    Your thoughts on each Country you visit is great, the plus and the minus, very informative indeed.

      We wish we'd had information like this before we'd visited some of these rarer destinations for cruisers, so we're glad we can help those that may follow in our wake!

    Pity you missed Bazaruto island. It’s really a beautiful group of islands. Also great scuba diving and a huge sand dune to climb up and view 360 degrees

    Thank you for all the information about Madagascar. Your blog was excellent. Now as for differences in language, I'm saprised that you don't have an interpreter application on your phone. You should check them out.

      We do use Google Translate, but there are a few issues with it. It requires a internet connection to use (for the voice to translate feature - typing can be done offline but takes forever), and both people have to understand how to use it. Lots of these remote places haven't used technology like that before. Plus, some of the translations we've seen haven't been any more clear than the original language! haha

    Thanks again for all of these vlogs and blog posts. They are an excellent travel planning resource for both cruisers and land-based tourists. Any additional info on what marine industry services and facilities are available?

      There's really not much. The yacht club in Crater Bay has a few parts (new and used) for sale and you can tie up to their dock to get water, but that is about it. This is another one of those places that you'd probably better bring whatever spare parts you need with you because it's going to be a massive challenge trying to get work done while you're there.

    Question? So Jimmy spent the whole day with you for $20.00? Seems like he gets taken advantage of daily 🥺

    • @OutChasingStars
      @OutChasingStars  Před 4 lety +1

      This is always a very tough issue for us. As we mentioned, Madagascar is an incredibly poor country. We looked it up and found an article that says the average YEARLY income for Madagascar is $440 USD.
      $20USD is the price that Jimmy asked for. Other cruisers negotiated with him on that rate, but that wasn't something we felt comfortable doing. There's no easy answers and it's situations like this that really drive home how lucky we are to come from a place of such privilege.

      Out Chasing Stars Perhaps when we start acting with integrity this won’t be an issue. I would have paid him a first world rate regardless of what he asked for or what cruisers pay simply because that’s what he asked for. My husband and I have loved watching your journey and it has inspired us immensely but we were really.., don’t want to really say what I want to say because were not mean or rude but you contribute to his income problem when you take advantage of people. Imagine you had paid him what most of us “privileged” as you put it got paid would have done to enhance his life and worth??? Sorry but there is no justification in exploiting people no matter how you sum it up. Little disheartened by this and your it is what it is attitude because that’s how we as humans use and exploit the weak! You could have stepped up your game and set a good standard and showed him that he is worth more than $20 bucks for a day! Just my feelings on this. Guess your comfort level and mine are quite different 😔

      @@SailingTeez I hear your point. I am from South Africa and would like to offer a different perspective. It is critically important to respect local rates (you can always tip, food etc). These services are usually as a result of inefficient local bureaucracy and other local conditions. Guides or fixers are generally a useful 'extra' unlicenced/informal services that requires a lot of natural charm and general integrity to land clients. They ensure that arears that would not be otherwise conducive to lots of tourism are navigable/more inviting thus sustaining that local economy. Once you pay 'international rates' to someone, other factors come into play. You attract a different class of guide, corruption, maybe even organized crime etc. What can seem like a kindness initially can actually cost livelihoods, lives and destroy what little has been build. $20 might not seem like much but its more than twice the daily rate for a 12 hour day of labour even here in South Africa.
