Addiction: our most dangerous man-made virus
#addictionrecovery #mentalhealthawareness #medicaleducation
Human engineered addictive substances can overwhelm our brain's anti-addiction mechanisms, like how a virus evades our immune system. Learn the connection between addiction, viruses, and chronic fatigue so you can better understand your natural defenses against addiction.

Addiction is not just a choice; it's a complex disease that deteriorates critical functions of the human brain, making it as dangerous as a virus. In this video, I dive into the harrowing reality of how addiction mimics viral infections and the profound impact it has on the brain and body.
Join me as I explore the following key points:
Firstly, I explain how highly engineered addictive substances overwhelm our body's natural defense systems. Much like how viruses and cancerous cells evade and overpower our immune system, these substances attack the prefrontal cortex - the part of the brain responsible for impulse control and self-regulation. When people are in pain or suffering, this vulnerable state allows addictive behaviors to sneak in and hijack the brain’s natural mechanisms. This results in a vicious cycle where the addiction grows stronger, deteriorating the prefrontal cortex further, and eroding our impulse control.
Secondly, I delve into the parallels between withdrawal states and chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). Potent addictive substances, both physical and digital, can stimulate the brain so intensely that they leave us in a state of withdrawal, similar to post-infectious fatigue. Natural substances rarely occur in amounts sufficient to overwhelm the prefrontal cortex, but when reward pathways are intensely activated, withdrawal becomes inevitable. This state can be incredibly debilitating, leaving individuals exhausted and vulnerable to relapse.
The video highlights the insidious tactics of drug dealers who constantly modify substances to deteriorate the prefrontal cortex faster, making impulse control more difficult. This isn't limited to physical drugs like fentanyl but also includes digital addictions, which can be just as destructive.
Moreover, I discuss the fascinating role of psychedelics and ketamine in regrowing neurons in the prefrontal cortex, offering a beacon of hope in treating serious addictions. These substances, when used in the right therapeutic context, can help rebuild the brain’s ability to control impulses and overcome addiction.
The epidemic of addiction is not just a local issue but a global one, and it requires a compassionate and innovative approach to treatment. I encourage you to share your thoughts on how we can address this crisis in San Francisco and beyond. Understanding addiction as a disease rather than a moral failing is crucial in creating effective solutions.
This video is not just about understanding addiction but also about sparking a conversation on how we can collectively tackle this epidemic with empathy and advanced treatments. Let’s work together to find compassionate solutions to this pressing issue.

Yea, doctors have tried to kill me several times. Had a baby out of the womb grown to my stomach and other organs and when my husband said I was very ill and that something was wrong with me, he was told that I was just a whinner and complainer. Was in bed for 8 months until the stomach busted open. 24 hours later,36 pints of blood, dead for 6 minutes. The doctor never even came to see me.

I honestly think for many it comes down to personal responsibility. Now before people come at me accusing me of being ignorant, I have 2 brother, my dad, 1 grandfather, 2 aunts, 5 uncles and 2 cousins who are all alcoholics or drug addicts, some who have died because of their addictions. My husband’s high school best friend was also a drug addict and now works for a recovery center and is a counselor for addicts. I myself have 6 chronic disabling diseases/conditions and take 18 medications including opioids and multiple other medications that cause withdrawal when/if stopped. A big problem with people today especially is lack of personal accountability. It is a CHOICE to take an illegal drug, it is a CHOICE to abuse a prescribed medication. Excuses are made for the addict, “____ drug is addictive from the first dose they are a victim” etc. But ultimately it will always come down to that choice to use for that first time and to take more than prescribed.

Labels!!! It keeps people from getting the help they need. Once a label appears, it can lead medical staff down the wrong path. They see it then follow the same path as the original doctor. Example, I was thrown into a label of functional mobility disorder. I have bipolar. They assumed this was a problem , referred me to John Hopkins. Wondering why he didn't do a full neuro assessment, find out he is neuro psych, following a diagnosis that they do cognitive therapy for. Meanwhile, being an extremely active 60 year old, with 4 year rapid vision problem, balance, swallowing, dystonia, coordination decline, am getting quite frustrated. In that year of waiting I developed bilateral foot drop, muscle atrophy and increases in the other already declining problems. Advocating for myself all through this and a handful of doctors here that kept pushing referrals and tests, said we are looking down the wrong path. Neuro referral #6, year 5, already testing and referred right to their neuromuscular team. I am a nurse. Labels can be very harmful. No matter any previous assessment, medical staff should treat theirs like the first time it's being done. Yes try the treatments recommended, know your medications, ask all the questions you can, be informed about any diagnosis you have. If something seems off with any of the treatment options, YOU ARE THE BEST ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF. Keep pushing if it's not working. These people are trained, but don't always ask the right questions. People have trouble communicating at times. If the doctor is over your head with it, ask them to talk in terms you will understand. Always know your medications. Let the doc know as soon as something seems off. Responsibility is both parties. The caregiver and the care reciever.

I had fear of my heart valve surgery. I had two concepts that gave me ease. The first was i only had Two outcomes, life with God or life with my husband. The second was told to me by the surgeon. He said I will have a good out come because I had a sense of humor and I liked the music that was playing in the OR. I have watched many of your episodes. You provide so much knowledge and in my case, I think, some ignorance allowed me not to a have hang up on every detail. I did have disappointment at home healing than during my hospital stay.

I was hospitalized for seven weeks.I had surgery six times including hernia repairs, bowel recesection and a fistula leaking acid out of the open wound in my stomach around the clock.I was appalled at my care.My nurses would ignore my pain medication request even though my surgeon approved it.I was changing my own open wound to no avail it wouldn't stop leaking nor would the nurses come in to check me.I laid there in severe pain from surgeries, acid pouring out of my wound and no relief.Sometimes as long as six hours.People with severe pain should be treated with care and respect.I am home now and healing but after sixteen stomach surgeries and my last experience I am really disappointed in the health care system.

Oh, this hits home right now! I've had CRPS since 1998, and I've been doing okay for a while, but since I moved from Tampa FL to Amsterdam NY, I can't get my pain management pump filled because the only doctor near me who fills pumps is an angry, dismissive, power hungry, arrogant jerk. He has more one star reviews online than any other person or business I have ever seen, but he's still practicing medicine. It blows my mind that there's nothing I can do to help myself. I've filed complaints, but my insurance and Medicare say there's nothing they can do, despite the existence of continuity of care laws. I wonder what happened to this guy to make him this horrible. I feel like the entire medical community here is in on some kind of inside joke so they don't have to actually help anyone. I've about given up trying. It shouldn't be this hard to find care.

Thanks a zillion ! I recently had 2 similar "gaslightings" ; one with a GP that I had been with for many years (after searching for another doctor at that time, with no results). I had an MRI done concerning my knee, and she had gotten a copy, of course. She waited until my final yearly visit, and at the last moment she pulled out her copy. Because the Orthopaedic didn't provide the truth of the MRI for me (telling me I could skip and run all I wanted); did that for nearly 4 mo. and noticed more pain, so called the Orthopaedic office to get "layman terms" from my MRI results, he had left town ! So, I thought perhaps my GP would be able to help me. When I requested what she could tell me from that copy, she jumped up from her chair, said "talk to your Orthopaedic!", and she RAN out the door. I was in such shock that a professional would do that. THAT very day was the last day that she was moving into another "doctors office" to care for other patients in the area. I had considered sending her a letter, at her new location, to speak my truth. She shouldn't be allowed to speak to anyone that way. Is there another way to approach this ??
