Loved this! I also own Depression and Other Magic Tricks and that video of her reading Explaining Depression to My Mother is the exact reason why I bought that book. Her emotion during that reading is so powerful! I also own Wild Embers and that is also my favorite poetry book I own. Such power and empowerment in that book. Nikita Gill is such a great poet!
High school ruined poetry for me at first, with all the rules and over analysed pieces. But then when my times got really bad I discovered poets like Amanda Lovelace and I was like....This is incredible. I am frequently writing and reading poetry and it's just so freeing and I feel like I have power for once in my life.
Ugh I love this video so much!! I was super intimidated by poetry at first too. But now it’s definitely a genre I read pretty regularly. Definitely added a couple of these to my TBR!

I’m currently trying reading Rimbaud...and I feel I’ve been thrown into the deep end. I’ve never read poetry before and after this video I’ve started to suspect I began in the wrong end 🧐
Poetry is such a wide genre, it's hard to know what suits you when there's so much to choose from. I realised I'm definitely a modern poetry kind of reader, and it took me a while to find what i really enjoy, now that I have, I'm always discovering new poets to enjoy. The books described are not modern as that refers to the modernist movement of poetry. Those are contemporary.
