    Friends of mine had a cake tasting platter rather than a big, traditional style offering and it was great. It covered all sorts of options and meant it actually got eaten, while still providing an impressive centrepiece to the meal

    4 seasons cake!:
    spring = lemon drizzle 🍋
    summer = victoria sponge 🍓
    autumn = carrot cake or coffee cake 🥕
    winter - fruit cake or chocolate cake 🍫

    Hi Grace! Long time viewer, first time commenter.
    I got married last year, and had the same concern that guests wouldn't eat the cake. We ended up going for a small centrepiece Victoria sponge with several flavours of cupcake and the guests devoured them within minutes of cutting the cake, because cupcakes are easier to just grab and eat - people feel weird about cutting and eating a slice of a bigger cake.
    My husband and I are both vegan and had a fully vegan wedding but even that didn't put our 100 guests off eating the cupcakes.
    Can't wait to see more wedding planning, it really is the most exciting time of your life 💗

    I married way way back in 1985 - I had three tiers and a fantastic local baker. She was amazing and was recommended from friends. Bottom tier was fruit cake, second tier was Victoria sponge and the top tier was carrot cake (my favourite, even back then) Complete with flower decorations and cake pillars matching my 'wedding theme' - A perfect wedding cake was for made for me... I did it way before the internet and you can too.

    Grace I love these videos so much! If I may, I'd like to offer a thought on your super generous and kind expectations of your wedding day (that other people enjoy it); this day is all about YOU and your soon-to-be husband, not anyone else. This is your day with him. It's so lovely that you want to make others happy but please allow yourself to be at least a bit "selfish". You deserve to have the day of your dreams.

    Hi Grace! I baked my friend's wedding cake. It was 4 tiers (2 Victoria sponge, a lemon and poppyseed and a chocolate at the bottom). The chocolate cake was the chocolate wedding cake recipe on BBC good food. It is the BEST chocolate cake I've ever made and I had absolutely everyone at the wedding telling me how much they loved it. I recommend trying the recipe.

    Me and my lovely husband got married in November, and there is still wedding cake in the freezer! Our issue was the venue handing out tiny slivers of cake. Make sure you specifically tell them to give out generous portions. Also have the most amazing day, it's honestly awesome ❤️

      My brother and SIL had a similar problem with the cake - they asked the venue to serve out all the cake for guests to eat during the reception/fill their own boxes to take home but for some reason they decide to keep half of it back - not great as they were going on their honeymoon a couple of days after the ceremony and it was not freezable.

    Totally agree about the styrofoam nonsense! My mom was a wedding planner and told me that some bakers do that. I was shocked 😳 and disappointed honestly! I’m a pastry cook and every wedding cake I’ve made has been 100% edible. My latest was supposedly all eaten! I think people appreciate cakes more nowadays since they’re usually a higher quality

    I made a war time chocolate biscuit/fridge cake for a 1940s party. Queen Elizabeth was such a fan, she apparently had it every afternoon. Her love for the cake evidently passed onto Prince William who had it as a “grooms cake”.

  • @Kaspleen
    @Kaspleen Před rokem +5

    I know a couple who actually had a variety of cakes, from cupcakes to French fancies, Swiss roles, cookies and fruit as their weeding reception food. They had juice and shloer too. It worked really well from them. I always thought that the top tier of the wedding cake was actually kept by the bride and groom/ frozen and eaten on their first anniversary. I think it had some symbolic meaning

    Food for though (pun intended): We had eight different cakes at our wedding, mostly homemade, nothing fancy. It was a really fun touch, and there was something for everyone! I can't even remember all the flavours anymore, but I know we had a "naked" white cake with strawberry filling (I don't like icing so this was first pick), a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting (spouse's favourite), and a lemon blueberry cake with goat cheese frosting (a wildcard pick that ended up being AMAZING - my aunt made it!).
    We also had a milk and cookies bar as the favours for our guests.

    Yay wedding content...not surprised you started with wedding cake. At my friend's wedding the cake had some sort of issue because the fondant (eww) wouldn't stay on the cake and when it was cut it just rolled up. My friend was mortified but now it's a funny story she likes to tell. That is one thing that I've learned over years of going to weddings, it often the little oops that make the wedding stand out!

    We had a very small traditional looking cake, and besides that we asked some people who we know love to bake to bake something to bring to the wedding (instead of a gift). We ended up with brownies, cupcakes etc. and everyone loved it! We were broke when we got married 4 years ago so we had to keep it simple and we were so thankful that people were willing to bake something :)

    Hi Grace! So I worked weddings for a big chunk of my very short life. And in doing so I got to eat a LOT of wedding cake. Due to the nature of a chocolate cake as you surely know from your studies to become a baker you will know chocolate cakes can tend to become a little dry. And I can say all the chocolate cakes I had were dry or very dry. Whilst I wouldn't say that's a reason to just not have a chocolate wedding cake I would say it's something to bear in mind. The absolute best wedding cake I had was a lemon and blueberry sponge with cream cheese icing. And I think I might have had 5 or 6 slices as the bride and groom kept offering us more cake and I absolutely could not say no it was the best cake I've ever had nevermind wedding cake. Personally I'll be doing a lemon and blueberry and perhaps a chocolate fudge/red velvet as my partner isn't a fan of fruit. We also had a lemon poppy seed cake at work one day and they just stay so moist and lovely, so I definitely recommend lemon cakes for a wedding.

    • @Rose-jz6sx
      @Rose-jz6sx Před rokem

      As well as this, you've already eaten a multi course meal at a wedding so when it comes to cake time you don't want something super dense. Lemon cake is nice a fresh tasting option in my opinion.

    As a former wedding planner, I think a big contributing factor to people not eating the cake is it has moved to be served in the evening buffet- and people can often realise it’s not there or be a bit tiddly to want to consume it! My advice would be to do the cake cut just after your wedding breakfast, serve some then and then you can also put some out in the evening if you’re having separate evening guests! Also can be nice to have little boxes near by so guests can always take some with them

    In Italy we call “salame al cioccolato”-> chocolate sausage the first cake ( the one with chocolate and biscuits )
    P.s usually it has a different shape like a sausage and not a real cake

      Interesting, here in Germany we call it a "cold dog" 😂

    If you hate greasing and lining tins, buy reusable greaseproof paper, cut to size of your tins, and wash between use. I have found it doesn't need greasing so I can just pop it in and go.
    (also my husband does the washing up

    My MIL paid for our wedding cake, which meant we somehow needed up with 3 layers of fruit cake. Neither my husband or I like fruit cake 🙈 I think this was her way of keeping a bit of tradition in a very untraditional wedding - although I did too it with white chocolate skulls! We also had a GIANT cheese wedding cake which was a great hit

    My wedding cake was styrofoam for top two tiers but purely because we had 3 of the bottom tiers made so there was more cake if that makes sense? We had 3 different flavours, hand crafted flowers and they even hand crafted figures of ourselves, our son and our labradors 😂 however, I can’t tell you what it tastes like! I didn’t have any 🙈🙈

    We had a lemon & elderflower "signature" punch at our wedding which was a big hit. I noticed the cake had wattle on it which I haven't ever seen before and I'm Australian! Our wedding cake was caramel & vanilla fudge which was so delicous and we had a top layer of fruit cake (my husband and I both like it) which we kept and ate a slice every anniversary .. except it met a fatal end after a power shortage while we were away and the freezer didn't start back up.

    Love this content ❤️ we had a Fiona cairns wedding cake, from Waitrose! Three tier of Victoria sponge and decorated with lovely pink roses and fake flowers & ivy on the top. Quite vintage looking. We then had a fruit cake cutting bar for the traditionalists. Our venue kept aside the top tier for us to enjoy and served the rest to guests.
    Absolute respect to Waitrose, the cake was delivered to our venue and it was leaning to one side! We wrote to them and explained what happened and they apologised unreservedly saying such a thing shouldn't happen on such a special day. They refunded us the price of the cake plus £50 for the inconvenience!

    You should order from celebrity cake makers and try their cakes!

    My brother let me go cake tasting with him and his then fiance as we chose the flavours, as I have allergies it was tricky - They went dummy, chocolate, lemon drizzle, and carrot cake. Cannot remember where in London that was.
    I went to a wedding last year here in Edinburgh, which they stuffed us, including the cake. As the bride and I both have allergies, they made a layer that was dairy and gluten free (carrot cake), which was fab. They also had a tree of donuts as the groom adores them.

    The fridge cake recipe is pretty much the same recipe that is the "traditional" fridge cake recipe here in NZ!
