Wooden spatula. How to carve and relax at camp? This is by far one of my favourite pastimes especially outdoors. Carving spoons, spatulas or tools that we need is so rewarding. I find that creating something yourself is far more rewarding then shop bought. You not only get to pass some time but you relax and reward yourself with new skills and learn a new craft.
The art of witting goes back centuries and skills like this used to be a Noble and valued craft that most homesteaders relied on. To be able to creat your own utensils was a vital skill to have. Whittling spoons is relatively easy to master but is gives you essential skills needed in more complex tasks. Carving is about technique and knife control this is very important in any type of carving and you gain lots of experience from it. I often just carve for the experience and satisfaction rather then the need to carve.
Once you master how ti handle the knife and get the feel for the material you carving, you will soon realise how easy it is and the rest will come with practice. Imagination will follow and you will soon be carving some amazing designs.Carving is a skill that is at the Center of bushcraft and most outdoorsmen seek to learn and master this skill. In a survival situation carving is a skill that is viral not only to create utensils but hooks, notches and survival implements that could save your life.
