Lundi Chases After the Wild Elephants & Leads Us on a Wild Goose Chase! With Mambo in Tow…

  • Carer Owen and Adine share an update about and insight into Mambo and his recent antics. Not much later… Lundi and Mambo decide to throw a spanner in the works and add to their antics with a new adventure as Lundi chases after a nearby wild elephant herd. The herd runs from her and she follows after them, with Mambo deciding to follow after his mom, except they seem to go in opposite directions.
Some of our team follow after the two elephants on the run, tracking their footprints through the thick bush! The rest of the carers stay with the herd. Owen uses his bush skills to find Mambo easily but then it’s onto Lundi who is moving quickly after the wild herd. We see their fresh dung on the path and fresh elephant tracks.
Eventually we find Lundi close to the elephant homestead. Safe and sound. Tigere says that the wild elephants have recently been very spread out across the bush and have limited our herd’s grazing areas, causing a lot of run ins with the wild herd. Our rescued herd and the wild elephants try to avoid each other but if they come across each they they will often chase one another away.
Khanyisa and Tokwe give Adine a warm welcome after she and Owen had been running through the reserve for hours!

Adine, thanks so much for addressing the comments about just allowing Mambo to go off and join a wild herd. I have wondered about his state of mind but never doubted that letting him go is a much more complicated issue than most of us realize. I didn’t know that your area is dense with tourism and that Mambo’s familiarity with humans could prove dangerous for him, the wild herd, and the people nearby. The release and reintegration of wild animals must be carefully managed, as you wisely say. I am in awe of the team’s ability to wrangle such massive animals and of Owen’s tracking skills! Lundi certainly gave you all a workout before wandering back home after her adventure. It was thrilling to accompany you! My gratitude, respect, and best wishes to you all.

It’s a testament to the relationships that the carers have built with the herd that they are able to settle the elephants down and direct them back to the group. There’s no way to stop a running elephant or one that’s determined to go away-only the love and trust that has been built can guide them back. Thank you, kind carers!

You have explained so well why Mambo can’t just be released to a wild herd. A lot of human interaction certainly changes things. It is sad that we live in a world where this usually results in an unfortunate ending. The experiences of Mambo and Lundi have certainly broadened our understanding of how complicated things are in your care and management of the herd!

Such elephants may not be afraid of people, and not all people are good. They are simply not aware of the dangers of not having human guardians and of their wilderness survival instincts. I don't know if you pay attention, but you can often see this herd wandering in the wild, but behind them, you can see high-voltage power lines, this is a modern civilization that man is tearing up from nature.

Well done to Owen and the other carers tracking skills! Thats a mad mama chasing away her son's new girlfriends. She smelled the perfume. Thats an embarrassed and worried son running for cover. We can only wait to see what Khanyisa has learned from her adopted mom Lundi. Exercise and adventure for all. Thank you for taking us along. I can just imagine how difficult that task must be with all the overgrowth in the reserve. Seeing M. Mambo so peaceful at the beginning of the video, calmly munching next to Meisiekind, Tokwe and his mom was heartening. I love that M. Mambo is back with his family. I'm hoping that with continued love, support and affirmation from the members of his HERD--he will grow out of that normal teenage jol phase. What a day you had! The apple sure didn't fall far from the tree in this case! I'm impressed and not surprised, that every decision about the herd is made with extraordinary care. Equally, I'm amazed at your strength and stamina in personally undertaking the Lundi/Mambo chase! Thank you for sharing this remarkable story. And truly, good luck with mother and son😂❤❤❤

I’m so glad you brought Mambo back, people don’t know he’s not a wild elephant and he could create conflict with people and end up being killed by humans . He is not afraid of people but people are afraid of him not knowing he’s tame. He can’t be just let to leave with wild elephants because he will try to take wild elephants around humans not knowing he’s doing anything wrong. I love all the elephants of the Herd and don’t want any harmed. And his mother has not been without him and she may get sick because of his sudden disappearance.

It might be that Lundi noticed Mambo was missing and went to look for him, she went towards the wild herd, but Mambo had gone the other way.
Mambo is a teenager and like all teenagers he wanted some excitement, especially after he did a runner recently. He's going to be a worry now 😮
As you said, he couldn't be left with the wild herd, he had no knowledge of the dominance and how the herd functioned and was used to humans...
Jabu a 35 year old huge bull elephant 11ft at the shoulder who'd only known captivity and humans, was released back into the wild, because according to the rescue foundation, every wild animal has got to be released back into the wild, he had recurring eye and tusk gum infections which had to be treated.
He was taken out into the wilderness and left to fend for himself, it seems he was a nuisance round a lodge with humans, he was moved off and 2 months after being released he was found DEAD, According to the rescue foundation it wasn't poachers so that was OK with them, a fight with a wild bull they concluded, he had no idea how to defend himself.
Look for 'Jabu does the backstroke' on here, its wonderful to watch and another video with him having treatment for his eye infection and you'll see how big he was next to a human, he actually went down and lay on his side for this to be done. A beautiful elephant 🐘.
Bringing Mambo back definitely was the right thing to do, and thank god for common sense....

That's a good theory Jenny. Don't know which of them left first, but if it was Mambo, then that could well be.

What an amazing day. 😮 Everyone at Herd is devoted to their family and their welfare, and will never give up looking for the lost lamb. And planning the best future for each one of them too. Who knows best but those who understand and love and care for them so patiently, as well as the environment in which they must survive? So many factors to consider and hazards to beware of. I must say thank you everyone at Herd. How grateful I am that the welfare of these beautiful creatures is in such good and steady hands. Much love to Jabulani. 💖💖💖🐘💖💖💖🤗
