1 YEAR TIMELAPSE | DIY Couple Building Dream Home in the Irish Countryside | 250 Year old Farmhouse
Vložit
- čas přidán 2. 06. 2024
- Welcome to our 1 year Timelapse. We have come a long way since selling up and buying our Dream Homestead in the West of Ireland in early 2023.
We wanted to share our progress and take a moment to see what we have achieved and how far we have come, because sometimes as a amateur DIY couple it really doesn't feel like it.
Our story starts sharing the background of us, Clare and Rob, where we came from and what drove us to this point; from when we met in boarding school, travelled the world and started our escape from the rat race journey to our HOME
After years of looking for an old farmhouse or cottage in the Irish Countryside we finally found a beautiful 3 Acre Homestead that we fell in love with. It hadn't been lived in for 15 years and there was a lot of work to do but we couldn't resist and bought it with every last penny we had. In a beautiful home and broke we got a grant of 70k from the Irish Government designed to reclaim derelict homes. This just about covered the building materials but we had to learn all the trades and how to do everything ourselves, while both working full time jobs.
*Sorry about the audio, we bought a new mic for this video but it didnt work out as we hoped.

Could you please turn down the music so it is easier to hear you
Wondering who your directorial style reminds me of and of course, Peter Jackson finally popped into my head! 😆
@@sherrienash5973Will do thank you for letting us know, apologies for the late reply 🙂
@@Cauin450 Haha Peter Jackson, quite the compliment 😂
@@WestCorkWander well you and him do have a lot in common. Fran Marsh is also a bit of a looker.
Ammmaaazzzing! Its incredible what you have achieved in just 1 year & you haven't lost your sense of humour. You could probably have a future in running building workshops for all of those brave individuals resurrecting Ireland's derelict houses. Love the larch against the dry stone walls. Looking forward to following all that you do. 💪👌👏
Wow, thank you!
Ah guys the work you’ve done is absolutely incredible, you’ve given such a new lease of life to that lovely house and land! Loved the pics of ye when you were young! I’m so impressed and inspired by your progress!
Thanks so much Aisling, lots to do but it does feel like lots has been achieved, especially when I look back at this video. Have a lovely Easter Sunday ❤️
@@WestCorkWander you’ve done an incredible amount in 12 months I’m so so impressed!
What an epic year with so much achieved. If you didn’t record it all you would just surely forget much of what you have done during the year, all the little things that all add to the journey. Thanks so very much for sharing and power to you both. You are truely an inspiration.
Absolutely, it's only when you look back at the video, you realize how far you have come 😊
It’s impressive to see how much you’ve accomplished in a year, while still working full time. Truly looking forward to seeing more. Happy Easter ✌️💚 🐣 🐰
Thanks so much! You are our very first member thank you so much, please can you send on your address to me 😘
I want to apologise, for my comment of a few months ago. I mentioned that everything was very chaotic and so on. However, I have now watched your channel from the beginning. From leaving your house in suburban Cork City and then your one year time laps video. I really am in awe of you both, you have incredible stamina and undeniable vision and passion for your Forever Home. Please accept my apologie and thank you for allowing us to join you on your journey .
All good, no worries at all, delighted to have you with us on our journey 😊
Just found your wonderful channel....inspirational! The extended rear roof, the cladding, the make-it-up-as-we-go-along vibe....Love it!
Hi from North Leitrim/Donegal border.
What an amazing journey Clare & Rob! It is truly inspirational and proves what can be achieved by pure passion and sheer determination. I am sure it will encourage others to follow your path. What a wonderful way to bring our old buildings back to life, create fantastic memories with a beautiful home as a result. 😃
Thanks so much for the comment, I hope that we can inspire others to take on projects like this as so much of the work can be done by anyone. 🙂
Your wife's a legend. Wow, I've never seen such a woman prepared to give anything a go
And yourself for doing the hard yards to fulfill your goals
Why thankyou for the compliments. Comments like that are what give us the motivation to keep going ❤️
It isn't possible that I can comment on everything you have done in 12 months, this video really shows how much you two have done, it is remarkable. To think we found you on CZcams, sat at your kitchen table in the dark discussing what you were going to do, to now DIY experts who have basically rebuilt their house in front of our very eyes. Not only have you done all of this but you both had full time jobs so did it at night. 1:30am, Oh my god.
You two are truly amazing and we are so pleased we found your CZcams channel 12 months ago. You are both inspiring and sh*t can you both work hard. Well done both of you for all of the work, well done for catching up with getting the videos out there and well done for starting a second video each week for the growing and planting etc. I know we will learn a lot from you.
Keep on going, you really are amazing and should be so very very proud.
All the best and Happy Easter to all four of you :-)
Thanks Ben and Dawn. I cried when I first watched the video back, yeah it's a bit overwhelming and you know documenting all of this will be amazing to look back at in twenty years time! Thank you so much for the support, we always talk about our friends Dawn and Ben from Leitrim, like you live next door. Happy Easter guys xxx
A huge achievement!!You are both amazing , great team work . Happy Easter and best wishes for the future.
@@WestCorkWander It's funny because we talk about you like that too, like everyone we know should know who you are. Our farmer neighbour knows who you are though, he rates you too 🙂
Thanks @annecanty1227 🥰
Fantastic look back over the year , so looking forward to seeing the inside come together 😊
You and me both! Thank you for joining us on the journey 🙂
This video spurred us on this morning! Really inspiring and hats off for how you just got stuck in even when you have no experience. I also loved to hear your back story. Thanks for sharing & getting us off our bottoms this morning when we felt so overwhelmed today. 👍
Ahh great to hear! We find the mornings difficult but then we know that the day will be longer if we dilly dally 😂. We set a goal for the day with a stretch goal, however keep it realistic, Rob can really stretch this sometimes 🙄 Then you know when you get there the rest of the evening is yours. We still white board the week as it can be too easy to get carried away from the most priority work. Anyway, you'll be fine, serious work already achieved 💪💪
Love that curved wall. House looks amazing can’t wait to see more .
Thank you so much for following our journey 😊
Lads, I'm 68 and over the last many years, my husband and myself have done numerous DIY, but nothing like you guys have done! Amazing, you should be so proud of yourselves, literally building your home yourselves. I'm so impressed! Is there nothing you can't do! Very entertaining and educational video and a wonderful sense of humour throughout it all. Loved it!
Thanks Mary, I think anybody can do it if they put their mind to it. To be honest most of it is just hard labour and once you get through that with a general plan (Rob is excellent at the planning and prioritizing), it really isn't too bad. I guess we know how to work together, when to keep your thoughts to yourself and when to push and motivate 🤣 Thank you for watching 😊
I just found your video. You two are unbelievably blessed to have each other. Your Vlog doesn’t boar because of the the similarities and I find it quite entertaining please keep up the great content..
Thank you so much! Means a lot to us ♥️
Wow, your motivation and work eithic is amazing, and much to be admired 💪👍😁

Awesome! Thanks Mike. We have been collecting ideas of what we wanted to do with our house, from heating to filling a bath tub from the ceiling! Hi Robin & Claire,
Just caught your time lapse video.
Oh boy !
Firstly I would like to start with saying how Proud of you I am.
I don't think anyone could really Appreciate the level of work which goes into resurrecting an old building. And the Magnitude on different stages it entails.
Keep up the good work guys. The end result will be breathtaking. And it's all your own fare hands which made this happen.

Thankyou, glad you enjoyed it x
You two have an amazing work ethic! No way I could do all of that. I like that you keep a positive mindset and add some fun into your videos. Some I see are so bland and boring but you two add some lightness. I also loved the beginning part where you gave a bit of history…helps keep the channel down to earth and helps to make connections . I wish you every success going forward!
Ahh thank you so much for joining our journey ☺️
Now that was an EPIC catch up video. It's amazing what yis have achieved already!
I had a good chuckle over the 'Hot Pizza Date-Night' and Clare's face when you said you were "reporting for booty!" lol!
Time has really flown by.
It was lovely to learn a bit more about you both as couple. Seeing it the teamwork shown now really makes sense.
Thank you.
We weren't sure whether or not to include our history or if anyone would comment or want to know about our personal background, so thank you for the comment! Rob thrilled, yellow pants comments forgotten 😂
What an amazing job you are doing, both of you work so hard
I am sure you must be so proud of yourselfs X Pippa

Looks amazing, well done both of you. Love the larch cladding .
Us too! Thank you so much 😊
I see Big Red, and the Snowman in there! Awesome work guys!
Haha, sure big red would feel lost without snowman! Those where the days! I almost put in the pic of us talking to the cops before I parked on top of a big fine 🤣🤣 great to hear from you, hope your all settling into Irish life!
Amazing!

Wow! I've just come across this video and subscribed straight away so I can continue to follow your progress. After reading the comments, I realise that you both have full time jobs as well. So now I'm doubly impressed. Well done on the work so far and good luck for the work in the future
Yes I look back at that and think how on earth did we do it. The summer was great because of the long evening light, however the last few months were tough with it dark before we finished or day jobs🙈

Wow what a journey guys! Good to see it all again, well done with the video! Lovely sense of humour too all the way through. What a team, you should be mighty proud. Let the journey continue! Kxx
Thanks for watching Kate. We were worried regulars like yourself might find it boring, so tried to keep it as engaging as possible. Editing is not my thing, thankfully Rob is pretty good at it, otherwise we may have killed each other by now!
@@WestCorkWanderOh bless Hehehe! Not at all boring - it was great! Kxx

You guys did a fantastic job. I saw a little bit of myself in some of the work that you’re doing.
Glad you enjoyed it! Great to hear you saw yourself 🥰
Looking forward to watching all that you accomplish and seeing how the people of Ireland do things. Mighty cold there. Here in U.S., Wisconsin it dips below freezing once in a great while. I am happy about that. Love the looks of the larch siding.

Loved watching your first year's achievements! Now feeling more motivated to get our place done! I think we have that same orangey pink paint too - must have been a glut of it in the area!! 😂
Oh my are you nearby? Yes we seemed to have a lot of pink in the house and pink wallpaper, clearly it was very in at the time 😂
@@WestCorkWanderYes - on Kerry and Cork roads, with a fair wind and no tractors, ours is about 2 hours away in Brosna...😅 Life doesn't allow for us to be there working on it all the time, sadly, but when we are it's the same roughing it lifestyle! I recently learned how to use the local supermarket washing machines 😆
@@maxiedee A labour of love so 😂, and I'm sure a beautiful home when you finished x
Congratulations.Great video.
Thanks Anne 😊
Great job you guys!!!
I was wondering why you didn’t put sheathing on the rafters before putting the tyvek vapour barrier on? Maybe it’s different in your area??
Everything looks fantastic though. You should be very pleased with yourselves.
The tyvec manufacturer suggests for corrugation that it is done this way, so we went with this. Thanks for watching 😊
Hi. Brillaint to watch the time lapse. Brings all the episodes back. Could I ask, as it is a self build, are you able to claim your labour cost or only material cost?
Good luck on the rest of the project.
Unfortunately not. But yes we will claim back our material costs, within reason as there are allocated amounts for each area of the spend.
Wow😮

Thanks for wandering with us through our journey 😊 great to have you x
New subscriber, love the journey. Could you maybe get rid of the music or turn it down, would rather hear you voices. The pictures are enough you don’t need the lift music!! Cant wait to see the rest of the build.

Hi Helen, we have noted this and will try to improve. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment 🙂
Did you have to get planning permission. Looks a great job you've both worked so hard best of luck to you both
Hi Nick, we have an episode on the house plans where all is explained. The house is pre 1963 and we did not extend the footprint from previous, so thankfully we did not need to. Thank you for watching 😊
@@WestCorkWander HI myself and my wife renovated our farm and old house in Galway 20 yrs ago so I know how tough and innovative you both are.
Well done team, amazing what you have achieved in a year. Boring stuff now, did you have to get planning permission or building regs to do what you have done?
Hi Richard, we have an episode on the house plans where all is explained. The house is pre 1963 and we did not extend the footprint from previous, so thankfully they did not apply.
Really enjoyed the video. Very impressive what you have accomplished. May I ask how you disposed of the asbestos roof slates? I also have same on an old cottage I am restoring and would like to remove them.
Depending on where you live there are always one or two companies who will pick it up. Google "asbestos removal" and your town and they will tell you exactly how they work, everyone is different but most places will be cheaper if you remove from roof yourself and double bag them ready for collection. Some companies will want them in bags others will want in a specially lined skip 👍
@@WestCorkWander Thank you for your reply
hi there! i just stumble across your channel and i have seen some videos and i think it is nice quality.
i am following a channel that is called "simple life reclaimed" and your channel is similare to that one, the main thing that sets you and them apart is that they build their family compound and you are renovating your family compound.
sure it took awhile before i knew what you were doing and i dunno yet how big the plot is that you have but it will come in time, and i do hope you have the roof on the kitchen in a angle becasue otherwise you will have snow/ rain/ and other debris just sitting on the roof and that is not good at all.
but i pressed the subscribe button so i can follow along on this journey.
hope you are doing well anyway :)
Hello and welcome 🤗 I do not know this channel that you mentioned, but always nice to see others , so I will check it out.
Yes we do have a angle on both the kitchen and bedroom rooves, you are correct, that is very important.
Thank you so much for subscribing and indeed taking the time to comment. 😊
i dident want to advertise SLR channel becasue this is your channel but i mention that channel because i think you have alot off similare things, another thing i was worried about that SLR have struggle whit also is the condension issue on the roof, basically heat rises up and when it is cold then the isolation becomes wet becasue cold and hot meets were the isolation is (dunno if you understand what i mean?)@@WestCorkWander
@@MrMooneclips It is really good to mention other channels we have a couple here in Ireland we know and one advertises the other so to speak, so it is a really good thing and can help collaboration between channels.
Our corrugation has or is supposed to have an anti condensation film, we haven't experienced any problems yet thankfully. I must take a look at the channel you mentioned 👍
i see, i was only worried becasue i have seen the condensation issue arise on other channel even when they planned alot becasue they dident plan in the condensation, SLR is a american couple so they are from "across the water" so to speak but i think they have good content, anyhow what you do whit my information is up to you but i was only asking things i was wondering about, anyways keep up the good work :) @@WestCorkWander
btw beside your channel then i found another irish channel that does renovation and that channel is called "The Irish Homestead" i have only watched 2 episodes of it but i think they are doing good episodes also and they are not "across the pond" so that is maybe something you want to check out if you are looking for other diy renovation channels.:)@@WestCorkWander
Ssalam alikom 🎉❤
Thank you for watching 😊
Why didn’t you do a shed roof off the house for the kitchen. Instead of a flat roof.
Both the kitchen and bedroom rooves are at a slight angle so not exactly flat. We were not going to make either into a two storey so it seemed logical to do it this way and we like the look. It also makes for an easy roof for maintenance and easy access to the main farmhouse roof. Thank you for watching 😊
Do your children work with you off camera to help ?
They do. Ciara makes most of our dinners and Ash is in charge of firewood. They both walk the dog and feed the animals.

Watch our video on the roof removal, we researched this hugely before taking it on. Thank you for commenting 🙂
Lovely looking farmhouse but editing is erratic. Really don't like the wooden cladding. Looks out of place for an old Irish farmhouse.
Thanks, a year ago we had no editing experience, now we have slightly more experience, the editing is clearly different across this video as we didn't use raw files, we actually used the edited CZcams videos. Well spotted!
Agree that the cladding is unusual, we had several options at design stage, we like it aesthetically, but chose cladding for several reasons from cost, ease of use and eco reasons..
Superb footage great vlog
