Definitely a great and entertaining style...
I've been around karate (traditional karate, not sport karate) since a child, and been training for like 6 years now. Im about to get a black belt (which doesnt mean ANYTHING, just to put some context).
Around 6 months ago i really started getting interested in the combat sports type of training (i still practice karate tho) so i went to a thai gym near my house.
crosstraining was pretty easy for me (at least the basics), just had to switch a bit my bladed low stance to a more squared and standing, which wasnt hard, the rest are details.
Most of my partners are just tanks that stand still and take/give damage. Since i come from karate background im used to manage distance and timing (still trying my best to mantain the thai technique). i like trying counters and speedy "break ins".
After watching lots of videos of technical thai i feel im this type of style, since i dont really like trading shots (im not a very skinny guy but im lacking some volume and mass to go berserk) so i use my capacities on moving, creating angles, react/counter on speed, get fast snap high kicks etc.
Sometimes i get frustrated i cannot "stand and tank" or "trade" as heavily as my mates, but i think its way better to develop technique which in the long run will better your overall fighting game than just being a juggernaut, but thats my pov!!!
Main thing is just keeping at it and get better with every training !! Thanks for the content as always Jeff!!

You want to watch muay femur style fighters or people that also transitioned from karate or tkd: check out guys like Ignacio Caplonch, Raymond daniels, Wonderboy, superbon, Saenchai etc
Im doing the opposite of you i train muay thai but love karate techniques and i go Southpaw in a bladed stance (i can fight in both stances cause im left handed) be a hybrid mate.. U just need to learn the weaknesses in everything u do and find a solution.. Also if u can't stand and trade u can still clinch.. Since i worked on my thai clinch a lot im not as scared when people go for the infight.. Hope that helps u good luck

    • @matefx
      @matefx Před rokem +2

      @@SN-ym1sv thanks for the reply!
i know wonderboy from his karate origins and superbon/saenchai since they are thai icons (saenchai skills are just UNBELIEVABLE no matter what martial art/combat sport u come from u just gotta respect that man) but most def gonna check the others out! thanks for sharing names.
back to topic; from my karate training i can also spar in both guards since we usually train both sides (i feel this is an advantage in some cases) but the coach at my thai gym usually tell me to respect my orthodox stance and dont switch much (i differ, it limits feints, counters, etc). on another hand i gotta admit im still newbie for clinch and going into the pocket/infight (as u call it) is still my weaknes, fear the heavy trading and naturally space myself from opponent gaining distance to "restart" the attacks.
gotta improve on those weak points tho, thats the whole point!
Im glad u find karate interesting specially coming from a combat sports background.
Hope ur doing fine man :) !!! pleasure to trade words

@@matefx i love it and the martial artist in me just wants to see the other striking styles too so me personally i enjoy when people from a karate background don't forget their roots when they transition to full contact.. I don't know what karate style u trained in but one of my trainer is a kyokushin black belt and man these dudes can trade too that might also help u.. I have a tip for not annoying your trainer that helped me: u do every drill EXACTLY like he wants it so no snap kicks, we are not switching stances or throw fancy point fight stuff... But when it comes to Sparring i fight exactly like i want but kinda listen to the commands he yells.. And after training talk to your trainer and tell him your ideas.. That helps a lot so the trainer doesn't feel disrespected.. Worked for me on most coaches

Interesting. I came from a JKD group who also learned Muy Thai via Master Chai and Saekson Janjira. With the JKD foundation, I stayed on the outside, moved a lot, tried to hit and make the other guy miss very much like Muy Femur. My good friend and training partner both had had fights on the same card in LA and Kru Vut came up to us after the fight and said he was really impressed with how we fought, like real Muy Thai guys. I didn't really get it back then. But now finding out about the Muy Femur style, I get it. That's essentially how we fought.

What I mean by that is when you are throwing punches and kicks, are you keeping track of the ones that would have done enough damage or considerable damage versus the ones you just throw for fun that really have no effect or reason? I am always curious about success to failure ratios, especially in sparring matches when it comes to high percentage skills and techniques vs lower ones. Thanks!
