I found a love for poetry by listening to this podcast called poetry unbound, where this person with an exquisite voice reads and interprets poems by various authors. I find it’s a relaxing way to sit and think about the poems that were just read and have little help understanding them after.

@@NaliniKluth i mean idk how you teach poetry about ik an issue some of my classmates have with poetry is because they can't connect to it. often times we'll read poems with essentially the same underlying meaning and while they're good meanings it gets tiring to read the fifth poem about the contrast of death and life with no new perspectives offered in the span of a month. maybe if your curriculum allows it try to add more variety
what i like about poetry is that sometimes its more about yourself than the poem. when i come across a rare and particular type of poem and i feel it wash over me like a wave like you said, i often dont really understand what its talking about, i dont 'get' half of the lines etc, but i love these sorts of poems the most because it almost doesnt matter what the poets intentions are, you can learn a lot about yourself by how a poem you dont understand makes you feel. you can learn about whats occupying your subconcious by observing what meaning you attach to ambiguous words and lines. i feel as though poems like this are more like tools that help you understand yourself, they appeal to something much deeper within you than anything your conscious mind can understand. just goes to show, sometimes the poem reads you!

Just a note on translated poetry! Of course it's impossible to translate poetry (or anything) and retain all of the meaning of the source language, but often translation is a really creative art form in itself - meaning can be gained in translation as much as lost. I find the most rewarding way to consider a translation is as a different work altogether with different things to add to a conversation, rather than an imitation that will never do the original justice. Of course read in the source language if possible, but don't be put off reading translations! Often with older poetry you can find multiple translations and compare them which is also super fun and interesting

I have been a poetry fan for over 40 years. I discovered it when I was 12. I have long said that schools teaching poetry are the reason people don't like to read poetry. You do not read a poem thinking about what it means or what devices are used you simply read a poem for how it makes you feel.

What I've found really useful when reading poetry - if you can afford it / get them from a library - is to read the book and listen to the audiobook at the same time. You then get a real feel for it. Especially if the poet themselves reads it. Plus CZcams has a lot of poets reading their own work.

May Sarton said that a poem captures a moment of violent change, but only a moment, while a novel is about growth and change. I like that a lot, and feel like it's certainly true for a large amount of the poetry I've read. I was a little worried when I saw the thumbnail with T.S. Eliot's name because I thought you might recommend his poetry to beginners-that can be a disaster imo. I'm glad you suggested his essays. Love your content!

I relate to how you said the way poetry was taught in school wasn't super helpful when it comes to consuming poetry outside a school setting. I feel like every poetry unit I had in high school existed exclusively to look at figurative language and nothing else. I've been trying to get more into poetry over the last few months. Not defending the way schools teach poetry, but as someone is in studying to become a highschool English teacher who just so happens to have a passion for poetry, what we are meant to teach pretty much depends on the curriculum, or at least it is in Australia where I'm from. I agree that schools tend to look at mainly figurative language, but I also think we shouldn't dismiss it because it is quite an important part to poetry. I'm already conflicted because I know I'll have to teach what the curriculum says but at the same time I don't want kids hating poetry because of it, and I want to teach the reasons why poetry is such a great artform. I'm so sorry that your high school didn't give you the positive poetry experience you deserved

I found your channel like a month ago and I have to say every video it's like a new and exciting territory, not only of information, but to ask myself what I'm doing with either my own channel and my life as a reader.
I'm already 40 and I start reading for pleasure like 6 years ago. The way I found book to read its usually by Booktube and, for some reason, I didn't read books from my own Island or any Latin literature.
I've been looking for a way to share all this in your channel, but I was worry to be a long comment... To late. Anyway, I've been rethinking my approach to literature and a better way to share better content in my own channel because it's been changing topics since the first video, hahaha.

I read The Poet X and for some reason, the way it was written just added more depth to the narrative. Then, I started reading a few excerpts of poetry and it started to touch me in a way that it didn’t in school! This video is helpful because, since then, I got more interested. Also, for some reason, poetry in English speaks more deeply than in Portuguese (my first language). Thank you!
This is great! Regarding poetry in a foreign language, I like your idea of pronouncing words even if you don't understand them. Or, I also like to listen to the poem being read in the original language. The bonus, of course, is if the reader is also the author of the poem.

I have always been afraid of poetry, but what Elizabeth Gilbert told you makes a lot of sense to me.
I read „Grief is the thing with feathers“ last year and although I cant say I got every verse and all the symbolisms, I absolutely loved it.
Sometimes I didn’t know what was going on, but it transmitted a lot of emotions, I even ugly cried. After it „passed“ it did feel like a wave had hit me.
Ps. I thought the poetry reading was super sweet.
In 8th grade, I had an awesome English teacher who was able to get our whole class loving poetry. A gift for a lifetime.

I really understood poetry when i started reading mayakovsky in high school way before he was taught. I started reading out loud but in my head and it made so much more sense suddenly. He has very strong rhythm to his poetry and in russian it sounds like a proper storm sometimes. Without need to analyse anything for school i enjoyed it a lot and ended up memorising some poems just for the heck of it

I only started loving poetry after I read poems by one of my favourite ever poets called 'Lieke Marsman'. Something about the rawness + beauty of her words inspired my to start writing myself, both in Dutch and in English and it helped me process what was going on around and inside me. I haven't been inspired lately, which sucks and makes me feel terrible, but the stress of school is overpowering haha. I'm going to try and set some time aside this summer to envelop myself in the world of words again because it truly tugs at my heartstrings in the most comfortingly sentimental way

On the point of reading poetry in other languages, Neruda's anthology is a good one. He translated his own poems from Spanish to English so there is no ambiguity in the translation. You can read the poems side by side and be jealous at how someone could be so talented at writing in two languages

You are spot on with reading poetry out loud and emphasizing certain words or sections. It can completely change what I take away from it. I fist learned this listening to the classic, “ Road not taken” by Robert Frost, read by himself. Hearing it read by him made the poem so much more moving. You can hear the wisdom and acceptance of the words.
