  • By 2027 Alfa's plans to have a range of only electric cars in the future could be a strategy they could back track on as demand and sales for EV's have fallen dramatically! 🔋📉

    I totally expect them to do the same as Maserati and Dodge, offering both ICE and EV Versions. But they should make sure the ICE engines are not only low end four cylinders like in the Junior

      Bingo, since the Hurricane engine is available for the STLA platform, using that makes the most sense.

      I believe the Junior is getting a 3 cylinder 1.2 ICE.
      And I see no problem with 4 cylinders as long as they have turbos.
      Yeap, more cylinders bring better sound, but also more
      complexity, more moving parts and less overall efficiency.
      I don’t think that would be a good move on such small vehicles.

    I can only speak for Europe, but if they don't want to become just a brand for enthusiasts, they shouldn't ignore EVs. In the comfort to premium segment, EVs are already priced on a par with their HEVs. For example, the upcoming facelift of the IONIQ5 with 84kWh battery (168kW motor) costs less than the base HEV Tonale (97kW power unit) in the Netherlands €47,000 versus €48.500 including tax and fees. So for anyone who includes the cost of ownership (fuel+maintenance) in the equation, EVs are already the more economically viable option, especially for people who can charge overnight at home. Maybe they could split their strategy for Europe and North America, but in the price segment of Stelvio and Giulia they would have a hard time in Europe with just ICE.
    Anyway looking at EU sales numbers for the first half of 2024 compared to the first half of 2023, BEVs are up 1.3%, even though some countries ended EV subsidy programs last December. On the other hand, in the same period pure petrol vehicles -0.5% and diesel vehicles - 7.5%. The reason why some journalists/influencers talk about the market decline over and over again is because Tesla is down a huge -9.1%, but they are so “independent” (stock owners, affiliate members) that they ignore the rest of the market and think this company represents the entire market. You can easily recognize them by the fact that in almost every article or video title, they mention that company's name regardless of what they are talking/writing about.

    • @RonsRides
      @RonsRides  Před měsícem

      I like this observation and breakdown because of the data presented. And I'm with you, EV's shouldn't be ignored. But priority seems crazy. I feel as you said the strategy could be split. Or even if standard ICE is abandoned but Hybrids are integrated. And yeah Tesla always shows up leading the way for bad examples lol.

    For Alfa Romeo, the engine and the styling is what makes the car. So using a Dodge engine as an option is out. People are moving so slowly to full electric therefore further develop the current ICE V6 and 4 cylinder an additional 5 - 7 years and add a hybrid engine alongside. By 2035 the hybrid engine and electric motor will become more acceptable. Still for an electric car a lot to work out from an infrastructure perspective . How are the cars going to be charged parked out on the curb or in a driveway?

    There is virtually no reason in my world to buy or drive an SUV. To my mind, all are negatives, needless ride height (because of, you know, physics) ,directly leading to inferior handling, added weight, inferior aero, etc. These negative are hardly out weighed by benefits. Why drive a penalty box for 365 days, for the what, four or five times the form factor was actually useful? I guess I just don't get it. As a 3 time Alfa owner, I would say the heritage always got me, and they were all a bit better engineered than their competition. Once you jack up a car 1/2' to a foot higher than it needs to be, engineering and thus handling becomes a moot point. One luggage carrier on wheels is pretty much like another. A new, state of the art Guilia would be good, and a traditional "Junior" sedan slotting in under it would keep me in the brand, but I suppose that is not going to happen, due to the market. Sad that the brand has to build Mitsubishi SUV competitors, instead of what made the brand great: Sporting sedans with a unique Italian flair. So long Alfa, I loved you so much, but we've grown too far apart.

    Hybrid for sure. No CVTs! Use a version of the Maserati V6 but make it a smaller bore 2.5 liter, high compression V6 with generator/motor in 8 speed auto. Offer models with recharge or simple hybrids. Result would be great sound, great performance and gas mileage.

    I had a problem stomaching Alfa and Maserati installing diesel engines, now EV, no way! Bad decision. High performance, low emission ICE with hybrid or without is the answer for the aforementioned brands. The AR Junior will sell better with a 1.5 ICE + PHEV or plain Hybrid (Sprint model) and a 2.0 litre ICE Turbo petrol (Veloce model, as present Giulia). I'm sure this would protect the AR brand and Junior model, the Junior to me is not an Alfa (looks Korean at the back/French at the front to me), in it's present form it is going to be a hard sell. With it's racing heritage AR should be looking at developing road engines around synthetic, non toxic fuels. The EV revolution, if you can call it that, will fade fast. It is already showing signs. There is always Hydrogen. How is AR Tonale 280 PHEV selling globally I wonder?

Volvo and Polestar are too far on the full-EV road, Sweden will support those companies and don't change course.
