Could Muay Thai have arrived from Pankration? When Alexander the Great travelled down to India he gave the King of Poros an exhibition in Pankration and many of his figthers stayed in India.India and Burma where the Thai tribes lived used to be neighbors 250 BC.
Max Dostor, this could be a possibility indeed. There is no hard evidence so far, however you make a very credible and valid point geographically. In the ancient Olympics, there was a sub division of Pankration called 'Ano Pankratio' which was 'Standing Pankration'. This of course was all stand up fighting which consisted of boxing, kicking techniques and the use of knees. I believe you are correct with your correlation between Muay Thai & its link to Pankration. Cheers Max! Thank you for your contribution and input.. 👍🏻
Why is the name of an idol featured so prominently in this video, some two millennia after the Greeks became Christian? I was taught that Greek athletes competed naked (no protection for the groin!) and that circumcised men (i.e. Jews) were not allowed to participate. This was a major sticking point leading up to the successful Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Emperor Antiochus IV.
👍👍

Because Zeus is strong and it takes a strong man to compete in Pankration.
I know your comment is 2 years old, but it's also because this was filmed at a martial arts school called "Zeus"
