, popcorn, chips etc., which may get lodged in the socket. Focus on drinking lots of fluids and eating soft, nutritious foods.
    Long term healing
    The best way to prevent infection and ensure healing is to keep your mouth clean. Clean your mouth thoroughly after each meal beginning the day after surgery by rinsing GENTLY with warm salt water. Use a soft bristle toothbrush and toothpaste every morning and night to keep your teeth and the extraction site clean. This will speed healing and help keep your mouth fresh.
    After a few days you should feel fine and can resume your normal activities. If you have heavy bleeding, severe pain, or swelling that is not decreasing after 3 days please call our office immediately-(607)-785-1900.

    Why don't these dentists, periodontists or who ever extracts the teeth have print-outs of post extraction instructions? Gees that really amazes me that I have to go on CZcams and search the internet to find out what to do...I mean, do they really think we're going to remember oral instructions right after the trauma of having our teeth pulled?? I don't think so!

    I’m currently at the end of my 5th day post op (four impacted wisdoms removed with twilight sedation), and I just wanted to post this comment across a few videos to calm anyone down who may be panicking like I was. Because I was panicking. Never had surgery before and I read and watched every horror story on the internet. I just want to say that I had a good, experienced surgeon perform my extraction and that I dealt with NO unbearable pain, did NOT take any narcotic painkillers, and have been instead alternating ibuprofen and acetaminophen (stopped that today on day 5). The sedation did NOT make me act weird, for those of you who fear that part. The third day was indeed the worst, but completely doable. I would describe it as discomfort at its worst. To me, the whole process has been no different than what it was like to lose teeth as a child, along with a sore and stiff jaw. Hope this helps anyone, because I read so many bad comments and I was completely freaked out the week prior to surgery.

      @anna_in_lux1599 Před 5 lety +5

      Thank you for posting this. People tend to only write comments when they are anxious or had a bad experience. I am very worried since 10 years ago I had a really bad dry socket, though I did not follow any rules at all, the oral surgeon gave me no guidelines at that time. This time I am 8 month pregnant (so no heavy pain killers) and the other lower one is continuously inflamed, so it will have to be removed this week. It is good to hear that it does not necessarily have to be a horrible experience :)

    • @jessicarainesart
      @jessicarainesart Před 5 lety +2

      anna_in_lux sure thing. I’m sorry that happened to you. I’m super glad I have been able to avoid it. Hopefully your next surgeon gives you appropriate instructions...that’s inexcusable that the last did not. I’ve read online that the ones that are infected/hurting are actually easier to deal with post extraction because the pain of healing is less! Mine weren’t bothering me but maybe this will apply to you. Hope everything works out for you!

      Wisdom teeth were useful thousands of years ago when man was made to eat mostly meat and tougher foods. Through evolution our mouths have gotten smaller and thus wisdom teeth are no longer necessary.
      This also explains why most people can not have them fit properly in their mouths. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask me.

    I had a wisdom tooth taken out yesterday. I wasn’t given stitches, gorz, antibiotics or anything by my dentist. He was rather rough and damages the corner of my lips and inside in my gum. I found eating warm food actually made my mouth feel better. But I’m sticking to softer foods- pasta, beans on toast, mince meat, yogurt, jelly noodles. Not too much chewing to do. During the day I can handle the pain I just watch tv/youtube but at night it’s difficult to sleep with the constant ache. I usually love to read but I can’t concentrate right now on my books due to the pain. From today Iv washed my mouth out a couple times with mouth wash. I’ve taken ibuprofen during the day and I took come co-codamol at night but the pain hasn’t completely gone. At one point yesterday I was overcome with a sudden urge of wanting to vom so I had to go outside into the cold air and crouch down for a few mins to feel better. How long (days) will the pain last? And how do I sleep at night with the pain as even pain killers don’t seem to fully get rid of the pain.

      Depending on the "Damage" done to your gum, the pain should be gone by the third day (soreness is normal) BUT you really need to get some antibiotics, extractions get infected easily! Go to your dentist and demand them if you have to! If the pain is still happening after 3-4 days you have a chance you got dry socket, you will have to go check with your dentist to make sure it isn't that.

    Because I got a useful tip in the comment "Have painkillers when you get home from the dentist", to deal with the after pain.
    Here are my tips:
    -Have a bit of coconut oil or melted beeswax and swirl in your mouth gently - oil will coat the sore gum and create a lining to protect from any type of irritants and simultaneously help to heal. In addition, after doing so it will be easier to drink and eat.
    -Also, while drinking and eating you can tilt your head to avoid any contact with the sore area.
    -Eat protein based food such as eggs and fish, to accelerate the healing process.

      No rinsing at all for the first 24 hrs after an extraction. After this 24 hr period then you're supposed to warm salt water gentle rinse 3 - 4 times per day. This is supposed to keep the area clean and promote healing. That's the info I got at my oral surgeon's office.

    Just had a tooth removed almost 2 weeks ago. My jaw ached for days, and I could hardly open my mouth. Luckily time an patience made it bearable, and it's almost completely healed now. First straw I used, did not feel great on my healing mouth. But I had a stitch, so it helped me heal faster. No dry socket issues at all. Used a lot of salt water to bathe the socket. No swishing and No spitting. Just drool it out, after tilting your head back and forth.

When the clot was half the size of my mouth and blood was still dripping I put gauze in again hoping to push it down and ended up destroying the clot and starting the whole process again. Then I found this video. I will try ice now as it is almost 4am in California and I have a clot covering the entire left side of my mouth that has not stopped bleeding for 15 hours now. If you can blend the damn things in a blender.

    Hello,
    Thank you for the information. I had a molar extracted 3 days ago (number 30). I stopped bleeding right away after the extraction and have had no pain and no swelling. I have been rinsing with salt water multiple times per day and brushing/flossing twice a day as I normally do. I have been extra careful not to touch or disrupt the area so it can heal properly, but I have noticed that there is a white, slimy looking, bio film over it. I have been tempted to go in with a wet gauze and pat it clean a little. What do you think about that?
