    This is the system I user to sharpen ALL my knives. Any questions about this build?

      Will this work for recurves?

    • @TyrellKnifeworks
      @TyrellKnifeworks  Před 11 měsíci +1

      @@thewaylonandjoeshow9540 sure, it’s all about how you move the blade across the guide. For recurves like kukri’s, you just need to be a bit more careful with your movements and follow the blade. For really aggressive curves like karambits you just use the edge of the belt.

    • @addictchris2503
      @addictchris2503 Před 10 měsíci

      I was wondering how you address blades of differing thickness? The clamps look like they can take a pretty thick blade, but upon thinking about it it seems like, if the blade is aligned with and centered perfectly in the clamp for a nice thin kitchen knife, that a big bowie with a 1/4" thick spine would be off center in the clamp and then you end up with a different bevel angle on each side. Would you then have to sharpen one side at a time, turning the blade around in between?

    • @TyrellKnifeworks
      @TyrellKnifeworks  Před 10 měsíci

      @@addictchris2503 The clanps are spring loaded and each blade you put in centers them again. It’s how all blade holders work.

    • @addictchris2503
      @addictchris2503 Před 10 měsíci

      @@TyrellKnifeworks Actually I just modeled the WEN blade holders in CAD. Unlike the WE holder where both sides of the clamp move, with the WEN holder half of the clamp is fixed with the inside face aligned through the center of the holder rod. The other half of the clamp is the only side that moves, so the thicker the blade gets, the more the blade edge moves away from center toward one side and you definitely get a slightly different angle on each side. The GOOD news is that you need a pretty thick blade for that difference to really matter. On a 1/4" thick blade the difference works out to a bit over one degree from one side to the other. You wouldnt notice that difference by eye, and on thinner blades even less.
      Since the edge is offset to one side by half the blade thickness, when you flip it to do the other side the edge moves a total of one full blade thickness, so if it really matters you can simply put a shim on the side of the holder bar with the movable clamp the exact thickness of the blade to account for the difference. 1/4" blade, 1/4" shim. Easy peasy.
      Its not going to stop me from building the jig and using it. Its still a brilliant jig :)

    Really like this attachment, especially for larger knives.
    Most of the compound abrasives tend to run pretty cool anyway, which is good because they all tend to die a horrible death with too much moisture on them.

    I feel like these attachments help a beginner learn the feel of doing it on their own. But a professional or someone selling knives, should be able to manage a simple task like this freehand. But it's a very cool tool for the beginner

    • @TyrellKnifeworks
      @TyrellKnifeworks  Před 10 měsíci +1

      You’re not a knifemaker I assume? A “simple” task of attaining exactly a 15 or 17 degree angle precisely along the entire blade isn’t something that’s easy to do. Most professionals sharpen with machine like Tormek’s which are around $800 or a Wicked Edge which over $1k, yet they all have 2x72 grinders. This attachment is actually for the medium to advanced knifemaker. A beginner may not even have a 2x72. Thanks for watching

    Nice system, and of course there's still the possibility of user error (at least for me!) since the grinding angle appears to be regulated by the friction of the WEN attachment on the horizontal bar and the angle set by eye. Can't think of a way around that, but you obviously get great, repeatable results.

    • @TyrellKnifeworks
      @TyrellKnifeworks  Před 10 měsíci

      Ha, don’t worry about the friction on the bar, that’s completely irrelevant and doesn’t affect the performance. The end result is excellent and very easy to achieve. It was good enough to pass my JS presentation tests. 😉. Thanks for watching, Bryson!
