- This delicious classic recipe for homemade Maryland style crab cakes is the perfect appetizer to serve up to your guests.
Crab cakes are a combination of lump crab mixed with spices, eggs, mayonnaise, and breadcrumbs that are then formed into balls and deep fried. They are most often served as an appetizer, and you’ll even see them as a sandwich.
Ingredients for this recipe:
For the Crab Cakes:
• 1 pound jumbo lump crab
• 1 large egg
• 1 ½ teaspoons old bay seasoning
• 1 ½ teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
• 1/3 cup mayonnaise
• 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
• 1 tablespoon finely minced parsley
• 1 cup buttered cracker breadcrumbs
• ¼ cup oil
For the Optional Sauce:
• 1 cup bechamel sauce
• 2 teaspoons yellow mustard
• 2 teaspoons whole grain mustard
Serves 6
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 8 minutes
Procedures:
1. Crab Cakes: Gently combine the crab, egg, old bay, Worcestershire, mayonnaise, Dijon, and 2/3 cup cracker crumbs until thoroughly mixed.
2. Form the mixture into 6 crab cakes by rolling into tight balls and gently pressing down to flatten.
3. Coat each crab cake in the remaining 1/3 cup of unused cracker crumbs and then place them on a plate or a cookie sheet tray lined with parchment paper.
4. Pour the oil into a large frying pan over medium heat.
5. Once the oil is hot, add in the crab cakes and cook for 3-4 minutes per side or until golden brown and cooked through.
6. Set aside to drain on a rack or paper towels.
7. For the Sauce: Heat the bechamel in a sauté pan until hot and whisk in the mustards until combined.
8. Serve the sauce alongside of the cooked crab cakes and garnish the crab cakes optionally with chopped parsley.
Chef Notes:
Make-Ahead: Crab cakes are meant to be eaten as soon as they are cooked. If you have to you can make them up to 1 hour ahead of time and keep them warm in the oven on a sheet tray with a rack at 225°.
How to Reheat: Place the crab cake in a pan and place them in the oven at 350° for 3-4 minutes or until hot. You can also heat in the microwave until hot.
How to Store: Cover and keep in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Cover and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw in the refrigerator for 1 day before reheating.
To keep the crab cake from falling apart it is imperative there is enough mayonnaise and an egg that is thoroughly mixed in. It is also important to compact the crab cake well with your hands when forming them.
Crab cakes are most often eaten with a sauce or with greens.
The flavor is better if you fry the crab cakes, but you can bake them on a cookie sheet tray lined with parchment paper at 375° F for 13-18 minutes. - Jak na to + styl
Amen on the Duke's Mayo brother. I was raised in SC and NC and its the best ever
Love your no nonsense recipes, Chef. God bless you and your family always😊
I made these crab cakes the other day and they are the best. Simple yet extraordinary
Thank you for this! I used to go down to Newport News years ago and there was a small restaurant there, I think the owner was actually Greek, but he made the most amazing Crab Cakes I've ever had. For years I tried to duplicate the recipe but was never successful. Even your complimentary sauce is fantastic! I can't wait to try this one. Thanks again!
Making this delicious recipe tomorrow night, I can't wait!!

Just found you and wow these look amazing! I also love crab cakes! Been wanting to eat some crab cakes and now I found your great recipe thx!
I use to hate crab, not snow crab I love them . On a recent trip to Orlando we ate at “ Eddie Vs” yes I’ll give them a plug it was the best food I’ve ever ate and at 64 I’ve ate a lot. Now back to the crab cakes now on the menu was a big crab cake for 2 my wife says I want that for the appetizer Ooo Ok it was so good. Now I am looking for ways to make it at home and here is your channel and a easy to follow recipe. I have everything except the Old Bay seasoning. Thanks for showing this.
gonna try tomorrow
Looks like a great recipe
That a beautiful crab cake. That what u call beautiful
Thank you, friend
beautiful watch!
If you buy jumbo lump crab, it does matter how you mix in the wet/spice/herb/breadcrumb mixture.
Mix the mayo etc in a separate bowl so you can fold it into the crab and that way you retain most of the lumps.
You have to fold the jumbo lump crab meat in last very gently to keep those beautiful lumps in the crab cake. That's what make the crab cake so beautiful looking!!!
They look great ! I serve mine with sour cream, a little tomato paste, creole seasoning, and a little jalapeño sauce! I’ve used this sauce for all fried food! Great video!
Amazing
Yum
I've been craving crap cakes! I can't wait to try your recipe! 😋

Howdy from Texas 🤠these look absolutely delicious as your recipes always do. Thanks for sharing.
please tell me you've tried them as a burger. I have and it makes me feel like I'm on a different level
toasted n' buttered buns with graded mozzarella cheese melted on top. It's a sensation
I've been looking for a recipe with just a small amount of filler in it. We've dropped our own crab traps forever now. We'd get about 2-3 dozen at a time. We always had way too much & gave it away to our neighbors. I only liked fresh hot crabs with butter and crab boil. My husband wants me to make crab cakes. I can finally say sure! Thanks
Look up martha stewarts recipe, but do not use green/bell pepper or bread crumbs, just use egg white to bind your crab.
I'm from Southern Md and I'm living in Upstate NY...I miss MD
You’re killin me...I’m gonna hop on my bike and go down to my local marina for some crab and make these! YUM! 🦀☘️
thank you for making this easy I'm A competition BBQr trying to expand on what I know
And I’m always trying to learn more about bbq
@@ChefBillyParisi I made your recipe and of course I fired up my Kamado doing half at 350 on smoker and other half going to pan fry if your interested will give results
We're the link to bechmeal sauce how is it made
What side would you suggest to make along side the crabcakes?
Wedding Crashers!😀
We use right out of the crab trap :)
Man you taught me how to make fresh pasta hahah only right
Thank you! Sad that is what is considered LUMP crab these days🙄 And I guess no surprise since Alaska is canceling the King/Snow Crab session for 2022🤣🤣
Have done these a couple of times they are the easiest thing to cook that sounds complicated when you hear ability them
As a Marylander, thank you for not adding peppers or onions even though you mentioned adding additional things. I cringe when I watch videos with green peppers added. The way you make them is the way we Marylanders make them. Only spice to use is Old Bay.
As a Marylander… thanks. I’m honestly not even going to look at any other comments because it is going annoy me…
I was going to add onions but now because of this comment I wintn
@@Ramen7810 we never add that extra nonsense in our crabcakes here. You have to go to Delaware for "Maryland " crab cakes with that crap lol.
They look great! However I wouldn't say "now I'm going to show you a very simple sauce" But first you have to have some leftover bechamel sauce... lol
Can't find the old bay😮😮😮
What could I use to substitute the mayo? I need to make these asap 😅
Use yoghurt, either full fat or low fat.
If you can eat mayo, but can't buy it, you can always make your own! But if you can't eat mayo, I'd suggest yogurt or you could leave it out. The mayo is there to add a bit of extra creaminess and moisture, but also to help it stick -- so just be sure that if you leave the mayo out, you bake or broil the cakes instead of frying them.
EDIT: I just thought of another option, but it's really decadent: I've seen crab cakes held together with a fine puree of shrimp, mixed in with the bread crumbs, spices, etc. It's absolutely fantastic, so you could try that as well. I'd say maybe a quarter pound finely pureed would do it. Just fold the puree into the mixture, form the cakes, chill them very well, and you're good to go!
Just eat the crab with a little lemon. You can’t substitute anything for the mayo. Because then you don’t have real authentic crab cakes.
You can use creamed corn as a substitute or plain Greek yogurt.
Clutch brought me here
How do you make béchamel
Put it in search bar. It’s like a white sauce.
He's got a video on how to make it. It's a milk sauce that's thickened with a roux (equal parts of butter and flour cooked together), a pinch of nutmeg, and some salt/pepper. A *very* easy sauce to make!
You forgot the dash of worchestershire.

As a Marylander, you got the recipe right but DO NOT add it back into the breadcrumbs after you form a patty. Jumbo lump is where its at
I was born and bred in Maryland. I've seen it both ways. I think people should do what they want!
@@SuzanneBaruch you are land locked Maryland then hon.
@@Omnaecyde I think what you're trying to say is that you think I haven't spent any time near the Bay or the ocean? Wrong on both counts, hon. Bless your heart.

Crab cakes vs md crab cakes,
Pple these are not even remotely md crab cakes....
Dont believe me go check out
munchies, this lady who is a Marylander makes md Crabcakes.
Rule #1 never mix the way he mix, Crabcakes are gently mixed.
Dont mean no disrespect sir, it was not my intention......
Location counts, too, when it comes to crabmeat. If you can get blue crab fresh or pastuerized form U.S. that's the best.
Crab legs? No. Fresh jumbo lump from U.S. waters is the ultimate upgrade.
Ugh, and don't mash the stuff together with your fist. Fold the ingredients in.
No peppers or celery.
Awesome!…. But cooking mayonnaise?…. Yuck!…. 😘
As a 48-year resident of Maryland, I wept at his approach. Not Maryland crab cakes!
Dude that is not JUMBO lump crab meat
I am a Marylander and I know crab meat
Call me a purist, but the only way to eat crab cakes is with lump crab meat.
Maryland Maryland 😅😅😅😅 y’all say if your from Maryland how ever you make it is Maryland. Stop playing Maryland people. It’s only a recipe y’all going to far.
Noooooo. Authentic MD crab cakes never, ever use leg meat! Jumbo lump blue crab only, no Dijon. No "other" crab substitute. Beaten egg, white bread risked in milk etc. Google the best crab cakes to buy IN Maryland, spend the money to have them shipped to you, cook as directed. They will cost $$ but worth the experience.
I was teether on crab legs, really. Crab leg meat has a better flavor to me, use what you can afford.
Omg I was cringing 😬 watching me butchering it I was routing for me this is indeed a crab cake obviously 🙄 but not Maryland style no disrespect to this guy at all in Maryland we never will make a crab cake like this
Welp, we found the narcissist......🤡
Oh well, the CZcams screening experts are always ready to do an unsolicited critique! WHY do people watch videos of what they are supposedly already experts of? 😝
@@trailerparkcryptoking5213 They’re are usually pretty easy to spot..always vocal and out front, huh?
Its not even lump meat and no one from MD puts any bread crumb cracker or panko BS in their crabs cake. Cooking is all wrong. Go to g&m crab cakes then you will see what he should be talking about. Relish, remulade wtf u will never see that in an authentic MD crab house, this boy should learn what he is talking about
Maybe you should make your own video since you’re such a world renowned chef.
@@bobfryfish my crab cakes are better than these. If you are going to act like your from MD get it right you wont find anything like this recipe in any traditional Balto or Annapolis crab house
This is a travesty. 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮💩🚽
@@sjd7188 okay so send the recipe
