  • I’ve been studying hares on the Yorkshire Wolds for years and I saw something near my studio that I’ve never seen before. A baby hare, known as a leveret, had just been born in my back garden.

    ABOUT THIS FILM
    ____________________
    Hares - Lepus Europeas
In the US, Hares are the same species as Jackrabbits. The latin name for this one is Lepus europaeus.
    Fascinated by hares
I was just walking along this path in the wood and just here I saw a female hare lolloping away and I looked down to see where she has come from and there were two little, tiny baby leverets here. Leveret is the name for a baby hare.
    Baby hares are leverets
They were some of the youngest leverets that I had ever seen. Only a day or so old.
Female hares leave their young during the daytime to go foraging, and only return briefly to feed them at night.
So, I wasted no time and set up cameras straight away to reveal the secret world of the hare.
Hares feed their young once a day, at night
As dusk falls, the leverets creep out of the undergrowth. The mother arrives at the front gate, then scampers up towards the woodland…and my hidden cameras capture every moment. She gives them a quick clean and then tries to cover them up as best she can, before leaving them.
    One goes missing
I am keeping a close eye on them, and one night I realise that one of the young leverets is missing. Usually, the mother stays only long enough to feed the babies, but this night she searches for nearly an hour. But there is no sign... it’s gone. Now only one remains.
    One remains and grows fast
But the lone leveret does well. It is a stunning little thing, I’m amazed how much it’s grown in a week as well and this is its defense against predators, just laying here all day, still, quiet, not moving.
Over the next few weeks, I continue filming the mother and her lone baby. The young leveret is brave enough now to leave the woodland….
Leveret needs to be aware of predators
But it can be dangerous out here, as weasels, stoats, badgers, owls, and cats are its enemies. One day we see the leveret being chased by a stoat. They twist and tumble and the little leveret manages to fight free. Thankfully, the mother arrives just in time to chase the stoat off.
There are more dangers after dark. A tawny owl also spies the young leveret roaming around and makes a grab for it. Luckily, mum comes to the rescue again.
    Becoming more confident
Soon, the confident little leveret now explores the whole garden and meets its hare mum for a feed in my car park at night. The leveret uses the cars as shelter and it’s hiding under the car just next to the wheel.
The female hare has just come in and she’s greeting the leveret and starting to feed it right in front of me this in incredible, I’ve waited years to see this!
Finally, I have got intimate shots of a hare feeding a leveret right out in the open its absolutely magical to see.
In around six months this leveret will be fully grown, and ready to start its own family, hopefully right here in my back garden on the Yorkshire Wolds.

How lovely. We had a little baby leveret for 7 weeks whilst on Crete: we saw her hopping forlornly by the roadside, a tiny little thing, and didn't think she could survive out there alone, so scooped her up in my father's hat and took her home. Sure enough, 30 seconds later we passed a large dog padding down the mountain-side in the direction. We had lovely Mopsy for 7 weeks, allowing her freedom to roam the bottom floor of the house, with little nests of Hay in her favourite spots which she tended to rotate around during the day. She used to do binkies on my mother's bed all night long and followed my mother around the house like a little dog! We had hoped to send her to a wildlife charity for rewilding although I don't think we could have honestly done it as we loved her too much and she was a member of the family. Unfortunately she must have accidentally slipped out one day when my Mother held the door open. We didn't see it happen, and Mopsy had showed no interest in going outside previously. Perhaps the time was right, but there's not a day that goes by where I don't think about my little baby hare. She left a hare-shaped hole in my heart on the Cretan mountainside and I will never forget her. I'm hoping to put together a little commemorative page for her as we took so many videos, but it is still a bit painful.

The big difference between rabbits and hare is already occurring by birth when you witness rabbits been born they are helpless and blind and when young hares are born they are fully evolved they have their fur is already fully insulating them, and they are alert and can already run quite fast if necessary nature's diversity is so fascinating and beautiful it really keep surprising me and to mister Fuller thak you very much for this nice video and your deep insight into their life

I never knew that hares leave their young for so long , and feed them once a day. It is a wonder the species survives, with the high chances of getting eaten

Sat the other day giving my elderly dog a rest & a line of 4 hares went running past a field gate. I looked over the wall to see them chasing each other , having a rare old time. Love hares. Lots of them around in the fields of my Yorkshire village. Great footage !

I've been raising an orphan leveret for the past 2 weeks from the day he was 1-2 days old. He's an amazing creature. I have 3 bunnies but this little guy is more loving and has more spunk than all 3 combined. EDIT: the bun has congenital hernia. he's been disabled and scheduled for surgery this month so unreleasable :(

This reminds me of Australia's Emus. They look harmless but do not mess with them. Also, this is like our Rabbits, US. (Jackrabbits)
5:18 I felt that, I do. Long story. It takes years to get gaming down. I join the Gaming Veterans just in time before the time closes out. A young one but when I talk about games they say that's old... wait you're a vet! They start asking me questions😭 My heart. I know the answers or can find them. They say how?! I say, "That's had no pamphlets in a long time. Internet Archive weasel."We talk like that, it's in good fun. They insult me too❤️ It's love XD

Jackrabbits are hares. All true hares belong to the genus Lepus. All true hares have young that are born furry and with their eyes open. Jackrabbits are in the genus Lepus and have young born with fur and vision.
