Barrel Stave Bottle Opener - How I make them

This is how I make a bottle cap opener from a whiskey, wine or bourbon barrel. I've been looking for smaller projects to make from barrels and this is just one of the items that is easy to make and makes a great gift that can be personalized.
1) Deconstruct your barrel
2) Remove any nails or screws
3) Remove the metal bands
4) Remove the top and bottom barrel lids
5) Sort your staves into piles based on size
6) Select staves that are thinner and easy to hold in your hand
7) Cut staves to size keeping one section with a metal band
8) Drill a pilot hole for the bottle opener hardware
9) Use a larger drill bit to create a recess for bottle cap opener base
10) Cut metal band to size of stave
11) Drill pilot hole for screw to attach metal band
12) Flush up metal band and grind smooth
13) Apply protective finish - wipe on poly in this case
14) Pop a top!
