  • As a part of the development of their Artisan line a number of years ago Bach introduced the Artisan mouthpieces; these mouthpieces incorporate features of the classic New York-era Bach mouthpieces with more recent innovations to create a unique combination of sound, feel and response! I noticed some real differences between the 5G and 5GL options, especially in comparison with my own standard Bach mouthpiece; take a listen and let me know what you think!

I thought that the Artisan 5G was a far better mouthpiece than the other two. I heard on the video better dynamic and pitch control, better articulations, better phrasing, and, in general, just plain old better control of the sound. If I had not seen you play the three mouthpieces, I would have sworn someone else was playing the standard 5G. I thought it was the weakest mouthpiece here on the video. I felt you fought the Artisan 5GL a bit, but with a smaller horn that might go away. You are a great player. If I were selling you a mouthpiece, I would next ask which felt better. To me here, though, the Artisan5G gave you a much better sound and for me as the audience, I preferred the playing of the Artisan 5G more than the other two. Much more in fact. I would like to have heard the three on your main trombone. I would bet that is where the differences would REALLY come out. Great video. I wish more channels did this kind of comparison. Enjoy. And Thank you.

I use it on my daily basis. The rim is more comfortable for me than standard Bach 5G rim. Great mouthpiece 👍

I can't tell any difference, but I like listening to him play.

Great review, thanks! Have you ever tried any Griego Ian Bousfield? I would love to hear you opinion on those!

Really enjoyed hearing this video. Just spent a morning at Phil Parker's (London) trying a whole load of different mouthpieces in the 5G size (Wick, Griego-Bousfield, Warburton and Schilke - and my standard 5GB) and for me the Bach Artisan 5G stood out as the best for me. Better sound and also control in the upper register. I did also quite like the Griego-Bousfield but felt the Artisan 5G had a better overall sound.

Thanks for sharing! I haven’t had the opportunity to visit Phil Parker’s but I have heard great things! I am curious what your experience was like there…

@@SchmittMusicTromboneShop Phil Parker's has probably the best selection of brass instruments and mouthpieces in the UK. Knowledgeable and very helpful staff with two booths to try out the instruments. I always recommend my pupils to go there - unless they are French Horn players then it's Paxman's.

Your sound is much more controlled and balanced on the 5G. I may have to investigate that mouthpiece myself.

I recently changed from a 4G to a 5G to try to make the upper register a little easier and it's been a success overall. Definitely easier upstairs and no real loss of sound quality. However I do find the 5G a little less comfortable. The rim seems a little sharper somehow.. can you tell me did you find any disadvantages at all in playing the Artisan 5G over the standard 5G?
And how about the upper register? Any differences between the two up there?
And finally I believe you are normally a standard 5G player? - would you consider switching to the Artisan 5G and if not why?
Thanks for your thoughts in advance 👍

He looks good and he sounds great! Having watched a bunch of old videos on this channel over the last few weeks, Keith has clearly been putting a lot of work into his playing.
