"Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" on the Glass Armonica

- Find this and more at www.williamzeitler.com/store/C... . William Zeitler plays his arrangement of Tchaikowsky's "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" from the Nutcracker (1892) on the glass armonica invented by Benjamin Franklin. (This is the song Hanna plays on Kuroshitsuji.) He is accompanied by a harp and a bass clarinet.

I love how he's dressed as the inventor of the instrument, Ben Franklin.
That's actually Ben Franklin. This is rare unseen footage.
NitroFlak ;)
omfg is there footage of Jefferson playing violin too?????
cock blockula!
They were being sarcastic -_-
I knew Ben Franklin had glasses but I didn't know he played them. Also the camera technology back then was amazing.
It's even more impressive when you realize that he's two years dead when this piece was composed!
Yonkage he's truly ahead of his time
It was only the camera he invented that looked this good. It fell out of fashion like the glass armonica and was forgotten for a long time. We had to put up with black and white film over color digital for a long time as a result.
Underrated comment
Right after he invented a stove, he worked out time travel. I'm surprised you didn't read about it in his sequel to his autobiography. Ooops. My bad. It hasn't been published yet. Carry on.
This is a much more mystical and magical Sugar Plum Fairy than as played by the traditional celesta, which sounds rather more chirpy and cheerful. Bravo.
Absolutely correct. The glass harmonica makes the celesta sound like Def Lepperd.
It sounds more natural on the Glass Armonica, as if it was written for the instrument.
It is a real shame these instruments never became more widely available.
They were really popular around 1780-1810 or so. Even Mozart and Beethoven composed for it. But music was moving out of the relatively small aristocratic halls into large public concert halls, and without amplification it couldn't be heard any more. So they gave up on it.
@@grailheart it being prone to breakage also meant it was expensive to maintain. one of the guys playing a modern version (electric motor instead of foot powered) says it is always like Christmas opening it up after transport.
I just watched a video about how this instrument is cursed. Well back in the old days. Idk how true it is.
There’s also some info I found on them being banned in some places, apparently they can drive people insane with prolonged exposure and have caused a lot of very odd and disturbing situations
@@zyanidwarfare5634 They talked about this on Rob Scallon's video. It's true, but not true. They were banned for this reason, but there is no reason these would have caused any issues. People thought something was going to happen, so they made it happen. Mass hysteria, just like with King Tut's tomb.
Plot twist... a CD is playing in the background and this guy is just trying to stop the machine from spinning.

The sound is hard to describe. Very interesting and beautiful and powerful.
Thanks for listening!
haunting

Geez, that's a cool sound! It's so perfect for this song. Utterly haunting!
this part of the Nutcracker was made to be played with that instrument
Actually, no. It was written for Celesta.
From Wikipedia:
"One novelty in Tchaikovsky's original score was the use of the celesta, a new instrument Tchaikovsky had discovered in Paris. He wanted it genuinely for the character of the Sugar Plum Fairy to characterize her because of its "heavenly sweet sound""
DoctorWhoFanBadWolf my bad, a new thing learned
You got Ben Franklin playin some bowls here
I was just surfing CZcams and saw this in my recommended videos. I'd never heard a glass harmonica before now. I'm impressed.
*armonica
+Lila DiMasi Invented by Benjamin Franklin. And yes it is called a Glass Armonica.
+TheStarToursTraveler it is both, armonica or glass harmonica
heard of it a long time ago as a sound option on a keyboard when I was a child. Never really knew what it was, now I know.
same here.
what an underappreciated musical instrument.
It's too interesting musical instrument. Why people hate this?? How can anyone hate this beautiful pice of art by Benjamin Franklin!!

Hauntingly ethereal, impossibly beautiful. This instrument sounds so extremely unlike anything else in the world. I would give almost anything for a chance to own and play one of these treasures.
Such a splendid, hypnotic and penetrating sound... Glass harmonica really sounds like Heaven! 💖🤍
Its like this instrument was designed specifically to play this piece.

These instruments are just amazing, and so are the people who play them! I saw one played in person about 20 years ago and I am still impressed by its" "other worldliness' sound. Thanks for posting.
I think I prefer this armonica version to the celeste version of this song. The armonica is absolutely stunning! I'm so glad Ben Franklin invented this instrument, if only I could learn to play such an amazing invention.

What's equally amazing to the instrument itself is the fact that he memorized that whole song. I have a hard time remembering it in my own head let alone on an instrument and I'm pro musician. Outstanding!
Dear Mister Potter, We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Omg xD
This dialouge perfectly fits with the sound of it. It made me imagine youg potter reading the letter with curiosity on his face.. And It could be a good background music for Luna lovegood as well, I guess?? :)

Dear Mr. Franklin, We are pleased to inform you that your appointment for the post of Hogwarts headmaster has been confirmed.
I don't think they used a glass armonica in the harry potter sound track. I believe they used some sort of instrument that looks like a piano but makes a bell noise. I don't know what's called.
Man the cut you'd get if one of those got an edge

Hola amigos
Really Nice. The dulcet tones of the glass armonica are perfect for one of my favorite Nutcracker Suite songs. Thank you for sharing..
It's guys like this who make you realize how little you've accomplished.
In other words, that's amazing.
Most charming. I can see the Sugar Plum Fairy delicately dancing!
Here is another instrument I have not seen before but it sounds wonderful.
a most heavenly sound!
I met a gentleman in the post office today as I was shipping a guitar. We started talking about music and he brought up the armonica. Admittedly I've never seen one but obviously I've heard it many times. This is a beautiful, unique instrument. Beautifully played.
Quite a match between the sound and the piece and its title of song

My daughter has danced to Mr Zeitler's glass harp version for the last 4 years!!! She is so dedicated that she will not dance to any other person's version of this tune!
At a weekend party in the mountains, someone had one of these. I love the sound. But even better when my GF and I went for a walk. It was being played, outdoors, as we crested a hill, on the way back. At first, the sound was almost subliminal. A real treat!
But outdoor music is often special, the way the wind might change the sound.

Never getting bored of this.
I hear strings.
Yes, you do. What's wrong with that?
Zormac
The title leads one to believe the piece would contain sound only from the glass instrument.
Eighteenth Oh, well, I hadn't thought of that. Many videos showcasing instruments have the base in the background with other instruments (often a keyboard) for strings and percussion, and the main instrument is often responsible for the melody. It's also very common to see people who edit their videos to have the same instrument playing different tracks.
It's safe to say, though, that this song was played on the glass harmonica, as the title suggests :)
That may be. It just makes it harder to distinguish the true tone of the instrument I'm watching the video to hear.
Eighteenth You'll notice in the description it says: "He is accompanied by a harp and a bass clarinet."

If anyone here is confused about the large amount of new comments written in Chinese these few days, it is because in the English paper of the nationwide student assessment of Taiwan, there is a passage about the glass armonica in the comprehension part, but both the passage and the questions are confusing, and made a lot of examinee lose marks. Therefore, it became a trending meme in Taiwan. That's why this comment section is filled with Chinese comments
