First Topwater Trout of 2024 and More

The water temperature has risen to the mid 60's over the last several days and that means it is time to break out the topwater baits. For me this is a welcome event in the seasonal cycle of speckled trout fishing.
Many anglers agree that topwater action tops all the other presentations due to the noise and acrobatics that ensue when trout strike on the surface. These same antics also result in frequent missed hookups but that is part of the fun.
Topwater baits are also arguably one of the top methods to elicit strikes from the largest of the resident trout, so when spring comes I will be throwing topwater baits in low light conditions.
Sometimes the strikes stop on the top so I will switch to the old reliable jerk baits and twitch baits. This year the jerk baits have been popular with speckled trout.

Always enjoy your adventurous and instructional videos. I am transitioning as a beginner from live shrimp to lures. Nothing like catching on a lure. I catch and release unless the fish is harmed. Mostly hang out at Bayou Bienvenue. May I ask were you there or fishing Hopdale. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Nice , I’m using a wake bait instead of top water , running it 1-2 ft under stopping it for a sec , every time a trout slams it , when are you going to start tagging them?

Cool results on the wake bait! Tagging is on my list. I just need to make sure I am setup properly before I start.
