Waking up embarrassed from anesthesia 😳

- your mindset before surgery, whether major or minor surgery, may affect how you wake up from anesthesia. there is a lot we don't understand about emergence delirium, and why we wake up emotional, screaming, crying, or saying ridiculous things. however, it is very important to have a healthy, healing mindset before something as major as surgery. who knows, it might well help patients wake up more calmly after surgery. Fighting the anesthesia, is not a healthy, or relaxed way to go under!
I was terrified once that I was going to wake up during surgery - so when surgery was over and they woke me up I shot straight up screaming "DONT START IM NOT ASLEEP YET" 😂😂😂
How long did it seem like you were asleep for?
@@thevikingwarrioridk about the person above but I’ve had 11 surgeries my longest being a 4.5hr back surgery. They all felt the same. I knew I was going to sleep, then bam I’m being woke up by the nurse telling me to take a deep breath. Then as soon as you can hold down liquids and graham crackers and can pretty much hold your own they will 1. Let you go home with a responsible party 2. Move you to a room in you have to stay. I have ptsd after my back surgery I hd at 24yrs old. I woke up in my room in excruciating pain. Nurse said I had my meds and it shouldn’t hurt so bad. I couldn’t do anything bc I was shaking from the pain so she got me an ice pack and had me lay on my side. I laid there crying in pain. Almost passed out from the pain and the dumb as assistant nurse picked my ice pack up and it was wedged between a pillow and my incision, I shoot up screaming in pain. I asked for a manager/doctor bc I needed help asap. I thought I was going to die. I kept fighting with the nurse telling her my iv wasn’t working and she just kept telling me to calm down and wouldn’t listen when I said all my meds were pinched off bc she caught the iv in the lockbox. So it took me 4.5hrs of the worst pain of my life for a doc to see me. He requested the keys and opened the box and sent all the meds at once plus a dose of anxiety meds. I had a fever of 104.3, I made everyone leave but my mom and turned the ac on and stripped all the blankets and gown off and put a tank top on. And finally fell asleep for an hour till she came in to take my blood pressure on the same arm as my iv and blew the iv out of my arm and blood went everywhere. Didn’t know at the time but the reason I was in so much pain is bc the surgeon messed me up. By my 6wk check up he had went back to his home country. I’m 43 now and can barely function. Never get back surgery unless you absolutely have too
@@thevikingwarrior for most people it feels like you close your eyes for a moment and then you open them and are in a completely different environment - which is why people can fall asleep while having a conversation and then wake up continuing that same conversation. they don't feel like any time has passed

It turns out I have 2 modes. Asleep and awake. Very little is in-between.😂
Nice analogy. With sleep it's more like, whatever was running before you went unconscious will often run for much of the night.
It's super helpful to give yourself some positive affirmations just before you fall asleep for this reason.

I was under "twilight" sedation so i was awake but asleep, it feels like when you take the best nap of your life but if they ask a question or need you to move or something, you can do it just fine. I feel like a princess taking a nap in my cloud castle. My anesthesiologist always rubs my hand until i doze off and she will brush my hair out of my face since im not supposed to move while they do the bone marrow biopsy. The anesthesiologist, the one doing the biopsy and the one learning how to do biopsies are all the sweetest ladies and we all have conversations while i doze off and they compliment me on how well i did and everything, its great. Waking up sucks bc i have a hole in my hip from the biopsy and when the meds wear off, i FEEL it lol but i get a bone marrow biopsy once a year and i look forward to my one good sleep of the year
One time I was pretty chill about a surgery and I was confused so I sat up and said: “Hey, where’s the sleepy medicine thing?” The surgery was literally over and I hadn’t even noticed I was asleep.
My first surgery as a kid was like this, it was 6:30am, so I just fell asleep before getting to the operating room because I was tired and had been woken up at 5am
My mother is a CRNA and she always likes to say "I'll knock you out however I need, even if I need to use my trusty rubber mallet". I'm so proud of her for doing what she does, she's helped countless people go through procedures with no issues and it makes me very happy to know that
Please tell your mom, thank you! ❤
I welcomed it with open arms knowing it will be my best sleep in years, and when the nurses woke me up I asked for five more minutes

Two months ago when i went under, i remember everything.
When they injected the solution, liquid fire flowed through my veins, the pain was on a different level. Time had slowed, i tried asking the nurse if this was supposed to hurt like this, and if i should still be awake.
But they didn't answer me.
Nothing would come out of my mouth I was too tired to speak too tired to move but the pain wouldn't let me sleep. I was just paralyzed there on the table.
After what felt like 6 hours, i heard the dr tell the nurse that he was done and to wake me up, and to go let my wife know i was all finished.

You do feel like you'll wake up instantly!
I had a lot of surgeries and anesthesias (including several medically induced comas) but the worst one was definitely my gastroscopy “anesthesia” and my transjugular liver biopsy.
I told them multiple times that anesthesias take longer to have an effect on me.
They gave me two or three additional injections of anesthesia, but I just didn’t fall asleep. However, I couldn’t move and started to cry.. the doctor didn’t care if I was asleep or not and just shoved the camera down my throat. The nurses even told him to stop because I wasn’t sleeping yet. Then he threw away my piercingsand asked me the dumbest questions ever after the procedure - “ohhh are you already awake? Did you sleep at all? So you felt everything?”. He knew the answers to all of these questions.
The doctors refused to give me anesthesia when I had my transjugular (through the vein in my neck) liver biopsy. They told me that I couldn't have anesthesia because I have to breathe in a specific way during the biopsy / biopsies. I only found out after my transplants that other patients were allowed to have anesthesia and that it was actually “normal” to have an anesthesia during the procedure. After that, I refused to have a transjugular liver biopsy without anesthesia ever again.
The doctor had to try about eight times to hit my jugular vein because the needle / catheter always slipped out.
He took more than 8 biopsies.
I have a very high pain tolerance but at some points the biopsy really hurt.. the moment the catheter passed my heart, my whole chest burned like hell, my heart rate was over 200, I couldn’t breathe and felt like I'm about to pass out. They just didn’t care. I wasn’t allowed to move or talk..
Thats horrible, that shouldn't be allowed and you could sue them for breach of care if it terrified you that much
I'm so sorry that happened. It is so heartbreaking how some health care professionals function and the toll it takes on us 😭

I remember waking saying "wait I'm still awake" and then they said "we're already done" and I was like "what".
Yeah the weirdest thing about it was that it felt like a blink of an eye. When you are normally asleep you still have a sense of time having passed, not under anesthesia.
Best news is that you were actually awake the entire time. Anesthesia paralyzes you and causes amnesia. You’re actually awake the whole time, feeling everything, probably having a mental breakdown.
Even better, a small percentage of the time, the amnesia doesn’t happen and you remember.
This is not true. It’s true that you get a muscle relaxant, that’s not the same as the anesthesia itself. During the surgery you are closely monitored. If your parameters are indicating pain, the CRNA will give you more medication.
@@mrarchaicworld Why would you even think that? Do you think when you're asleep you are actually awake but just don't remember? haha
When anesthetic wears off before the muscle relaxant you wake up, that's why they notice your readings go through the roof even if you are not moving and then put you back to sleep.
Getting anesthetized can be some of the best sleep you'll ever get.
9 years ago, I woke up after surgery and had a little conversation with the nurse tending to me. I've forgotten what it was about but i ended up telling her "You have a lovely bedside manner."
Last week I had my appendix out, I woke up and my teeth would not stop chattering. I wasn't cold but I just really needed someone to comfort me. The nurses got me an extra blanket but after another minute or two I asked the nearest nurse if she could hold my hand, which she did, and I burst into tears 😅
She was so kind. I'm really grateful for her compassion while I was feeling very vulnerable
I always loved it when the patient woke up finishing the conversation they had b4 they went to sleep.
That happened to me lmao he asked about my tattoos so I started telling him then I woke up telling the wall
They asked me if I liked wine. I woke up listing different wines I liked. Nurse got confused and asked me if I was asking for wine 😂
I woke up finishing the joke I was telling as I went to sleep, staff were confused about "no, I'm Moses jesus is the Rottweiler & he is behind you" I know if an anesthetist asks me to tell them a joke again I'll do a short knock knock one.
I’d wake up and start talking about nitroglycerin lmfao
I remember when I had my wisdom teeth removed. I saw the nurse walk to the corner and turn around with a huge syringe. I said "That's a big- Needle" To me it was like I blinked and everyone disappeared.
I woke up once to this nurse yelling at a man in recovery. She kept saying,”Sir, sir! Stop that! Sir that’s a tube! Sir put your penis down!! Sir you do not want to take that out of your penis! Sir let go of your penis!” It was great 😂

I warned a surgeon that I don’t sedate well. I have a tendency to wake up and not because I want to. I’ve been under four times and woke up three Novacaine does not work on me. I’ve never been to the dentist where I didn’t feel what they were doing, so sometimes it’s not all in your brain sometimes it’s your chemical make up.
My grandmother had a bloated stomach from fluids. She was in pain and they put her out so they could perform a few tests while she was relaxed. When she woke up, she looked at her stomach and her eyes got all big. She said "I'm not having this baby alive. Y'all get it out of me!" We all had a good laugh at that one. My favorite was later when she saw her feet. She had on black socks, but the white blanket covered one. She gasped "What's wrong with me, having one sock black and one white?" I'll never forget that woman. RIP Granny ❤
That's beautiful! God bless her ❤
I had 2 Surgeries recently and i just ask a lot of questions, testing my Amateur Knowledge and trying to understand what they do! its always fascinating!
I hope they don't mind my curiosity!
When its time for anesthesia, i always enjoy the process, i ask what they will use, what it does to the body, and then i focus on the sensations of the medication working on my body!
I love modern Medicine!
I’m always a “alright team, put me to sleep” type of guy so I tend to just wake up refreshed and happy😂😂
I recently had to have anesthesia for the first time and I was scared because in my head I didn't understand where my conscience would be during the unaccounted for time (not realizing its just like taking a nap) . I prayed before going under and when I finally came to I felt God was right next to me on my right side. I had so much peace and love in my heart like I understood how much he loves and cares for us. Then he had to leave me (not that he ever leaves, but that he wouldn't be sitting with me like he was) and I cried because I was sad, but also comforted knowing Jesus was returning and we would be together very soon. This happened a week from today and it was such a beautiful moment. He wants us to be gentle on ourselves and to others. Stop giving yourself a hard time in life, rest in Him. Jesus is enough♡
Unfortunately anything that numbs or puts me to sleep triggers my fight or flight response. Usually for me its the fight response. I also tend to wake up early from the anesthesia.
Me too and it’s embarrassing
Tbh, I'm just glad it's not just me. I had a dentist treat me like I'm an idiot when I told him the one time I was put under, I started fighting involuntarily as I was losing consciousness.
Yeah... i punched a nurse twice, i told them i needed more than most people, i have redhair but it only shows in my beard, and im 6'10 and weigh 350lbs. They ended up dosing me with enough to knock out 4 1/2 people, when i came to they told me that i was right and informed me i punched a nurse in the middle of it
@@emer07jiffybro I’m sorry but you’re too damn big to be punching nurses 😭 I hope they’re okay lol
@emer07jiffy damn, that's wild. When it happened to me, I was about 16, 120lbs, and I kicked a doc in the chest before they actually had to hold me down.
I had heart surgery two years ago had a hard time waking up. They told me I had delirium for 4 days. Took me 6 months to get my faculties back. Hope I wasn’t disrespectful to anyone because I can’t remember a thing
woke up and CREAMED "NOOOOOOOO"
Never fought it. Best, restful sleep ever.
When I had surgery I was having a huge panic attack right before going into the OR and my anesthesiologist said “I’m gonna give you something to calm you down” and pushed the anesthesia. I woke up not just having a massive panic attack, but in a state of paranoid psychosis. I ended up ripping out my IV in the recovery room and walking all the way out of the hospital in paper scrubs and taking an Uber home
That's hilarious man, did nobody stop you?
Had surgery 4/22, and the surgeon did a good job, but took off after I came to and never saw him again. The anesthesiologist on the other hand came by the next day and visited w/me & made sure I was okay. That made me feel much better, not so alone. Really nice guy.
I came to during a colonoscopy in 2017, screaming my head off. Remember everything that happened, everything I said & what the very kind nurse said. I remember it all except the pain. Then the doc yelled for more drugs and I went back under. Scared my mom tho, because I have a very high pain threshold and have never screamed in my life (& I have broken a lot, dislocated a lot, cut my hand & leg badly, etc). As far away as she was, I must have screamed very loudly for her to hear me and recognize my voice.
Riveting storyline and character development
People in my family come to, but rarely feel the pain. Only one person had that problem. That must have been terrible!
I can confirm this is true. As a 7 year old getting my tonsils removed and having very awful anxiety, I was put under while fighting and trying to run out of the room, and I proceeded waking up fighting trying to run out of the room.
When i had surgery i remember I woke up in the middle of it and started telling the doctors about the cartoons I loved (i was 12), I also remember feeling things moving inside of me and I don’t think i’ll experience a more weird feeling in my life
I remember a nurse telling me “you’re all done” and I said “what’s wrong, why are you canceling my surgery?” 😂 I thought i had
never fallen asleep.
Then there’s me, an adult whose terrified when being out to sleep so has tears dripping as I try to breathe properly because drs telling me I’m too anxious I need to relax let it work 😂
How was your experience because I will be under it for the first time in A few months and I’m so nervous
I was scared af crying for no reason and then woke up feeling fine, like oh, it's over? It was like nothing like I close my eyes and open them no time passed
Its fine
@@rosynessrose6556 That's what everyone says about anesthesia, so hard for me to comprehend. :)
The longest surgery I’ve ever had was eight hours for scoliosis spinal surgery and the anesthesia literally put my consciousness out, no dreams, no nothing, and I woke up eight hours later, thinking that I had merely blinked my surgery away. I was only eleven years old, so I didn’t quite comprehend the extent of the surgery, but I got to choose between them putting laughing gas on me before they gave me the shot that would render me kaput for the surgery. I chose the laughing gas and my last few milliseconds before I went out smelled really bad (the team said it was supposed to smell like strawberries, and it did before the last few deep breaths). Before I went out though, I told them to disregard me if I say or do anything dumb. 😂
Anyways, it’s all right if you’re scared. I might have to get my scoliosis fixed a second time, and as an adult who is learning about all the components of a successful surgery and the team of DRs and Nurses behind that, and I’m feeling much more vulnerable about the whole situation than my eleven year old self ever did. 😅 ❤
His patient right now: 💀
Thats what I love about anesthesia, it just like pauses your brain so it just resumes when you wake up 😂
I just wanna thank the lady that held my hand as I drifted off on the operating table before surgery. First time going under and I was super anxious, and that small gesture really helped me calm down and relax.
I just had surgery this week and I waved night night and said, "Make good choices..." All I remember is giggles...
This didnt convince me, i will 100% still try to fight.
That sounds like a badass way of waking up
I always fall asleep in the OR feeling very safe and like I'm the most important person to all of those people. They make such a huge effort to be kind and reassuring and ask me how I'm doing and put me at ease. The last time the nurse just sat there rubbing my arm in such a caring and comforting way until I went under. Honestly, I'm so sorry for people who can't just soak in being the focus of so much care and concern their team genuinely feel. Let yourself be cared for, you deserve it.
Oh my god real, thank you for putting it into words, it's an incredible feeling!
This is beautiful and so helpful ❤ thank you 💕
🙋🏻♀️ I’m one of those people. Anesthesia is scary af.
@@tat2dMama68 but it feels so good!
@@FortheBudgiesthats an opinian
When i did my wisdom teeth they didnt say ANYTHING, they all just came in the room, told me who they were, and said "goodnight". No "count down" or whatever, I stood no chance
My husband did that. He told the doctor " you're gonna have to give me a lot because it won't make me tired" the doctor rolled his eyes and says that everyone says that.
I caught the Anastasia and woke up so peacefully. I kind of wanted it again.
They say "Okay take a few breaths of oxygen" and I'm already trying to go to sleep 😂😂😂
I’m still confused cause I think it was the gas, literally fell asleep after taking deep breaths of what they said was “oxygen”. So was it actually oxygen or was she trying to trick me
Woke up during surgery. Still far worse than anything most people can imagine. I was eleven and I still remember struggling to get someone's attention so they'd know what was happening. I still remember when the doctors realized I was awake and the panic they went into! Absolutely nothing compared to my relief of finally being discovered! But to this day I still fight the anesthesia!
Damn, what surgery was it?
@@AHHHHHHHH21 My hand suffered second and third degree burns and I had to get a couple skin grafts. That was the original surgery. My hand didn't heal right so the doctor had to break the bone and reset it. He also performed a second skin graft because he realized that his first piece was too small.
I'm so sorry this happened to you. ❤
@@sarbearsleeps333 I thought that was the worst thing to happen to me. But thirty years later while in surgery I ended up in asystole for 30 seconds! It was surreal when the nurse explained to me that the chest pain I would be feeling was from getting CPR! I didn't believe her until I got the after action report. 🤯
I fought the anastehtic. They said “you’re probably gonna fall asleep” and I said “no I will not” and sure enough I was half conscious (enough to remember I was awake but not do nun or say nun or feel a thing) but def comatosed. It was when I was getting my endoscopy. Mad shit I loved it.
If i ever do a surgery again,my last words before falling asleep will be "Bravo 6,going dark"
3 days after my knee surgery the anesthesia team came into my room to tell me they were genuinely impressed. They said I counted down from 100 and got to 63 before I went lights out. i honestly don't remember anything beyond the mid 80s.
I got to 97
this made me giggle
@@Calcanthitedamn, you just went right out
@@AHHHHHHHH21 My brain activity is very low and I sleep a LOT
This is so cool! 😂
meanwhile i'm lying there helping them get the right vein, suggesting something with a longer and smaller catheter, and watching their amusement turn to anxiety when i don't go down even though i told them how much i needed to be put under effectively. i have EDS.
I've only been under anesthesia twice in my life. For the more recent one, I was an adult getting my wisdom teeth removed, and I remember feeling extremely relaxed when they started, and when I woke up I didn't feel groggy or drowsy at all. It was like a complete gap in my memory from the start to the end of the procedure, with a side effect of feeling like I had just taken an amazing nap.
In paramedic school our instructor would tell us to have the patient think happy thoughts before sedating them because they would wake up happy because of the “good dreams” but he also said if they are combative and rude to talk to them about spiders and snakes as they go under.
Recently I had a brain surgery. I was totally awake while they rolled my bed to the operation room. But the last thing I remember was the closed doors from the outside. I didn't even make it into the operation room this time. 😂
When I woke up later, I had a flashback that really upset the nurses. One was about to call the cops when my anaesthesiologist came and told them that I was the one with PTSD and they need not call the cops. 🙈 I can't remember anything. They later told me I had been hiding under the hospital bed as soon as I had woken up.
What did they think the cops could do when you are hospital induced under the influence?!
@@s.h.6858nothing cause it didnt happen lol. Look at all their comments, they're just fishing for attention. Most brain surgeries are done under local, not general, and they dont administer anesthesia prior to the OR as the patient has to be alert for all of the double check questions prior to starting surgery.
@@Mike.The.Jeweler why do you hate fun
@@Mike.The.Jeweler My brain surgery was done under general anesthesia, I had a fence screwed in 7 hours prior with 5/8 “dry wall screws”. I am a RN who specialized in neuro and brain surgeries are done both ways just like any other part of your body. If they pre mapped your brain then terrific. TV shows don’t show what really happens. And if one has a milder anesthesia than you best bet those anesthesiologists know what they are doing and how deep they can be to obey motor commands then when done they let them return to a deeper stage until done. Some universities allow ones interested in the medical field to watch. PTSD responses are absolutely real!! Post Covid has left even more people quite a bit twitchy and rightly so.
@jenjenf1996 that's cool, you're not the person I was talking to were you? Thanks for your unnecessary input though, as nothing you said had anything to do with my issues with that person's comments. I've had a dozen surgeries and watched as my little brother had an awake craniotomy. No one is confused by tv or movies in the comments aside from the original poster.
I was being put under and I was very calm but right before I passed out I got a strong wave of fear and I told the doctor. When I woke up I was SURE the nurses in the recovery room were going to dirt nap me and I tried to escape in fear for my life. The nurses were ready and hit me with another shot. When I woke up again I was fine. That still haunts me. I asked the doctors what was used and they told me not to worry about it so now I live in fear of needing another surgery.
I feel like that's a tad bit illegal to not tell you what they used
I woke up thinking my nurse stole my (nonexistent) cheeseburger 😂😂
I stand on business bro. If you putting me to sleep fighting, I'm waking up fighting.
Anesthesia is one of the scariest thing i ever went thru you are so vulnerable and you life is in someone elses hands God bless all the doctors for their work
