The Elephants Arrive Back at the Homestead While Phabeni is Out in the Garden 🐘

- The herd arrive back at the homestead at sunset while Phabeni is out in the garden. Because the wind is strong and can alarm the elephants while sending the scent of Phabeni to them, Adine decides to rather take Phabeni back inside to the nursery. We would prefer the introductions, even at the fence, be stress-free, gentle, calming and friendly.
When Phabeni first arrived, the herd didn’t react or show signs of acknowledging the new arrival at the orphanage but on the second day, the young group of females went to the fence and smelled the calf next door. Tigere took a lovely video of this which we shared on CZcams previously. Khanyisa was the sweetest as she joined in, and was perhaps one of the first to realise that there was a new arrival. It is by all means her first home and who will know the place better than her?
Tokwe or Limpopo would for the next couple of days bring their food to the gate and eat there. They seldom did it together but one of them would come. In return Phabeni rumbled quite a bit and definitely seemed to be aware of the herd. They didn’t appear to communicate back - not that we could hear, but likely the seismic communication wasn’t picked up by us as humans.
When I watch these videos, I am so grateful to everyone who contributed in any way to this orphanage’s work. Your donation of time, expertise, funds and hearts have enriched the world. You are all heroes. Thank you.
These videos are both fascinating and so touching. I'm in awe of the wisdom and hands on expertise at HERD. And you are right about everyone who chips in to bring support.
These little elephants will outlive me, but what a joyful privilege it's been to see them safe and well. 😊

I love watching these videos and seeing how these animals live Day to day. These videos allow us to get close to the❤ animals without confining them to a zoo. I wish stupid people would stop killing them and selfishly taking them away from future generations. Also I wish stupid people would stay out of their space when they're in these areas. People walk right up to them and put a camera in their faces. The animals don't have anyplace to go to get away from these stupid selfish people.❤ tnx for all of your time and $

I began following HERD after Khanyisa's rescue in 2020 and they quickly became a very important part of my life. I can't imagine otherwise now. So much has happened since January 2020 - Covid, times of worry, great joy, loss, great sadness but there has been one huge constant throughout: the unwavering devotion, love and care for this diverse Elephant family. And they ARE a family, whatever their origins. Filled my heart watching Khanyisa confidently leading her Herd out the other day. She arrived here in a bad way, she gave me quite a few sleepless nights - truly - but just look at her now, and she's still so young. I think we owe Jabu a huge "Thank You". He was Khanyisa's first visitor and here he is doing the same for little Phabeni. Gentle rumbles of affection and encouragement and then I believe he conveys to the rest of his family the progress of Darling "FabPhab". Adine and her magnificent Care Team give their all to the care of this Elephant Family. These marvellous Elephants will all definitely outlive me too but how blessed I am to be part of their world, albeit online I Love you guys so much. You have enriched my life and helped through some very dark days. May God, or whomever your Higher Power my be, bless you all and keep you safe and well. Phabeni’s so content, falling asleep on Adine. He seems younger than 4 months. They grow when they sleep ❤️. God bless all of the HERD family & their families, giving up time from home!

I loved the end, back at the nursery when Phabeni at first looked anxious. But once Adine laid down next to him in the corner, he snuggled against her wrapping his truck over her and his eyes closing being with his security blanket...Adine.😊

I'm in awe of this little fellow's courage in building trust in humans. Of course, the HERD people are extremely good at taking care of him and giving him time and space to overcome his trauma. The fact that he is eating better and has more energy is a big help, of course. Well done, Zeuntje en HERD crowd!

This little man & his trunk skills amaze me every single time that I watch him. But also, every single time that I see him, I can't help think about his mother. What happened? If she is alive, how she accepted to stay with the herd and leave her baby behind? How does she or any other female who loses a baby learn to carry on, heal & survive. The animal kingdom (humans included) never ceases to amaze me.
I often think of that too, as I am a mum who lost her baby.
If she;s alive, she'll do as I did and every mother in that situation; she'll carry on but never forgets her baby.
I know whales and orca's never do too, they will also mourn their relatives that die, and so do elephants ❤
How heartwarming to see Phabeni relaxed with Adine in the nursery..he is developing more and more trust every day. I can see how he loves Adine❤❤

@alison__16 Never seen one move that fast!! It should take up residence at HERD...lots of good eats and safety. Many years ago (decades really) I saw a turtle trying to cross the road by my house. Going very slow, I knew he'd never survive, so picked him up and put him in grass on other side in hopes he'd keep going. Interesting creatures. We all need a helping hand sometimes.

Phabeni...baby isn't worried about the wind in an uncomfortable way. Maybe, what do you bet? His little feet felt the grounded herd behind him and he could smell them. He instinctively was going in their direction. He is so beautiful. Tokwe and her daughter are looking to help. Nice.

To everyone who helped making this orphanage become a reality for Adine I thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤️. Without your help elephants 🐘 like Khaynisa 🐘, Fenya 🐘 and Phabeni 🐘 would not have had a fighting chance of survival. Unfortunately Fenya 🐘 was found to late 😢. I do remember that video where Khaynisa 🐘, Pisa 🐘 and Timisa 🐘 were at the fence knowing there was another baby in the orphanage. Thank you for telling us that Tokwe 🐘 and Limpopo 🐘 have been bringing their food to the fence and eating it. That tells me that they are very aware of Phabeni 🐘. Phabeni 🐘 has a strong will to stay in the tall grass and not go back to the orphanage. But I guess soon after that he did and layed down for a nap woth Adine by his side. @@seawavesnightstars9452 both Shawn and Mopane were before my time. I know of both of them but have no idea of what happened to them. I only found HERD 🐘 when Khaynisa 🐘 was rescued. When I was at HERD visiting them back in 2021 I did ask Adine about Fenya 🐘 and she told me that she was buried on the reserve as were Shawu and Mopane. Thank you for reminding me about them also as they deserve to be recognized also❤️🐘❤️

Lil ellie Phabeni shows different types of his character which is really lovely to see. In that he didn’t really want to move away from the area, no doubt he will get better at coming when called or maybe he may have a bit of a mind of his own 😂 will be interesting to see as he grows up! Hopefully not another Mambo 😱. That tortoise sure could move, thanks for showing it, is he a resident too? 😊. For Tokwe to bring her food to what maybe get a glimpse of Phabeni so she is waiting for him to join them so she doesn’t go and try and nick a wild baby Ellie! 😱😄💖. The end was so so precious to see him move to lean on you, he is knowing love and he is safe thus contentment.

Feisty Phabeni 🐘 looked like he wanted to stay at the fence. But once back laying next to Adine he completely calmed down. Adine is the "Elephant 🐘 Whisperer! She has a real gift! Adine is a very special person! No doubt this Precious 💞 little 🐘 one is going to be accepted into the herd! Loved as much if not more than Khanyisa (our not so little Miss Sunshine).
