  • The 11th Generation Kindle Paperwhite has a few major updates. It is the first Paperwhite to go beyond a 6 inch screen and now has a 6.8 inch. Page turn speed has been increased by 20% and overall performance by about 40%. This is some serious value for only $139.
    In this review we look at the UI, although our review unit has the old UI. We also look at the Bookstore, Audiobook Store, Playing Audiobooks via Bluetooth, reading manga, and a PDF file.

    I’ve just got mine and can confirm that the screen is crispier and the interface is snappier comparing to the previous model. I particularly noticed higher contrast in this new model. The weight difference is unnoticeable however the larger screen is a huge plus. Warm light is a good addition as well. Overall, very happy and I think it is definitely worth to upgrade.

    After being a dedicated kobo customer for 10 years, and having experienced screen issues with both the kobo Clara HD and libra h2o model, I purchased one of these the other day. I haven't been through all of the device yet, but I can say without a doubt that this thing is solid. The backlighting is even, no shadows or dark spots. The text is crisp and clear. Seems easy to navigate. Fast page turns. My first Kindle and I gotta say, A+ so far

    • @ron4431
      @ron4431 Před 2 lety +12

      I guess a color e-reader is actually the opposite of what an e-reader is. The e-reader aims to provide a paper-like display with the longest battery life possible and something that doesn't affect your eyes especially after spending an entire day in front of monitors and hence most e-readers take this decision to keep things in monochrome.

    • @cortster12
      @cortster12 Před 2 lety +4

      What's wrong with black and white? You don't need color to read. The entire point of an eReader is battery life and something like looks like paper.

I went two weeks just reading a Printed Copy of a Book and it barely dropped about 12% off a Hundred of that. The extra is that it’s Qi Chargeable but that’s more of a extra feature less of a selling point. Point is, if you wanna spring for the Signature then go for it if not then the 5 edition is amazing too. Both are great!!

  • @laurafisherreads
    @laurafisherreads Před 2 lety +41

    This just reinforces what a price-gouge the Oasis is. An extra 0.2" of screen real estate, a few extra LEDs and some faux 'aluminum' backing and almost double the price of the PW5 (in my part of the world, at least).

      Lol, another Oasis-dissing know-nothing. You think screen real estate and tech specs are why some prefer the Oasis? Nah... it's the ability to easily disable the touchscreen and manhandle the thing, read on your back or in any position, because you hold it like an actual book, thumb ON page. The contour for your fingers on the back make your grip that much easier. THIS is what makes the paperwhite a ghetto eReader.

    Is the screen less matte than the Paperwhite 4? One of the selling points of the PPW for me was the almost paper-y texture and genuinely glare-free screen. If the newest has a glossy screen I might just stick to the last model because that's one of the reasons I even got a Kindle in the first place. Would really prefer not to go back to easily smudged and reflective screens when reading.

    My recap for 2021 vs 2018:
    - Bigger screen: for a device dedicated only for reading, this is a huge concern. Keep in mind, the screen is bigger, but the device is not that bigger compared to the old one, the bezels are slimmer.
    - USB C: it's so convenient to use only one type of charger for everything.
    - Warm light: nice to have.

    1. Paperwhite has a brighter and clearer screen. It is more evenly lit which is amazing since i thought my Oasis was really good
    2. Paperwhite chargers MUCH faster. Yes, USB-C makes a big difference.
    3. I still prefer the slightly bigger screen on the Oasis. 7.0” vs 6.8” is noticeable side by side.

It is absurd how Amazon can charge almost double for 32GB. The best suited solution would be expandable storage, but honestly I doubt that they’ll ever do that. I would like the ability to keep all my book files, but also manga and visual novels, that take lots of space in comparison.

    I have been thinking of getting one of these, a coworker has one. When I first got my iPad, I tried reading a few books on it thru an app, and didn’t really like it. I like holding a real book in my hands. But, for portability, the instant gratification of not having to go to the store or order and wait for a book, and less books cluttering up the house, I’m reconsidering. But now I’m stuck on what I should get…

    So... I'm very fond of Kobo. I have an old Kobo. I've been following the unboxings and Reviews you guys make. The software on Kobo is more Open since it allows for Epubs without conversion etc etc.... But this Kindle has shaken my basement! Wow! Such a Fast device! It's almost tablet like. Seriously, what did they do? And forget about processing power, I'm not sure if the 120+ dollars Kobo Sage can keep up with this guy, except on screen size of course. For the price, you can't get anything better. Not that I know of.

      @christopher1800 Před 2 lety

      I’m quite sure actually that the Kobo Sage doesnt keep up… it doesn’t even keep up with my Oasis 2. :). Kobo should really improve their responsiveness and speed on their devices. THe Sage has a 1.8ghz quad-core processor, which should be more than enough. On the other hand, it has a much larger screen, and the e-ink technology can only do so much (larger screen size takes more time to draw the ink). It’d be nice if Amazon came up with a larger screen device, then we could really do a comparison.

      This, so much this. The #1 reason why I was not upset when my Paperwhite died. We must hold the kindles differently to others. I don’t hold in a pinch grip, instead use an open left hand so the thumb could page turn and the little finger supports the device from underneath. Unfortunately this stupid paperwhite design has the power button exactly on that spot. It is likewise a problem using the Amazon kindle stand, you had to very carefully rest it in because that sat on the button. Best loccation ever was the Voyage with a recessed long press button on the back of the device for me - but then Amazon can’t sell you any covers so that is no more.

      So what would be ‘truly new’ in your opinion? What are you hoping for? Technology is still moving forward: e-ink devices with color are here now, you can even write on them. Foldable screens / phones, better camera’s, etc. The hardware in all these computer devices is absolutely amazing already… and at some point there’s no use putting in extra power or more / better camera’s for the majority of users. Computing power is still evolving, with some truly incredible advancements just around the corner (quantum computers), self-learing devices, self-driving cars, etcetera. Of course, those are all iterations of previous tecchnology, but it’s always been like that. I think for many people it’s already quite hard to keep up with all the changes technology imposes on them!

I get that guided view would have to be specially programmed so that each frame can be correctly cropped, and that takes time so not all graphic novels are gonna get it, but the way you phrased this made it seem like they refuse to do it for manga, and I can't think of a good justification for that.
