    People with the money should definitely buy a new bike, (and put their existing bikes on the market:)

  • @scherzo0o
    @scherzo0o Před 2 měsíci +31

    Sorry, but the only reason to update from this bike would be the internal routing of the cables. And that's a lame reason.
    A two-years old bike being replaced? Ever - never, I'd skip at least a generation.
    It's true, if you want to maximize the value of selling it, the sooner you sell it the better. But I'm skeptic that you'd get a significant amount of extra-money if you sell it today or in two years from now on, to buy the next generation.

      I still ride my rim break S-Works SL6 which I got for a great price. The SL8 is the same bike with internal cables and disc breaks that I don‘t want. Why would i throw money out the window?

      I have just sold the 2019 version which I loved…. but the cable routing was a mess if you aren’t running di2. I don’t know why it took until now before they finally integrated the cables!

      @scherzo0o Yeah, it is a silly reason if that's the only reason. The ninth-generation is the best one for me, I even almost bought the rim brake version back in late 2020.

      Same. Mine is 12 years old this year. If I were a more serious rider obsessed with speed, then the advances in aero and tyre width etc. might be a reason, but my bike is practical, comfy, strong and fast enough

      I only switched framesets in May 2022 (my first time ever and my first major upgrade). During that time, my previous frameset was 13 or 14 years old. The reason I switched was for increased tire clearance on wider wheels, the previous frameset can't run anything wider than 25 mm tires on wheels with a 15 mm internal rim width. I once tried fitting the same tire onto a wider wheel and tire clearance is less than 4 mm.

    Just purchased a 2023 tcr advanced pro disc frameset for $1600, bars and stem for $400 and already had dura ace 9170 groupset, 9270 calipers, and elite drive 50D's on my previous emonda sl6. Sold my emonda frameset for $1100 and all my tubeless things so the switch only cost me roughly $750. Riding the best bike I've ever had now. Love my 2023 TCR. The exposed cables in the front were great to dial in fit as a home mech. The bike is aero enough, comfy, light and fast. The cables also give off a sense of nostalgia without looking too dated. I adore this bike. The new one... Not so much.

    I'm a bit lost on the message of this video.. You could have gone into the what the resell value of this current bike is. The outlay of an upgrade is a major consideration for us mortals. As for your question, off course you should upgrade. You are a professional so if anyone, you should & I'm sure you'll get a healthy discount.

    I have 2021 pro one, mechanical and rim brake. It really is a good ride. Updated this winter with titanium CAdex skewers and an CAdex amp saddle and it’s pretty much 7kg. Other than bar tape (super caz) and conti gp 5000s that’s it. I don’t think I’d gain much by upgrading to a new one but happy to hear your view David 😊

    My bike is a 10 year old aluminum frame carbon fork rim brake 10 speed Tiagra setup. I started looking for a new bike this year, all carbon, more aero and electronic groupset. The cost is now absolutely absurd.... I just upgraded my entire drive train, wheels, tires and brakes for a quarter of the cost of a new bike. Now my 10 year old bike is a full pound lighter than the 5k dollar carbon bike I was looking at. Sure it isn't aero and lacks electronic shifting and disc brakes, but what does that really gain me as a non racer. It might have cut some time off my 40k time, but if I improve my FTP and loose a few pounds I will be just fine. I'm going to wait for the bike market to crash which is imminent. The same thing happened in the guitar market. Prices soared and then people stopped buying and inventory started sitting, now prices are discounted. I will revisit next year, but for now I'm completely happy with my upgrades and could very well be for the next few years.

    If you had the exact same set up w/wheels & group on both models, I have a lot of doubt you'd be feeling much of any difference in speed, ride quality etc.

  • @fabianmolyneux2308
    @fabianmolyneux2308 Před 2 měsíci +3

    Personally, I prefer to hold on to my bikes and pimp them up. Consequently, the frame being the central component is all important to me, as you can scale up on the groupset, the wheels, tyres, saddle, bottom bracket stem and handle bars.
    For instance with the older model TCR the option to internally route the brake cables can be undertaken by acquiring a new fork at around $400 AUD
    I think it's a pity that the big brands don't retail their higher-end frames with lower spec componentry, which would better open the way for those of us who don' t have the big bucks to go all out in one hit on a top end bike buy, but could do so on a stepped out scale up as finances allow.
    Great Vid

    The TCR is the race bike for everybody. Price is good, for a race bike with proper race geometry but is not to chunky on the scales. Somewhere in the middle between the Sl7 and the Aethos but much cheaper. The new version of the TCR did not spark any FOMO. My previous Advance Pro Disc 1 is still fine for me.

    As someone who has recently upgraded a bike, my question was is the perceived improvement worth the price of the new bike less the selling price of the old bike. In my case, I worked this out to be around £1K which was worth it.
    What I didn’t consider is the state of the second hand market. It is very much a buyers market which means I haven’t been able to sell my older bike as of yet.
    In the case of the TCR, I can’t see there being much of a difference between like for like models, so unless you get a “special” influencer rate, I would keep the older version.

    • @heavymetal9099
      @heavymetal9099 Před 2 měsíci +3

      For selling? Because someone is always buying a bike. There's always someone upgrading a 10 year old bike, or moving up from an entry level to a high end bike.
      Your typical rider absolutely does NOT need to be upgrading their bike often though. If they aren't competing, they probably should keep a bike about as long as a car, just doing maintenance and replacing components as they wear, only replacing a bike when the industry moves on enough that the components they need are hard/expensive to find.

    I am getting the new TCR and think there are several aspects of my situation that may be typical of people eyeing the new TCR:
    1. I am upgrading from an older, very different bike (2013 Defy) and am looking for something "different" rather than strictly "better" than my current bike
    2. I live for climbing, and my top priority in a new bike is what feels most lively going up a hill
    3. I don't race and don't particularly care about getting every last watt of aero on the flats
    4. I love the looks of a modern spin on classic elegance (internal cables on the TCR frame is a big aesthetic plus in my books)
    I don't think the new model is a big difference from the old one, but as someone who's looking to get a new bike for the next decade anyway, I'd definitely rather have the new changes than not.

    got an old BMC Impec of 10 years old…truth be told, i havent met a bike that caught my attention as much as my current rim brake bike…so, I could probably gain a lot with a new bike, but I still think my Impec is the best looking bike…..

    I had the naked carbon sl 2022 model which was very stiff to uncomfortable stiff and had a lot of quality issues and was recalled by giant. Now if the new is even stiffer will make it dangerous and not my cup of tea.

    If I'm in the market for a new bike, I'd go for the Defy. The difference of Defy and TCR in terms of weight is so minimal and also I'd prefer the wider tire clearance.

      Only the SL uses it, the Pro and base TCR Advanced still use a regular seatpost interface.

    Most cyclists would love your current TCR. Seems to me that Bicycle tech is reaching a pinnacle of design. Improvements are only really noticed by Pros at the high end. Not everyone wants a super stiff frame and when manufacturers says the bike saves 10 watts at 30 mph this means nothing to real world cyclists.

    I have literally the same bike. I hear you on that dumb fork grommet. There has got to be a better way to do it.

    • @yonglingng5640
      @yonglingng5640 Před 2 měsíci

      Some of my ex-colleagues didn't install this grommet when they unbox one to build. They probably forgot or didn't realise there's supposed to be one.
      But yes, I'd prefer it if the tolerances were a little tighter. The way the front brake hose was pushing it didn't allow the grommet's flange to sit completely flush on the fork frown.

    New bike fever is so easy to catch! But I really see nothing wrong with your current 2 year old bike. Any differences between it and a new bike have to be very small. It would be an expensive marginal cost to purchase a new bike for it. For me, it might be worth an upgrade when obvious meaningful generational changes have occurred, say maybe at least 5 to 6 years (or longer in some cases). And even then, certain components, such as wheels, can be upgraded to extend the useful life of an old bike. However, this likely wouldn't apply to competitive professional racers.

    It’s a first world problem but the idea is that you upgrade so I don’t have to 😂. Nice to read about new tech etc but in the real world you stick with what you have ❤.
    BTW can I have your old bike please 🙏.
    Really enjoyable vlog thanks.

    I personally wouldn't bother i have a 2023 TCR pro with a few SRAM red upgrades and the giant aero cockpit.
    Internal cable routing doesn't bother me and a 2 watt saving in miniscule for the cost to change.

    It depends on your ability to max out the residual value of the existing bike, negotiate a good deal on the new bike, and generate additional income from new content on the new bike. If you can do all three, then why not? 🙂

    Its always time to buy a new bike - any particular reason you're sticking with Giant? Ive recently sold my 2020 Propel advanced 0, replaced with a 2021 S-Works Tarmac SL7 i bought for an unavoidable bargain - i will not shutup about how good this bike is, and how much better it is than the one i traded ....

    Why are we viewing road bikes like semi disposable tech that is obsolete by design after 12-18 months? A modern performance road bike is good for years and years without considering the need to upgrade. I have a 5 year old Focus Izelco, I do not need to buy anything else... not for a long time
