    These horror monsters are icons now. Frankenstein is a legend all by himself. Add the Wolfman, Dracula, the Mummy, and my favorite the Creature from the Black Lagoon and it's a epic line-up that even today won't be beat. Boris Karloff ICON. These movies were a big part of my childhood. Watching with my Mom on Saturday night at the frights TV shows. Awesome memories.

  • @Desslar
    @Desslar Před 8 lety +42

    The reason these decades-old characters could still be marketed to kids in 1981 is that there were many independent TV stations at the time, and they subsisted on airing whatever content they could get cheap, which included a lot of very old films. Thus the old Universal monster movies were still getting regular TV airings in 1981 (our local station in Washington DC for example ran a marathon of these films every Halloween), and therefore kids were very familiar with them. Also black and white televisions were still around in considerable numbers in 1981, so the black and white look of the films was not so jarring.
    Today however no kids would be exposed to the original films unless they are Turner Classic Movie junkies or their parents force them to watch. And good luck with the latter when there is recently so much spooky content specifically aimed at kids (Goosebumps, Frankenweenie, Monster House, Paranorman, etc.). A shame perhaps but there you go.

      I don't know what you're talking about with the latter half. My child loves classic horror films. She eats em up.

    • @Desslar
      @Desslar Před 4 lety +1

      @@stevejohnson9305 That's great to hear. But I do think the percentage of kids becoming fans of classic B&W horror films today is surely much lower than it was 40 or even 30 years ago. Just too much newer content competing for their attention.

    • @stevejohnson9305
      @stevejohnson9305 Před 4 lety

      @@Desslar That's certainly true. I just don't think it's down to there being some inherent barrier. If you sit a kid down in front of a classic, 9 out of 10 they'll love it. You have to get em when they're young and open to things though. If you try to do it by 9-10 going into their teens, they won't be as open to accepting or even play-time imaginings.

    OMG. Amazing to see these again! I got Drac, Frank, and the Mummy around 1982ish, so I would have been about three years old. Sturdy little guys, they were still in my box of GI Joe odds and ends when I donated them in the 90s, and still in quite good shape. Loved them so much, although Drac's cape did not survive. :) Never knew about the other three, would have adored them back then! Thanks for sharing this.

X) Cool memories for the #RemcoMonster stuff (especially the minis...and those cardbacks I remember were so beautifully rendered, for a monster, ha). Also brought back some sweet memories with the #AWA wrestlers (had a couple) and the #KarateKid toys (had a handful of those, and completely forgot what the cardbacks looked like)! I was definitely a Karate Kid fan back in the day, and it'd be nice to see an episode on the figures at some point perhaps (their cool points AND definite limitations), as well as that cartoon series that I really liked as a kid but then raised an eyebrow at when I rewatched it on Netflix a while back, haha...some things really seem to "change" a bit! ;) Anyways, LOVED today's episode...as always, thanks SO MUCH for the AMAZING channel! And now, for another strangely relevant Johnny Hates Jazz song...
    "Turn Back the Clock"
    Another day is ended and I still can't sleep
    Remembering my yesterdays, I begin to weep
    If I could have it over live my life again
    I wouldn't change a single day
    I wish that I could turn back the clock
    Bring the wheels of time to a stop
    Back to the days when life was so much better
    Lying here in silence picture in my hand
    Of a boy I still resemble but I no longer understand
    And as the tears run freely, how I realise
    They were the best years of my life
    I wish that I could turn back the clock
    Bring the wheels of time to a stop
    Back to the days when life was much better
    You might say it's just a case of giving up, no
    But without these memories
    Where is the love, so where is the love
    If I could have it over, live my life again
    I wouldn't change a single day
    I wish that I could turn back the clock
    Bring the wheels of time to a stop
    Back to the days when life was so much better
    Why can't I turn back the clock
    Bring the wheels of time to a stop
    Back to the days oh, no, no
    I remember when life was so good
    I'd go back if I could
    Oh, oh I wouldn't change a single day
    Don't let the memories slip away I wouldn't change a single day
    Don't let the memories slip away, hey
