  • This is a tutorial showing how to diagnose and fix several common airbag codes and the code 5-1 air bag thermal fuse. I assume no liability to modifications you make to your car. I hope this helps you fix your flashing lights.

    The speedometer and odometer went out in my ‘96 150. I could smell some burning and realized the #18 fuse blew. I replaced it and the fuse kept blowing out every time the key was turned. After checking the shifter arm I saw your video and took out the airbag module. I didn’t have any airbag lights come on but nonetheless I had the exact same problem with the fuse in the module that burnt up. Thanks for the help!! You saved me hours of trying to diagnose the issue. Now onto trying to fix it...

      Did this fix your problem? I have the exact same problem as you. I had the p0500 replace speed sensor on the rear and the psom behind the speedo

      It "fixed mine" You should also unbolt the airbag. and unplug it. with the battery off!!!!. Then bolt it back on. That module is there to prevent the airbag from firing when a short or ground fault is present. And the airbag would fire without it.

      @@ijsimjustsayin2673 These trucks are so old they have electrical problems. Your instrument cluster. Is a intergral to the ecu. the speed sensor is ran into the cluster and then into your psom. Considr the instrument cluster your mother board. when it becomes old and corroded. The wiring also becomers brittle. You wil lhave weird issues. like your idle changing. and the transmission acting up sporadically. If this happens. Pull over somewhre safe. Turn it off. And wait 5 minutes then restart. And the issue should go away

    my airbag light started blink and the module started beeping. thought i smelt the same thing when my ecu fried. pulled my module and fuse burnt this exact way. thanks for the video!!

      @@madt7462 same actually. found rust/water marks on bottom side of ecu. drip pans and hood cowl has some rust on mine. was told that was the culprits..

      @@crdotson1915 If your truck is as old as mine. your Ecu needs to be repaired or it will fail soon. There are capacitors on it that will leak no matter what. Luckily you dont need a new one. Just a few dollars worth of resistors. Unless your ecu is corroded in and out. Also your wiring is probably very corroded under the shielding like mine. Another important failure point is the instrument cluster. Pretty much all your engine and transmission sensors. Are wired into the instrument cluster then towards the ecu. My airbag module failed first. I had no chime at all from mine. Then my dash lights would go dead every week or so. The only thing working is the highbeam light. The brake light. And the seatbelt indicator. oh and the battery and turn signal. The solid airbag light just hit the dust two days ago. think my first sign my ecu was failing. Was years ago.. I got problems with the the rear gas tank pump. Never turning off. It would build pressure so high it would spray gas out of the front gas cap. I also have seen this on a identical truck i went to check out for a buddy.. Also if you E transsmion. And it shifts poorly randomly. Its probably the ECU. I have had this for years. It can get so bad randomly the car will not know what gear to be in. And will misfire. Leaving it too idle and dry out and restarting would fix it for me. Okay sillt question i cant find my ecu. I heard its on the drivers side fender. But i i have my ignition module right there instead. Is it under the airbox? or under the fuse box? THese trucks are awesom but with age they have all the annoying quirks. Tho it will still get you from a-b. with plenty or torque. I think you should invents in a car cover. I think im going to buy one. I have had problems parking in the wet shade. And the system going fubar until it tried out.

      @@madt7462 yup mine did fail. ate through the board. it was making my truck die everytime i put it in gear. took it to a computer repair place and they had to put in 3 jumper wires. been running good since then. couldnt find the ecu in stock anywhere..

    Good video, I will check out my wiring for damage and corrosion. Did you have a buzzer going off before you fixed it? I do have a buzzer going off. Some said a burned out airbag or seatbelt light could cause this. My bulbs are good.

    So overall do you know the actual cause of what caused the thermal fuse to burn?

    • @Divorceization
      @Divorceization  Před 2 lety

      In my case it was a shorted wire in the front crash sensor harness from a headlight fire. Usually it pops from a short. It will also pop if the airbags deploy
