  • What is Marvel's Loki really about? To understand that, there's one scene that that perfectly illustrates the deeper question that this story, and our culture, is wrestling with.
Do we deconstruct all of our institutions and stories and burn them to the ground, or do we look to reform them?

I've been writing a story that explores this same question, I've never tthought of watching Loki before but your analysis convinced me to. I didn't think Disney still bothered to make something worth watching. I'm really interested to see what choice our generation will make also, we've seen so many instances where the chaos hasn't been kept at bay in our life time. I could see it going either way

Have you ever read ‘The Machine Stops’?
A creepily prophetic vision of our AI future from ~1915. It’s a quick read available online for free

Great analysis! Team loki! Ftw! But I get where Sylvie is coming from. Also I love that in the end whatever happens it’s going to get deconstructed. And that gets me thinking about Baylan Skoll and your video about what he’s going to bring to the table that would stop the cycle.

Yes the cycles that Baylan Skoll mentioned. I wasn’t sure what he was going to do about it by contacting some ancient power on LOTR like planet

I’m more burn it down but I also recognize that some things are more flammable than others.
I think the problem is how does reform happen. In a world where one man is a trillionaire, is he gonna reinvest that for the greater good? Disperse it somehow? So often the ppl asking or imagining about reform are not in the positions where it’s most needed. The true power brokers, are they asking this question? Or are they more concerned w entrenching or expanding their profiles? How many billionaires know that wealth hoarding is probably harmful to the greater good and are doing something about it?
So there in lies the catch. Reform sounds like the path, but how many ppl or institutions or companies and orgs are actually about rising the tides or even dismantling themselves because they no longer serve or have become corrupt or inept etc.
Historically that power need be wrested from them. So it’s like get what u can out of reform, but the real fight might have to burn it down, and I know that is ugly but it ain’t always pretty
Sorry for such a long ass post damn ha

Very good questions. If Loki and the TVA is a metaphor for western liberal democracy then burning it down could cause a lot of pain and suffering.
Inequality is definitely a problem and so to is political ineffectiveness at the top of our societies due to partisanship, populism and politicisation of the supreme courts. Late stage capitalism also seems to be mutating into something like feudalism with new tech lords ruling the digital economy.
Imagine if the USA dissolved into a low intensity civil war. That would be terrible for American people and bad for the world as the Authoritarian regimes would love to throw their weight around on their smaller neighbours.

    • @basementmadetapes
      @basementmadetapes Před 7 měsíci +1

@@pauljazzman408 I agree it would be bad, and for sure authoritarian governments would take advantage just as US interventionism has interrupted plenty of counties in the their own revolutions.
And I guess the threat of pain and suffering isn’t so convincing since the inequalities u specifically mentioned as well as racism and also, like u said, late stage capitalism are already causing those, and I wonder if the argument for maintaining things or reform is not another kind of neoliberalism that uses what could be worse as a means to ward off fundamental change.
So I’m not trying to argue for bloodlust but, I don’t see a lot of evidence from history where significant socio-economic change wasn’t strong armed into legitimacy

Civilizations collapse too. Our modern world of centralized nation states is built on the military revolution of the 16th and 17th centuries that started the trend of military industrial complexes defining national power. But now a thousand dollar homemade drone can destroy a million dollar tank that depends on an entire military industrial complex for its existence. We may see a wholesale redrawing of maps before the end of the century.

Wow wonderful analysis. I suspect Loki will end in reform given all we know so far so it might be the first post woke/post meaning crisis show ever. I'm here for that!
