Godzilla Minus One is receiving critical and popular praise as one of the best movies of 2023. Still, there's reason to believe that Godzilla Minus One is actually a sequel to another top film of the year- Oppenheimer.
In this video, I'll explain why Godzilla Minus One is the perfect sequel to Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer.

As a Japanese raised in the U.S., I have some deep feeling to see such an historical films born in both countries focusing on Atomic bomb from each end. I feel both titles add up and makes one message for human beings against nuke weopons. For me, these two titles are collaboration of U.S and Japan on a same issue. All things considered its not like Oppy went there himself, I think it just adds to the horror and disgust, that the people who built and chose to drop the bomb are so safely tucked away on the other side of the world while they test run this thing that has power never been seen before.
Makes more sense then how he was the only one concerned that that power is going to run unchecked because of his ambition. While everyone was high on its potential regardless of the blood on their hands.

I mean, technically the events in Oppenheimer had to have happened in the canon of every Godzilla movie ever made since Goji's always affected by the bomb. So, in that regard, Minus One really is a canonical sequel to Oppenheimer. The Oppenheimer movie actually happened before the events in Minus One which is wild to think about.

      @TWDub Před 5 měsíci +7

That's not how "canon" works, dude. "Canon" means the "accepted official collection of works" within a given franchise or IP. Oppenheimer is a film completely unrelated to the Godzilla franchise. Only Godzilla films, comics, video games, etc are "canon" to the franchise. Oppenheimer giving another perspective on the events of the nuclear bombs does not make it canon just because the bombs themselves are an inherent part of Godzilla lore.

The scariest thing is that when Oppenheimer mentioned the chain reaction, he was referring to the idea of humanity's weaponry outpacing what it's capable of surviving.
But the 'chain reaction' was instead, what would lead to Gojira, a being of pure hatred and rage with the power the slaughter mankind, for whom not even death can stop. No matter what happens, no matter what we do, without some kind of intervention from a being of equal power and will, we are doomed beyond all repair.

Nerdstalgic posted a video comparing "Oppenheimer" with Hayao Miyazaki's "The Wind Rises," which tells the story of the Japanese man who designed the Zero fighter plane, another man who's obsession for his goal blinded him to the consequences of his own creation.
So, it's possible there is an interesting narrative line from "The Wind Rises," a studio Ghibli animated film, through Christopher Nolan's historical drama "Oppenheimer" culminating in the allegorical "Godzilla Minus One."

I saw Oppenheimer the first week it was out and I just saw Godzilla -1 and had the same thought that these movies were complementary. Their themes overlap beautifully as mirrors. Just my thoughts: they’re both about the profound consequences of choice. Oppenheimer chose death/destruction and the movie wasn’t just about the making of the atomic bomb - it was profoundly about how it was a mistake and a choice that leads destruction of everything he loves (and destroying life that could be). Oppenheimer watched his life fall apart and his significance fade.
In Godzilla -1, Koichi struggles with his choice for life and it’s about accepting that choice in the face of the horrors he witnessed and loss he went through. Choosing life isn’t a mistake - In the end, his choice to live gave him love and significance.
They are both beautifully done and anti-war films that I highly recommend seeing back-to-back.

  • @Dasaltwarrior

This whole video reminds me of how the leaked Comicon teaser for the 2014 film had the audio of Oppenheimer's monologue playing over it, When it gets to the infamous "I am become death, destroyer of worlds" line, it first plays Godzilla's roar and gives it space before the line itself
I think a fitting fan edit to tie the two films together should be closer to that. Instead of literal visions of Godzilla and his wrath, the tie in should be that that Oppenheimer's visions are punctuated by Minus One's rendition of Godzilla's roar, which is a slight edit of the original 1954 recordings
The roar of the original film is often meant to convey a few things. Anger, pain, sadness, and loss. It is often used to punctuate, or overpower moments of sobering silence. Godzilla Minus One takes those same recordings and mixes them to be the loudest thing in the film in a certain scene (you know the one), demanding attention. You don't get the time to process what happens prior, all you can focus on is the deep,, reverberating, and violent cry of the creature, much like how a bomb does not give you the chance to process what has or will happen, commanding all of your focus on singlular, terrible present
I think having it there would be a perfect representation of Oppenheimer's fears and guilt, and how heavily they clearly weighed on him when you see footage of the man himself

The transition from historical to surreal is a very great idea, especially one which conveys the same message but in a more myth form. An example which comes to mind is Call of Duty World at War, after you finish the singleplayer story through various costly battles of World War 2, you end the historical WW2 segment of the game and it puts you into a destroyed building, with undead German soldiers coming towards you, but weirdly enough it is no scarier than the events you had already played through in the singleplayer, both the zombies and the story missions are horrifying, the only difference is that the story missions were based on reality.

Good vid. Minus One is an Oppenheimer sequel; been saying it since September. One thing to add: while Minus One is more optimistic than Oppenheimer, the ending shows Noriko seemingly infected by Godzilla sickness, or something of the sort, & Big-G himself alive (dead flesh doesn't grow & heal). It shows that while we have our victories, terror & horror are always around the corner. Oppenheimer was good, but Minus One was great. Both were striking horror films (horror being about evil, not "sp00ky"). Godzenheimer, baby!

Does anyone know if J Robert Oppenheimer saw Godzilla?
Like the original came out in 1954 so it's really possible he watched it or at least heard about it.
If so, I wonder how he reacted and what he thought about it.
That the japanese basically made a movie about a fleshly reincarnation of his deadly creation, as a giant, destructive creature.
Id like to know that as much, as Id love to see a movie-Oppenheimer being confronted with Godzilla.

But ABSOLUTELY they are extreme companion films.
Having said that, is Oppenheimer the father of two atomic weapons? One made of steel, the other made of flesh? Those movie would have been a better marketing strategy being promoted together than Barbie.

Heck yes! I was just thinking how incredible it was that both of these movies came out in the same year, in fact I had thought with the Barbenheimer event this summer; I couldn't help but imagine an alternate 2023 summer movie blockbuster line-up and instead it would've been "GODDENHEIMER" or "OPPENZILLA" (mash-up title is w.i.p.) How incredible that would've been to have Godzilla Minus One hyped up as much as Barbie was and it would've gotten the massive attention it deserved but more importantly the reminder of the destruction that Oppenheimer's creation caused (beyond just the 6:50 scene) Anyway, thanks for making this video and glad to know you were thinking this!!

To be fair. I considered this as what Bob Ross said “A Little Happy Accident” where it is very coincidence that Oppenheimer release few months before Godzilla Minus One Release. Both movies set identical time stream so the theme is not very far off. Plus both are talking about nuclear stuff. Oppenheimer talks about the Atomic Bomb while Godzilla Minus One talks about this Atomic Creature. It’s kinda funny when you think about it. We just finished watching Oppenheimer which is a goat movie and then we got another Goat movie like Godzilla Minus One. It felt like we got a quick sequel of Oppenheimer movie.

The way you discuss this I almost have to agree with the title of this video. And it certainly would be great if Christopher Nolan followed up "Oppenheimer" with a Godzilla movie. That probably won't happen but Nolan did such great storytelling with "Oppenheimer", I can just imagine the serious tone that would grace a Godzilla movie under his direction, making it as if it was a true event. If you have a PS4/PS5 you should play "Shadow Of The Colossus". I'd really like to hear your thoughts & discussion after completing it.

I had the lucky of being able to see Oppenheimer when I returned back to the States during the Summer. I currently live in Japan. And since the movie was banned, I had to go see it. Not just for that reason, but for historical observations. I live in Osaka but have lived in Hiroshima for sometime. There is no way I wanted to miss that opportunity. Especially in theaters. I was floored of course. So, when I saw the trailer for Godzilla, I knew it would be the counter perspective. It reminded me of Letters from Iwo Jima. I especially needed to see this because of the rising tensions going on globally.
There is one thing though! I am wondering if there is a difference between the Japanese release and the one overseas. The version I saw didnt have the beach scene with the American soldiers. If im talking about the right movie, then it was a brilliant decision. Because this story is better off told tightly from the Japanese perspective. For example, (without giving too much), there was a scene with some ships that came in clutch. My first reaction was that it must be the American military lol. I loved how that part of my brain got shut down.
    Brilliant

The original black and white Japanese 1954 Godizilla movie was a true Sci-Fi movie.
Real Sci - Fi (whether in paperback books or movies) takes an event or trend that has happened in the real physical world as its launching off point.
It then asks "If this is so - what if this could result from that?
I believe the "background story" was changed due to pressure from the US weapons industry (and its investors) to Hollywood
    1. The Karma of man's horrific weapons creation coming to give just as a horrific payback to humanity in the form of Godzilla - who forces us to look in the mirror because we are the monster - - - -> 2. Oh, these are a bunch of creatures sleeping deep underground for thousands of years that you guys did something to wake up

I am struggling with this science fiction film being a sequel to a historical biopic. Both movies arguably are complimentary in the respect that they both arise from a similar archetypal space. But viewed as sequels, I feel like that diminishes the individual greatness of both films. To me, it would be like having Batman Begins as a sequel to L.A. Confidential.

I see where you’re coming from, but I think the historical context of Godzilla being a direct result of Oppenheimer puts a realistic feeling onto it rather than just a random superhero. The fact that Godzilla at its core is a nuclear bomb and shows how it still affects the people of Japan works very well imo

Oppenheimer and Godzilla-1 are similar but G-1 is meant to represent the devastation of WW2 as a whole, while Oppenheimer is basically just about the atom bombs. G-1 kind of avoided the subject of the atom bombs, except when Godzilla was awakened.
