  • In this week's mouthpiece comparison we put the trusty Bach 4G up against the Denis Wick 4ABL by playing a little Barat Andante et Allegro. Which one do you prefer? Comment below!

    Thanks for the video. The best way to hear and compare two mpcs would be with short phrases, playing the same. In other words, after 3 bars you should have shown the same phrase with the DW .. easy and faster for us to hear back and forth on the low, medium, and high registers. Though to me you sounded better on Bach.

    Thanks for the very effective comparison. To me both mouthpieces are too dark for tenor trombone, but you are getting good sound.

    La boquilla Denis wick 4bs es para trombón de tudel chico o tudel ancho ... En otras palabras para trombón de estudiante campana pequeña o trombón de campana ancha transpositor

    Hi, what do you think about the Denis Wick's booster for classic mouthpieces? Did you ever tried it? Does it really changes the sound that it sounds a little bit deeper and "more dark"? I know it will never be the same with heritage or heavytop but is it even worth to pay attention?

    • @SchmittMusicTromboneShop
      @SchmittMusicTromboneShop  Před 5 lety +1

      I haven’t played specifically on the Denis Wick boosters but I have experience with similar weight enhancers. Any time mass is added to a mouthpiece I find it does add weight and projection to the sound and darken the timbre; on the flip side more mass can make response and articulation slower. The other problem I have encountered is that some mouthpiece designs don’t respond well to the added weight and you aren’t guaranteed to get the benefits you were hoping for. I think they are absolutely worth a try if you were interested but don’t expect miracles!

      I would recommend either the Heavytop or Classic; I find the Heritage line to have good sound and stability but flexibility and response in technical situations tends to lack. For me I like the core and slotting in the Heavytops but others find the heavier blank harder to get a clean and fast response. Hope this helps!

    Would you recomend the Dennis Wick Heritage or Classic (1AL or 0AL) for a Bass trombone?

    • @SchmittMusicTromboneShop
      @SchmittMusicTromboneShop  Před 5 lety +2

      I lean towards the Classic vs. the Heritage, mostly because of the rim shape on the Heritage, which is quite flat. For some people a flat rim gives a lot of stability to their sound; I do find this to be true but at the same time I find flexibility suffers greatly. The Classic still has a flatter rim then most and I think is a bit more versatile...

    Can the 4ABL haritage be used on bass trombone.

    • @SchmittMusicTromboneShop
      @SchmittMusicTromboneShop  Před 3 lety

      It certainly can! With that said often I find that the mouthpiece needs to match not only the player but the instrument; given the air column size and speed needed for the general bass trombone design many players might find a mouthpiece like the 4ABL to be a bit on the small side but depending on ones approach it could well be a fit...

    At 66 my 4G makes me work A LOT. I often fall back to my trusty Schilke 51D. Is the Wick 4ABL as demanding as the 4G? (I'm sure you're thinking 4G? demanding? Call me when you're 66 - but don't wait for me to answer - I will undoubtedly have shoved off).

    • @noahhinton2657
      @noahhinton2657 Před 5 lety +1

      is the shilke good for high register?

    • @SchmittMusicTromboneShop
      @SchmittMusicTromboneShop  Před 5 lety +3

      It depends on a number of factors but the Schilke 51D wouldn’t be my first choice for a mouthpiece to support the upper register. The 51D has a deeper cup, which can provide depth and warmth to the sound but can also make upper range response more difficult; combined with a more open throat and backbite, which Schilke is known for, this makes the 51D a popular euphonium choice but not my biggest recommendation on trombone...

    • @SchmittMusicTromboneShop

      I would love to! The big trick is getting our hands on some of the Heritage models; we haven't been stocking many lately as they haven't gotten a lot of traction in our area. Let me work with Denis Wick and we'll see what we come up with :)

    What do the 3G, 4G, and so on mean? Is that just apart of the name of the mouthpiece?

    • @zane7150
      @zane7150 Před 4 lety +1

      Steven123lucky I believe the smaller the number the larger the mouthpiece. 3Gs are larger than 4Gs for example
