“He’s a Pirate” is great and all but there are so many underrated songs from those soundtracks like “Up is Down” and “One Day” which will just hit you in the feels. Also Davy Jones’ theme, not underrated but I felt the need to include it.
Plus the "Marry Me" Suite is amazing❤😭

Lion king Mufasa's death theme is EPIC. Hans Zimmer actually wrote it as a requem for his father, which makes it a 10000 times more beautiful and for someone like me that lost a father too, makes it seem so private. He's a genius.

Song is called Stampede , when I was in high school our band took a trip to Walt Disney World, during which we got to rehearse this song with a Disney conductor. As a brass player its one of the most fun experiences I’ve had playing an instrument.
The Lion King is overrated in every aspect. Listen to the soundtracks that Menken and Ashman wrote: Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin. They're all so much better.

Yeah, they barely listened to the songs. And one single 2-minutes piece is not enough to value a soundtrack. Not even listening to it alone.
Putting Titanic, The Godfather, Schindler List and so others so low is criminal. It was such a shallow and poor analysis.
Also, compiling all Harry Potter, Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean soundtracks together is hard to analyze, mainly HP because they had different compsers.
Yeah if we're talking about the soundtracks within the context of the movie, 2001 is certainly S tier.
to be fair, the jaws soundtrack is just a less good version of dvorak's 9th symphony. low effort and sad.
@@benfox6292 You've clearly never actually listened to the Jaws soundtrack or all of Dvorak 9 and only know of the 2-note motif that connects the two. Guess what? Those two notes are the only thing that is similar between Dvorak 9 and Jaws. I guess you forgot about the entire rest of the symphony, and the entire rest of the soundtrack. Apart from those two notes, they are nothing alike.

As an amateur Tolkien nerd, it is fitting that the LOTR movies have incredible music considering that in the Silmarillion, the entire world is created through an act of music.
Although I could never get past the first few chapters of that book, the creation narrative is only second to the one in Narnia imo. Masterfully told.

@@MusicalJackknife 😅I'm gonna assume you're not old enough to drive. Masterfully? Even as a teen one should be able to notice Lewis's dull prose, characterization and intrusive hand holding. It's a great idea, fairly compelling at first. The execution, however, is levels below Tolkien's. The comparison is almost comical.

My second sentence was in reference to the subject of the first, i.e. Tolkien's work. Still, Lewis was a master in his own right, obviously both wrote works for a range of different audiences. The Narnia books aren't going to have the same tone or narrative depth as the Space Trilogy, and though even that can be a slog at times, Tolkien has things like the Silmarillon which often reads like the driest Old Testament chronicles.

Obviously LOTR is S tier but seeing Interstellar right up there with it makes me happy. The music in the spinning docking scene took that from being really cool to absolutely mind-blowing tears streaming down my face incredible.

I think it would be really interesting to hear their ranking of iconic Disney songs. Although I could take or leave the movie, I absolutely love Colors of the Wind because of the orchestration.

My favorite movie soundtrack has to be Interstellar, but tbh I just love Han Zimmer's style. He gives life to the movies. I actually saw him live in Prague and it was incredible.

Yes!! I also loved his Dune soundtrack.
The only one I really disagreed with was Star Wars. I think people don't really realize how amazing of a job Williams did when composing for all those movies, it's kind of crazy how many tiny details are in the scores of each movie, and built into the themes. The shows all have amazing scores as well, regardless of whether the show is any good.
Its not on the level of lord of the rings though for example
The Pirates of the Carribean soundtracks were actually composed by three different composers. In the first movie Klaus Badelt created the theme, which was followed up by Hans Zimmer in the next three movies, and later Geoff Zanelli composed the music for part 5. In my opinion the soundtrack of each single movie is quite distinct, and my favourites are part 2 and 5.
Really, those scores were done by about 30 people. The amount of "additional music" credits on the CD booklets is ridiculous. But that was (and is) just part of the Media Ventures/Remote Control MO, which will either annoy you or you don't really care one way or another.
Zimmer composed some of main themes for the first film and oversaw the rest of Klaus's work. He didn't do it fully and isn't credited because he was doing another film that legally didn't let him work on any other projects for during that time

The Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack reminds me of the one played on The Gladiator movie🤔

The Harry Potter movies have pretty great soundtracks imo, I particularly like the soundtrack of the 3rd movie and "Lily's Theme" from Deathly Hallows (it's just sad and haunting). I think the composer is Alexandre someone

In "King's Speech", the Beethoven was used in several ways; it was a steady, slow rhythm that he could follow, it was psychologically steadying to him when he was speaking while stressed, and finally, when he delivers the entire speech, and the theme is allowed to develop the way Beethoven wrote it, it helps show the scope of what the King has just done.
Yeah it really tells his story.
I know it’s not mainstream, but one of my favourite OSTs is “Pride and Prejudice” (2005version), while I love most of the pieces for its calm nature, I totally fell in love with how the composer Dario Marianelli used Purcell’s “Abdelazar” and made a violin version out of it, giving the dance scene in the movie beautiful emotions ♡
“Dawn” definitely is my favourite piece from the soundtrack 👏🏼
I remember watching this loads when I was little because my mom loved the music and the story and my dad loved the story and cinematography. I've never not liked it no matter how many times I've watched it. Such a masterpiece.

I listen to P&P 2005 OST on a regular basis. Itsone of thes best soundtracks to help me when I'm working on homework and/or writing papers.

The whole album from “The theory of everything” is great. My personal favourite is “a model of the universe” I definitely think it’s worth listening.

I saw Joe Hisaishi live at concert and he is amazing. It was studio Ghibli anniversary or something and when he played Nausicca I cried. He and Hans Zimmer are my two most fav composers for movie music

I’m a sucker for anything Danny Elfman. The way he captures the whimsical nature of the Tim Burton’s films he composes for is so on point. Also Patrick Doyle’s score for the 2015 Cinderella is so superb, I could (and sometimes do) listen to it all day.

You missed two of the most beautiful (in my musically untrained opinion) soundtracks of all times: Finale from Dragonheart and That Next Place from Meet Joe Black
When they played Finale in the new Dragonheart movie, I honestly teared up a bit. Dragonheart has such a special place in my heart and hearing the theme from the first movie again during the end of a modern DragonHeart movie that I really enjoyed was a pleasant experience

Meet Joe Black was the first soundtrack I ever owned because it was so amazing and inspiring to me! Love the Everywhere Freesia and Fifth Ave tracks as well, but all so perfect!

I feel like Schindler's List soundtrack and the Godfather soundtrack should have been higher up. In the context of the film Williams' and Rota's score works wonderfully.
Rota is one of the best movie composers of all time (the trumpet solo in "La Strada" is pure beauty and more generally, his music fits awesomely the neorealistic Italian movies) and I agree that the Godfather soundtrack is underrated here. Same for Schindler's List : it is Perlman who is playing !
I think "2001, a space odyssey" should be higher too because of the profound meaning of the soundtrack which highlights the silence of the space (there is no place for ambiance music, and I think Kubrick magnified that with his choice of music).
Schindler's list has such a beautiful soundtrack, really makes the movie what it is!

The Godfather Main Theme is actually a different piece than the one they listened to and it's brilliant. "I Have But One Heart" is also a beautiful song. It definitely should be higher on the list.
Y'all should really hear the "How To Train Your Dragon" orchestral compositions by John Powell, they're absolutely amazing, and a very good series too, would recommend

I love JOhn Powells bourne trilogy. You can’t say all repetitive music sucks and Ravels Bolero is a masterpiece in the same breath.

I was glad to see that Morricone made your list (Cinema Paradiso)...if you do another assessment of soundtracks in the future I recommend also throwing Morricone's "The Mission" (Gabriel's Oboe) and "Once Upon a Time in the West" (main theme) into the mix. Dario Marianelli is a great composer…loved his Pride and Prejudice work. As an overall soundtrack that selected great classical pieces, Master and Commander On the Far Side of the World is beautiful.

Yessss, HTTYD is in my opinion the best animated kid's series, the music is amazing the story and character development is AMAZING and the world building and I love how it really grew with the audience, I remember watching it as the first time as a little kid and as the series has developed it's matured with me and my friends (something frozen failed at cough cough)

The original Bond theme is from 1962, which then got slightly changed in most films to fit the shooting locations and the mood of the film. The best version is the "The Name's Bond... James Bond" by David Arnold played at the end of Casino Royale, which then was used for the following films, because none of the composers thought they could make it any better.

2001: A Space Odyssey is known for the Richard Strauss "Also Sprach Zarathustra" and the Johann Strauss "On The Beautiful Blue Danube", but the Khachaturian and Ligeti music in the movie is really phenomenal.
I think those classic pieces were supposed to be temporary fillers but Kubrik liked them so much with the movie he left them there. One important thing to remember about the Zarathustra work is that there are 9 sections and this first one is called "Dawn" (of man).

The Theory of Everything soundtrack was composed by the late Johann Johansson, specifically for the film. His superpower was that he was a real composer, who always wrote music that could stand on its own while still fitting the scene. Died far too early, and is sorely missed…
the loss of such a brilliant composer was so tragic. i remember being completely in awe of the arrival soundtrack and so excited to see what projects he would be part of next. he left the world too soon 💔
But the "Arrival of the birds" piece comes from a different soundtrack: "Les ailes pourpres: Le mystère des flamants" it was done by the The Cinematic Orchestra for a 2008 documentary on flamingos by Disney nature.

@@witchysongbird I hadn't known that, thanks! Please attribute this to my undying love of Johannsson's work; I cried for two days when I heard he'd died. The works that have been released since then have expanded his known contributions to music, which was always both simple and complex in a way that I still cannot describe. I was so happy to see him live on the Orphee tour though; one of the best concerts I've ever attended.

The thing about Howard Shore's score (LOTR ❤) is that he really worked closely with Peter Jackson and developed the music together with them shooting it.
Of course, I'm glad you put my personal favourite composers up (a lot of John Williams, Hayo Miyazaki and Hans Zimmer) ❤

Just want to point out that the composer for a lot of iconic Ghibli films was Joe Hisaishi; Miyazaki was the film maker.

‘Your hands are cold’ always gives me chills. How they made like 2 mins of Mr Darcy doing nothing but walking towards the camera so emotional is genuinely impressive.
I think personally Shindler's List should be higher up because the music makes the movie so much more sad then it already is. Also it's got multiple awards for the soundtrack as well.

I actually do agree with a lot of the choices you guys made, but I’m absolutely shook that when it came time to decide for The Lion King, you guys completely bypassed Hans Zimmer’s amazing original score. That score gives me goosebumps every time and I would’ve loved to have heard you guys debate over that as opposed to just the songs in the movie.

Stampede is one of the single greatest pieces of music ever written for film. that single piece of music should put lion king in the very top spot. im not even a 'disney adult' and i can say that with crystal clarity of mind.
So many great Hans Zimmers songs on that score. His father passed around that time that inspired those epic pieces.

For me, the award for most beautiful soundtrack moments goes to LOTR. However, the award for the soundtrack that best adapts to the various moments of its movie has to be Star Wars. Most action movies just blast the main title theme whenever the main character shows up or does anything remotely interesting. John Williams just weaves the character’s theme into whatever music he has already established for the scene. The Star Wars soundtrack tells the story of Star Wars, with all its emotional nuances, almost as well as the actual movies.

My personal favorite is the cello solo in episode 4 when Luke and Ben discover the wrecked Jawa transport and Luke rushes home. It perfectly captures Luke's frantic despiration in the moment.
You mean the cello solo on the Force Theme that gets reused for the moment Rey catches the lightsaber in Episode VII? That’s one of my favorites too.
Don't get me wrong, both are extremely solid. However, the lotr theme adapts and evolves even better to the story. Not only are the themes used to portray the thematic elements, but they also evolve with the plot. For example the theme for the fellowship becomes grander the more people join until it bursts into its complete form when the fellowship is fully assembled. Star wars has some good themes, however, at least in the later movies they have become more and more superficially used.
SO HAPPY to see The Theory of Everything on this list. I love Jóhann Jóhansson (I was actually was listening to his work today lmao) and the movie soundtrack is my favourite of all time. Every single piece is amazing and I’m actually learning Arrival of the Birds on the piano. Although it was originally not the movie, the rest of the soundtracks are gold.
One of the first movie scores I fell in love with was Dance With Wolves. Just love this French Horns and the orchestration is perfection.
For Shrek, they should have used the original soundtrack composed by John Powell and Henry Gregson-Williams. That opening theme is hauntingly beautiful
'Ride the Dragon' is at *least* A tier.
For me princess mononoke should be at least as high as spirited away... It's Hisaishi going out of his usual piano led music and it's so memorable for that. It's incredibly subjective though - It's just my favorite myazaki movie and it definitely colors my appreciation of the soundtrack.
The Legend of Ashitaka theme outclasses every other Ghibli soundtrack by a fair mile

You should listen to his album Orpheé! Specifically Flight from the City, it’s the most beautiful minimalistic piece I’ve ever heard. 6 minutes go by so fast when I listen to it

Yep- the theme song for the Theory of Everything is the Arrival of the Birds by the Cinematic Orchestra. It was written well before the film came out, and is one of my favourite pieces of all time. Definitely S tier!

I am not 100% sure but I think that this soundtrack was written for a Disney produced documentary about flamingos - „The Crimson Wing: Mystery of the Flamingos” so that should be the movie taken under consideration in here. I definitely recommend listening to „Transformation” by The Cinematic Orchestra - it’s like a variation with some flare. ;)

I almost rioted over Morricone erasure until I saw Cinema Paradiso. But you still should have ranked “The Mission” because what it did was phenomenal. The soundtrack (baroque music with indigenous American influence) replicates the theme of the movie

I’m surprised How To Train Your Dragon isn’t on the list. John Powell composes some amazing scores including HTTYD, Ice Age, Kung Fu Panda and more. But I think HTTYD definitely deserves to be on the list, atleast for the sake of its scores being heard by other people.

Cinema paradisio (1989) score is by Morricone. (Main theme actually by his wife) How on earth would you not have it in the S category? Im deeply offended. It’s one of the most memorable scores in the last decades.

Pan (2003) has amazing themes. It’s underrated, but listening to it instils every emotion you should feel at the time of the movie especially “Flying.”
“Define Dancing” from Wall-E is amazing as well. Let’s not skip over the fact that “King of Pride Rock” is better than “The Circle of Life” either and that Prince of Egypt is Hans Zimmer’s best work.

Pixar scores beat new Disney scores hands down. Michael Giacchino's The Incredibles and Ratatouille soundtracks are definitely A+ tier.
To be fair, they improved the Avengers soundtrack a lot in Endgame. It became much more complex and satisfying, especially in the last battle scene

Maybe I'm just driven by my childhood memories and feelings but i think Lion King is one of the best works of Hans Zimmer. It is epic, it is catchy, it incorporates african folk vibes quite well, you cannot not love it. I listen to that soundtrack very often even nowadays.

Some soundtracks that I also like are from Unce Upon a Time in the West, Life is Beautiful, Beyond Silence (1996), Everything is Illuminated, Blade Runner. Should you ever do another part of this, the soundtrack for the Matrix, Requiem for a Dream or Amélie are also pretty iconic
Blade Runner is Vangelis, so, add 1492 and Chariots of Fire at the very least 🙂
I know we have diff tastes, but LaLaLand would be S tier for me. The song they played is the theme, and it’s super nice, but the entire soundtrack, w the other songs, are so top tier for me. Especially, when you see how it fits the movie, it gets my nostalgia going. Interstellar I love soooo much as well, and I agree! S tierrrrrr 💜

Personally, my favourite soundtracks come from how to train your dragon, the incredibles, and Kung Fu panda. The story telling of httyd is pretty incredible, especially test drive, see you tomorrow, and forbidden friendship. There are videos out there (Sideways & Charles Cornell) talking about the themes. The incredibles has pretty good jazz music, especially in 'life's incredible again', while Kung Fu panda has a very emotional score.. These are my personal opinions, so please don't come at me
The httyd and some of the kung fu panda soundtracks were both written by John Powell! And I agree they're really great and I definitely recommend them :)
The sountrack for the Incredibles is good too, though I haven't listened to it on its own like the others
@@ahassett37 I know right? I didn't know if it was just a coincidence or not that both httyd and kfp were composed by John, although hanz Zimmer did do some of the work in kfp. I would suggest listening to some of the incredibles soundtracks
I feel like if they had reacted to some of the more orchestral parts of the Shinkai soundtracks, they'd have rated it higher.

I saw all 3 LOTR films in NY for the first time they ever played all 3 movies together with a symphony. Howard Shore was there and it was conducted by Ludwig Wicki and I had the opportunity to meet them both!!! It was incredible!
