Myself, Alan Shaw, Steve Henson and Ted Zdanowicz machined the double pulleys at Markhams. They were too big for the vertical borer to machine in the bore so we put them on a horizontal borer for that operation. We made 4 pulley wheels plus two spares which I believe were never used. One pulley was bolted to the shaft while the other sat on a bearing on the same shaft. A problem they had was "banging" of the free pulley. Because the two pulleys were so close in diameter, there was very little movement of the free pulley, so when it moved it went with a jerk and bang which transmitted down to the cages. To stop this, Alan Shaw and myself went on site with a routing motor to machine the pulleys to the exact same size and this did indeed stop the banging. This was a new type of pulley with inserts in the pulleys instead of a steel "trod" and reduced rope wear. It also increased the life of the pulleys dramatically. We also put inserts on wood lagged friction winders, These were so successful at Cotgrave colliery, they went from replacing the wood lags every 6 months, to lasting from the time of conversion to when the colliery closed.

Another great video, they should make this a small mining museum, i use a wheelchair so its great to see this sort of thing, the head stocks should rain in place and be done up and a memorial plaque placed at the site for all the miners, its something to be proud of that they are the 3rd tallest in the world, and the worlds a big place, if you knock them down their gone for ever with a lot of mining heritage.

Russ Cusworth yes I did on the first week of the strike getting £2 a day.
We couldn’t understand how men were getting into the mine as they were telling us “yes mate I’m not going in, just let me into the canteen for a drink before I go home” it took us a while to twig that there was a subway from the canteen/baths under the road to the shaft side.

That headgear is ruffle half the size of Hem Heath ( Trentham) shaft was 1062metre deep with 4 cages two to 612m and a ground mounted Koepie winder to 1062m each cage had 4 decks and could carry about 100men per wind

I remember visiting Hem Heath in the 60’s when they claimed to hold a record. Four cages at the bottom of the shaft at the same time. Apparently one broke away and hit the other coming up and tripped the cappell. All Koepie systems had a balance rope attached to the bottom of each cage ( or skip ) so you can imagine the state of the pit bottom when this happened.

Jam Jam I'm late but I think that by digging under the fence and worming you way to an entrance point at night I think you should be able to make it inside undetected but correct me if I'm wrong

Seemingly impossible now, they've rigged up electric fences and CCTV covers the damn place. Best bet would be to dig under the fence, but good luck with that. Since it's so far in the open.

Talk about coal mines they need land mines to keep the chav vandals away from places like this. They are priceless parts of our national heritage and seeing them like this is a disgrace.
