I studied film editing in uni for my minor and did trailers and I can confirm- there is a formula! There's a specific order for theatrical trailers (around 2.5 mins long)... for teasers (1 minute) the formula is different. While editing trailers for class I spent a lot of time finding music to fit the cut and it's what Brett and Eddy pointed out: music that follows that "rollercoaster" flow. It's cool to see Twoset cover this from a musical standpoint!

In trailers for action movies the intention is to create a quick synopsis of what you can expect to see and to create a buildup through the use of music while editing the movie-cuts to fit the beat of the music they're using.
The way they create trailers changes over the years so if you go back and watch older trailers from the 80's and the 90's you'll see that they're built up with a different formula. The current formula is very much used because it's effective to create a feeling and get attention. The narrator voice that was common in the 80s and 90s have been replaced by the music.

The thing about pop music and music in film trailers, is that it always has oversight by big executives who want to make money. The executives prefer to make their singers/producers/directors produce music and movies that are bland, unoriginal, follow a particular style, and that will have a definite return on investment. Therefore, the music/movies they produce all has a sugary blandness to it.
The music and movies that really inspire are less preferred to be produced by big companies, because they're worried it'll flop. So you just get tons of bland, boring media that will definitely make money.

@@120rikeshlawoju2 Well... Yeah. You end up getting really boring art that has nothing to say for itself, other than "You might be entertained for a bit listening/watching this once."
They're certainly not the type of "Watch this film and your life will change" levels of good. Those sorts of films only really exist when someone is willing to part with more money than expected, take risks in producing art, and are willing to eat into their profits to produce something good, unique, and that has something to say for itself.
I think everyone has seen how terrible some of the new Marvel films are. How many times do you think Marvel fans have seen Eternals, or Thor: Love and Thunder? Once? Maybe twice? Most people will think, "There I know the story now. No need to rewatch." That's certainly what I thought after watching them. Or even the Fast and Furious franchise, so many of those films have very low IMDB or Rotten Tomatoes ratings, but they still get made because they make money.
They're the types of safe films that a studio can regularly pump out and will make consistent money for the studio and production companies. But they have absolutely nothing to say for themselves, no moral, no changing the way you think, just entertainment with great CGI, or big booms and fast cars.

  • @clubedanarrativa5603
    @clubedanarrativa5603 Před rokem +48

Hi TwoSet, filmmaking student here to give my semi-professional take on it!
Movie trailers are usually divided in two; Either they use the theme of the movie (like Harry Potter or Dune), and that's usually when the soundtrack is recognizable and popular enough that people would know what the trailer is about once they hear it.
Or they use a cult song, usually from the 70s or 80s. Sometimes a trailer can use a very popular song (like Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody), or a song can get popular because of the trailer (like Guardians of The Galaxy's Hooked on a Feeling).
I think the "pop song" type can go really well if the song either fits the tone of the movie, or if they use a song that's already in the movie. Guardians of The Galaxy do it really well because they use songs that are in the movie (Hooked on a Feeling, In The Meantime, Since You Been Gone). And the whole trilogy is centered around music, because the main character has a connection with 70s music that's really important to his personality. So, it makes sense to include these songs in the trailer.
Another example is the first Dune. They used Pink Floyd's Breathe in the trailer, and that worked well, not just because the song has like, this epic and fantasy vibe, but also because it's a reference to the canceled 1970s Dune movie, wich Pink Floyd was going to do an album based off.
I think the bad use of pop music is when you try to fit the lyrics more than the period or tone. A bad example of this is Suicide Squad using Bohemian Rhapsody, a song that has nothing to do with the movie except for some of the lyrics matching what's happening in the trailer. That can make a trailer look more like a videoclip than a summary of the tone of the movie.
Anyways, i've seen trailers using classical music before, i'm producing a movie with a lot of Beethoven in it, a good example of classical in movies is A Clockwork Orange, that has Beethoven's entire 9th Symphony in it because the main character Alex identifies with the composer.
Anyways, hope you guys the best! Stay talented!
P.S: A lot of "tricks" in trailers are not just "haha i gotta stay on that pattern", they are also convenient. The whole "beat mixed with action in the trailer" is good to highlight the music to the person who's watching. The "silence to highlight certain line" is not just used for jokes, but also dramatic moments, because it's meant for you to understand that you have to pay attention to the dialogue now. It can also happen in the use of music in the actual movie (The music plays when the characters are silence, and then it goes down or stops once they start talking)
P.S 2: Very funny to hear you mocking the build-ups in trailer when a lot classical pieces i've heard share that same "Needs to grow and get more intense" trope. Ode to Joy starts very slowly and it just grows. Blue Danube too. Bolero de Ravel too.
PS3: "And beautiful sky" line is VERY relevant in the specific movie (Guardians 3) and it's said a lot. It's not just "some line"

Like it’s worked for this long, and not many people are analyzing them as deeply as you guys are lol. Having the music always build up to the title card usually makes people remember the release date and title more, and silencing the music for one liners is good because if they play music while people are talking how will you be able to hear what they are saying haha

Such a bold claim. Definitely not "what trailers are". Watch the official trailer of "Ran" 1985 for instance - (as the comparison movies here are action too.) it gives me goosebumps. Although there is 5-7 other newer versions at least. Still, nearly all are just awasome scenery + awasome soundtrack and that's it. The movie is still better than all of that trash shown here too. Or just watch any other trailer for actually non pop culture garbage blockbuster that have an actual artistic value. Don't settle yourself to be dominated by shallow pop culture, and than said "that's it all what is possible", PLEASE.

Trailers used to be different not _that_ long ago. Like, look at Honest Trailers still following the older formula, before the whole pop song cover trend became a thing. And I bet you everyone recognizes the pattern, whether consciously or subconsciously. And before the "epic trailer voice" trailer was a thing, trailers used to be different yet again.
So "that's what trailers are" is just not true. There are fashions and developments to these things and at some point more and more people will tire of this formula and we'll need something new. Personally, I've already been dead tired of this formula for two years or so. I'm sure people who watch more movies were sick of it way before that.

    • @FreePigeon

It's because the psychologists that these studios have hired have told them what will 'hook' your brain into the trailer and make you pay attention. Same as pop music having the same 'catchy' tunes. It's psychological manipulation. If you look at old trailers from before this formula was discovered, they don't do any of it. Look at the trailer for Carousel, Alien, Lady & the Tramp (1955 Original), Bridge Over the River Kwai. Basically any movie trailer from back when people had attention spans longer than 5 seconds.

He was one of 9 victims, a brilliant 14 y.o piano prodigy, and his life was taken away from him before he could even live it. To give him a voice, could you take a minute or two in one of your next videos to acknowledge his beautiful interpretations, or his own (sadly last) composition, in his rememberance? His name is Andrija Cikic. I as so many others are devastated about his loss, he had a brilliant career in front of him that was cruelly stolen from him.
