    This was an unexpectedly spiritual experience at the end, which I appreciated. It certainly helped my morning.
    I've always wondered about the techniques artists use in their preliminary sketches to create illusions, so I appreciate the insight too.

    Hi! I an art student from Brazil and even though I've learned all that, I still really enjoy your take on teaching it. Your Pugilatore in Riposo video also helped me a lot on an essay I did about it, really useful since I can't have the luxury of actually seeing it live. Thanks!

    You guys are an awesome pair of artistic geniuses narrating the marvelous art since time began. Jesus Christ and the Last Supper and the vanishing pointing is amazing! I so appreciate you both Dr Zucker and Dr Beth Harris in explaining and teaching us culture and knowledge. xo :)

    Another Question, The horizontal line I understand but the point that you put outside the image that can be put anywhere so how do you determine how far away from the center of your image or painting that you're going to put that reference point if it's closer it'll change the angle of those diagonal lines then it would be if it was farther away

    • @pedroedsos
      @pedroedsos Před 3 lety +2

      You need to know more concepts to understand it, but its distance to the central vanishing point is equal to the distance of the observer to the imaginary frontal plane where everything is projected and where true measures are placed.
      I teach/tutor on this and I'm accepting students ;)

    This is why it's easier for artists to reflect whether the world is stationary and flat or a spinning sphere.

    @ Smarthistory. art, history, conversation.
    do you happen to have a link or reference to Brunelleschi's portrait shown @2:29 ?

    • @smarthistory-art-history
      @smarthistory-art-history  Před 6 lety +1

      Not off hand though I assume it came from a later and rather lavish Vasari - The Lives.

    • @HamzaHakimi
      @HamzaHakimi Před 6 lety +2

      Thanks! I found one at Cornell University Library, Rare and Manuscript Collections, but wasn't the exact same one here which actually makes me wonder if Vasari created two different versions of Brunelleschi's profile portrait in his book. They both look almost the same, but the one in this video is a wee bit darker in colour, and different in style.

    Does the vanishing point always have to be in the middle? Would there be a formula for stacking this sketch in other words two Vanishing points on one piece of art? For example Rolling Hills this technique wouldn't apply or maybe it would and I just don't know how to apply it.

    • @pedroedsos
      @pedroedsos Před 3 lety

      The center one is there to simulate where are you looking at, hence refers to the the VP of the perpendicular lines to any frontal plane. Any parallel lines have the same VP, so there are infinite possibilities. Check out 3 point perspective.

    What's wrong with computers and Photoshop? Digital art is just as valid as traditional art.

    • @smarthistory-art-history
      @smarthistory-art-history  Před 6 lety +6

      I am pretty sure we didn't say something was wrong with computer., Further, I am unclear what your question has to do with the history of linear perspective?

    • @abbiepanda9367
      @abbiepanda9367 Před 6 lety +2

      Never mind I think I interpreted it wrong because in the beginning you said that it was not Photoshop on a computer but real pen and ink and I thought you meant it wasn't drawn digitally but now I realize you meant it wasn't a photoshopped image. I am so so so sorry for wasting your time. I love your videos and they are so helpful thank you!
