  • A complete and (mostly) unedited video of the traditional Sunday Organ Recital held at the Southern Counties Organ Festival in Devizes, on Sunday the 2nd of June at two in the afternoon. What better way to celebrate the organ's 70th anniversary in preservation than to hold a spectacular concert, especially with the organ playing in absolutely top form! I have tried to do the organ as much justice as possible with my video but of course, to really experience its versatility and power you had to have been there in person on the day of the concert, the park's acoustics were excellent and really showcased the full extent of the organ's power. My apologies for the sun's glare on camera, I didn't realise this had occurred until after the filming was complete, I have had a play around with the video settings but it still isn't perfect, especially as the video progresses - apologies also for the occasional bit of wind interference. As an aside, both myself and others were pleasantly surprised to see that a fairground organ can still draw a crowd in this day and age - with a large number of enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts alike staying to listen, many for the full duration of the concert. This video and the concert itself is dedicated to the memory of Alan Curry, long time member of the Show Organ Society and helper of White's who sadly passed away earlier this year. Many thanks to everyone involved for staging the concert, Mr. Mayhew for bringing the organ along, Jory Bennett on keyframe duty, Richard Evans and Ian Postlethwaite helping out with the preparation and flyers, and of course Alan Roberts for organising the event in the first place. Sorry if I've missed anyone else!

A couple of corrections on arrangers, "The Last All Clear" was composed by James Tiller but arranged by Louis Blache, Tiller only started arranging in the early 1960's and he composed this march after World War One, "Donauwellen" is a Marenghi book, "The Broken Melody" is 100% Marenghi and still has the original cover on the book.

Thanks very much Peter - I thought I had got them right, a bit embarrassing given the video's captions are now incorrect, lol!

1:29:11 The Dambusters March was a special favourite of Alan Curry (1940-2024) to whom the whole concert was dedicated.

Fascinating - I wish I was there. A big like! BTW you didn't film the audience at all! A pity!

Thank you! I was considering having a couple of shots of the audience but was so absorbed by the concert myself that I later forgot! 🤣

Your introduction says it all. Congratulations on a fine recording of the concert which I'm sure many will enjoy long after the event but you are right, recordings are only an impression. You can't beat hearing the real thing for the full experience.

we have been discussing recently on facebook about the relationship of the jaquard machines and the programming of mechanical organs and sitting here while I scroll through your beautifully organised youtube post I am thinking, well ain't that marvellous, here I am with my little computer mouse and I have THIS at my command !

Indeed, back in the day you'd have to travel to see organs and nowadays you can find just about every organ made here on CZcams! Nothing beats travelling to see them however, they will always be better in person no matter what.

This is the largest of the "Big 3" (The other 2 being the Anderton & Rowland Grand organ & Wonderland) & is reputed to be the largest mechanical organ in the world which it was until recently as there are now organs of recent origin built by Verbeeck most notably the Centenary organ of 114 keys & the famous Victory concertorgan of 118 keys ( which is currently the largest in the world) Both of these are unlike Whites are fully chromatic throughout & contain more pipes ( i am not sure of the exact number does anyone know the exact number?) I know some do not like these modern marvels but Whites is STILL the worlds largest historical mechanical organ & will never be rivalled.

There should be 4. What about "The Golden Marenghi", Frank Lythgoe's Marenghi. That's my favorite British Fairground Organ, although I also adore the other 3 you mentioned.

Preston's Gavioli is larger than White's. It remains 112 scale has some more pipes than this one, making it the largest Gavioli organ in the world. There is also a 112 Gaudin fairground organ in Paris, a 110 Gavioli in North America and a 105 Gavioli in Marseille, France. These fairground organs are all chromatic from bass to top notes, and are the real giants of their type.

@@jorybennett5932 There are organs of recent origin that are even larger mostly built by Verbeeck most notably the centenary 110 key & the Victory 118 key & another 125 key in the US & the 125 key Verbeeck/Gaudin Which are the largest in the world The ones you mention are the largest Historical examples.
