Lee, the lead vocalist on this track is Steve Winwood, not Jim Capaldi, who did sing leads on other Traffic tunes. My personal fave in the band was Dave Mason, who left the band to go solo. Steve Winwood had his first professional gig aged 14 in his brother's jazz band, playing piano in a pub with his back to the audience so they didn't see how young he was! From there he and his brother joined the Spencer Davis Group, still only 15, and had huge success. Catch them live, particularly his version of Georgia. Then he formed Traffic, which was a mix of pop, psychedelia, rock and jazz. From there he joined Blind Faith, then he went solo. One of the greatest voices ever, a songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist, he's sold over 50 million records. Try also the psychedelic Paper Sun and the stunning ballad No Face, No Name, No Number.

Traffic is a really great band. Not particulary "famous" or "popular", but with a core following and highly respected by other musicians. Traffic was highly influenced by traditional and historical musical forms, with influences like medieval, folk, blues, country. As a big fan of Jethro Tull, I then became a big fan of Traffic, both being a kind of "historical-prog". For their "medieval" accustic sound, listen to the great song "John Barleycorn Must Die", it's strange and mysterious, haunting, somehow both modern and ancient.

Steve Winwood was only 19 when this was released. He is one of the most talented “artist” of our generation!! I was very young when this came out, but became a huge fan of Steve, Traffic, and Blind Faith in my teens.
Steve started with Blind Faith at the age of 15!!
I have seen Steve play several times live and have tickets for this Summer as well as tickets to see Dave Mason on his current tour.
    Another great reaction Lee!

Ned from Spain here to say you picked a classic but these guys get better with each LP. From spacey psych and acid to jazz and spooky folk music. Singer and leader Steve Winwood started as a 15 year old prodigy with Spencer Davis Group and could play numerous instruments. The late drummer Jim Capaldi was a superb unique player and wrote and sang too. Guitarist / singer Dave Mason was in and out the group and wrote some of their hits. Chris Wood on sax and flute added a jazzy flavor to their sound. You're gonna dig this.

In 84' I was 16 years old and my first garage band was murdering this song daily, but we had a blast doing it and I just knew that any day I would be a rock star. Fast forward to today and I've been working for the railroads for the past 33 years, but we've tightened up the band. We play the local bars on the weekends. What we do not have on a set list is this. It's time for the boy's and girl (my wife handles the lead vocals) to learn a new song

My recently dead wife when she was 18-20 lived in Marlow England. She got to know the drummer of this band quite well. He was the town drunk and she a NATO brat slinging suds. Capaldi’s shine was seriously fading between 86-88 & Winwood was riding high.
She would tell me of tales when his Brazilian wife would come into the pub and berate for being useless.
During the “stroke era” 1/8/23 - 7/29/23 I would play Capaldi’s performance at the R&R hall of fame induction. And she giggle & then tell me a story in Omaha, Motley Crue & an unreasonably attractive 16 year old girl. Dimepieces are rare.

If you like this...may I suggest the group Quicksilver Messenger Service. The song Fresh Air (studio version.) I've requested this to dozens of reactors and no one has ever played it. 😢😊

Great response. If you get the chance check out the reconstituted Traffic set from Woodstock 94. Also includes some tunes from the Spencer David group

Good track, I was a bit too young when it came out and I don't remember it.

That was Steve Winwood on vocals!

This was recorded in late 1967, as the psych movement was dying down and giving way to bluesier and folkier trends in British rock and pop (Traffic were one of the first bands who undertook the cliche 'getting it together in the country' prior to recording this album). This actually worked in Traffic's favor because their attempts at Beatles-esque psyche were never that good, plus it played to Steve Winwood's strengths as a songwriter and singer. And let's face it, Steve Winwood is the main reason this band was so special.

"Alone Together" is a great album by Dave Mason.

I like this whole album, it’s one of my old favourites, although it has a variety of different kinds of songs on it. As for The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys (from a later album), well, I think it used to be popular, but somehow it didn’t seem to age well, and by now people don’t seem to like it so much. I like it enough to listen to it occasionally, but I wouldn’t call it a favourite.

Between this and Low Spark, the band lost their lead guitarist, continued as a trio for a while, split up, reformed, relocated to the US, added three new members, swapped them for the Muscle Shoals rhythm section and generally turned into something entirely different.

Love this Band…great mix of jazz and rock! One of the better fission bands out there! You didn’t like Low Spark…you’re crazy!
