    In "Captain's Holiday," Picard takes a break,
    To Risa he travels, a rest to partake.
    Leaving the ship, to seek some peace,
    Hoping his worries and duties will cease.
    But not this time. Adventure awaits, even in rest,
    A tale of intrigue, a treasure to quest.
    Riker’s asks Picard: A Horga’hn to find,
    But it's really saying. you want some "sexy time".
    Vash appears, with secrets untold,
    A woman of mystery, daring and bold.
    Together they chase, the Tox Uthat’s might,
    A weapon of time, hidden from sight.
    A Ferengi pursues right from the start.
    Seeking the treasure, with greed in his heart.
    Time-traveling foes make plans that intertwine.
    Their intentions revealed, in the depths of time.
    With Vash by his side, danger they face,
    Uncovering secrets, in a dangerous race.
    Picard and Vash, their wits combined,
    Outsmart their foes, in the nick of time.
    Picard is no Indiana Jones, but I found it fun.
    Though Alex and Josh didn't like this one.
    But here’s to the captain, his well-earned distraction,

      Yeah, I don’t get the dislike for this one at all after the reaction. I always enjoy watching this episode for its laid back, fun atmosphere, and giving the captain a different love interest and a fun adventure. I literally have almost no issues with the episode. Even the way Vash comes on to Picard is meant to look a bit forced and honey as she is trying to play him, but also mildly interested in him, and you can never tell for sure, which may be one reason Picard is almost interested too.
      This episode for me is like watching Golden Girls reruns. Similar time period of filming, similar color tones, relaxing atmosphere, low stakes fun. I can put it on in the background if it’s on streaming or tv and enjoy it. Nothing more, nothing less. I just don’t get the hate for it compared to some trull bad episodes along the way, some truly boring ones, and some good ones that only hold up on their first or second viewing before the surprise wears off for the long haul.

Especially over 30 years of watching these two episodes, as well as so many others, dozens and dozens of times as they come on tv or streaming. I can’t follow that logic in any way. I sort of predicted your reaction, based on your opinions about Deja Q.
    While Deja Q is significantly better to me, I've always really enjoyed Captain's Holiday - and never took it as some kind of serious storytelling moment in Trek history. Simply an upfront sidestep for some levity and mild character support/building.
    I don't know that I would consider this a "comedy" episode - but more of a light-hearted adventure with wonderful moments from Picard and Riker. I don't have a problem with the mischievous romantic interest, and I don't think it's out of character for Picard to have a little fun here and there. I like Vash quite a bit - and I think she pulls off the role of selfish but endearing quite effectively.
    If you've paid attention from the beginning of TNG, you should have picked up on the fact that Picard used to be quite the ladies man back in the day (it's well established at this point in S3, I think) - and in this episode he opted to have a little fun as he deceived her with a clean conscience - as he was already on to her type and most likely knew what to expect from her.
    Just two people enjoying themselves during a mission of importance to both of them.
    Your dislike is obviously fine - but your reaction is a little over-the-top and, as such, comes off as emotionally biased. I could make some easy guesses as to why, but I'll spare you :)
    Anyway, it's nice to see a pattern forming - which will make it easier to brace for certain upcoming episodes! I can think of at least a couple of pure "comedy" episodes coming quite a bit later on.

I don't mind Sovak being an annoying creep because that's what he is there for. I also don't mind the Vash/Picard ship so much because I like Vash and Picard is first drawn in by the mystery, not because they have instant chemistry. L O L. 😂 People’re entitled to their differing opinions on shows, franchises, and particular episodes! That’s just how entertainment and fiction work. There are episodes I just thought were meh or overrated that I remembered you guys seeming to love.
    I think a good part of why I enjoy this story is not only do I find it funny, but I precisely don’t need to take it or the ending seriously. It’s a break from a run of extremely high stakes drama, a personal vacation that isn’t quite that, except for someone like Picard. Kinduva silly holodeck side adventure for just him, but on an actual alien planet that’s functionally a resort.
    This is ultimately how the Ferengi always are: a not really scary antagonist, which probably is what made the writers fit them in here.
    I am kinda curious now if you guys have ever reacted to any episode very differently from each other..

    First, I'm not someone who gets all butt-hurt if you disagree with me about a tv show/movie, but... I kinda liked this one! To be clear, it's not in my top 10 for the season, but I thought it was fun. I liked Vash, and the cheesy Ferengi. I had no problem with their chemistry and thought she might be a fun recurring character. Yeah, I know she's no Beverly Crusher, but I liked her. In fairness, the overall idea was decent, but it definitely fell apart towards the end. But it wasn't enough for me to dislike the episode.

    @derekm79 Před měsícem +10

    Harsh to say this Ferengi is as bad as the ones from The Last Outpost. He was greedy, devious, and silly, which have become the defining characteristics of the Ferengi. Those first 3 Ferengi were just something else.

    • @Bagofsoup
      @Bagofsoup Před měsícem

      I enjoy this Ferengi quite a bit, and feel he plays his role perfectly, as the Ferengi are being developed. There are so many different species in Star Trek, especially to come in the future as the different series expand, and the Ferengi really grow into their particular roles. If they don’t like this guy here, I wonder how they will do with future one off ferengi’s that have similar peculiarities. I guess we will find out very sooner than later!

    • @Bagofsoup
      @Bagofsoup Před měsícem

      Yep, for anyone who’s watched Star Trek long enough, it’s hard to even consider what we got in the last outpost as Ferengi. So much evolution from then to now and well beyond to DS9. We almost have to jump through a number of mental hoops to explain away the Ferengi in the last outpost, to what they become here and later on. And as people have said many times already, what’s so ironic is that one of those first three Ferengi actors in the last outpost with their horrible introduction, actually goes on to become the main Ferengi actor and play the most notable long running Ferengi in the current history of Star Trek. Quite ironic, not to mention that future character’s relationship to the actor playing Sovak here and any other characters that actor might play later…

I happen to think this is one of the better stories - the captain goes on a holiday to relax, and instead has an adventure and a bad girl triste (sometimes, you know, you just really don't need chemistry - 80s, remember? Just a willing partner) and comes back more relaxed than ever. Holidays never go as planned, but even so it still worked. He must have got something worked out - he came back a new man. ;)
